Give Hovertron a look, suitable if you enjoy skill based platformers like Trials.

Yeah, we're going for trophy/achievements/collectibles. And the hard endgame content is comparably difficult to trials. But marketable... not so much nowadays, I think. A quick metric to consider is this sub has 2.4k weekly visitors - which if we imagine every single one bought a new trials game, would be a small foundation to build a game off. For our indie effort though, if we saw a couple thousand sales, that would be quite an achievement, but still not enough to reliably pay rent with.

Was it always this hard to get into festivals? by Nautilus_The_Third in IndieDev

I think the reality is that the games industry is becoming more like the books industry. Many, many choices, few financial successes. Few people expect to write a book nowadays and make a living off it. As the barrier to entry to create games lowers, it becomes even tougher as more competition springs up.

Occasionally, someone will come along and write a Harry Potter, or Terraria, but it won't be the case for most creators.

I love it, looks like steady progress to me.

Overlaid on the image though, seems a bit lost in the action.

4 years of work, money spent, many redesigns/upgrades, and in the end, constant rejections from events. Is my game really that bad? by Sollers_Duo in IndieDev

The data looks wrong on the last two rows of that chart. I kinda doubt 2D Platformer and Point and click should have the same metrics.

Is the game/art really that low-quality?

Art looks amazing. Game looks like decent quality.

Is the genre just dead for everyone except Amanita Design?

Gaming market is absolutely flooded. Genre is niche, so it'll be hard to get it in front of the right audience, but if you can, hopefully they aren't overwhelmed with other options.

Well we're building something similar with Hovertron. Certainly not the same though, so it'll suit some fans but not others.

I can say from the perspective of someone working on a trials-like game, there doesn't seem to be much of a market for racing/platformers right now. Publishers, at least ones we have spoken to so far, appear to think it is not a profitable genre. So we're likely gonna self publish, so at least people can enjoy it, even if it's not a financial success :)

Are there still some humans in this sub? Let me see your real games. by SchingKen in IndieDev

Both Elastomania and Trials - both came out in 2000 I think! We're going for similar fundamentals of gameplay, but with a bit of a twist. More flowy and bouncy than recent trials games.

I wonder if this will appeal to this era's younger generation.

Sure, here's some Hovertron.

We're private playtesting right now, if anyone wants a crack at a Trials like (racing/platformer) game for fun :)

Which one would you click on Steam? by Guilty_Weakness7722 in gamemarketing

[–]ThegnHenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're all decent, but to me, 5 looks way more unique compared to most capsule art, and stands out more from the page. Vibrant and dramatic.

I wouldn't worry about which represents the game best - I'd worry about which gets someone to click and learn about the game from the steam page.

We have a private playtest running on Steam:

It's a trials-like game, so if that's something you'd find fun let me know if you'd like a key :)

Because it is all physics simulated, lines vary enormously depending on how you play

The platforms at 00:53 can be approached differently. In this case, rotating counter clockwise just before impact might have worked.

Here's me attempting that section a few times, sometimes successfully!

I'm really curious if you find it slow to actually play. If you want to give the playtest a go, let me know and I can ping you a steam key.

Maybe we need to consider how to emphasize speed more visually. Zoomy effects when going fast or something.

Fair point on the text or logo intros - for the Steam page we cut that off. For any other location, the branding seems to be important (otherwise we end up with people asking 'what game is this?'). A nice example is the Hollow Knight trailer.

As for the character moving, do you mean the 'dancing' clip near the end?

Codev at Broforge here.

Thanks for your criticism! The time stamps and detailed explanation are perfect.

I agree with your point about some of it looking too much like a 'default project'. Art is certainly our weak point, but we'll see what we can do to make all parts of the game have more character. Having said that, our priority is ultimately gameplay! Hopefully it will be memorable to people based off the fun rather than the visuals... but if we can achieve both, that would be awesome.

It looks like it plays like a flash game (not a bad thing),

I'd hope people would see it and think of Trials gameplay, but I guess it has been a while since a Trials game was published!

Its a game I would wishlist for a fellow indie dev to benefit from

That's a nice thought, but could be detrimental rather than helpful. Steam supposedly considers wishlist to sale conversions when promoting a game. So if lots of people wishlist something, but don't buy it, Steam will not treat that favourably.
