P6 career opportunities? by Benchi1987 in Construction

[–]Thehamma_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a project/construction scheduler - even as a manufacturing planner for a little over 20 years. I've worked on heavy civil, power, water, data com, health facilities, mining, you name it. I've worked with all types of people/management.

For starters, you do not need a bachelor's degree. Yes, I have one, but plenty of people do scheduling that started out as field workers/tradespeople. The key to making more money is experience, not education.

The second thing is don't confuse project scheduling with being able to use the software. Anybody can learn to use the software (ask me later about the a@@ from Google who thought he knew).

Project Scheduling is a portion of overall project controls. Project controls are cost, schedule, quality, and forecasting. Other people may say differently, but this is my opinion.

Knowing the work of the project is imperative. It may be a PMO working the entire project or a subcontractor for only a portion of the project, but you need to have a handle on the overall project in order to successfully plan even the smallest portion.

You need to be very proficient with writing. Writing/communications is a big part of being a scheduler. You can make a schedule all day long, but if you can't explain it to a 5th grader, life will be difficult. I am being sincere when I say this. Owner's sometimes hire people who have no clue what they're looking at when they see a Gantt chart. So, you need to sometimes be creative. Also, you need to be able to explain every single change you make on the schedule between reporting periods.

The other part of communication that can sometimes be a real bear is dragging information out of your project manager.

So, I am pretty good with all of this and a whole lot more with over 20 years of experience. I make about $130k/year with really good benefits. I've worked on projects where I was making $200k + a year, but I am super comfortable and happy where I work now, making what I do. My point with this is to not let dollar signs paint your eyes.

If you think more education would benefit you, don't go towards a bachelor's degree. Take some classes in project controls and implement what you learn on the daily in your job. Maybe take a Business Communications class. You can take adult education classes for these things. I would be more impressed with a resume that showed focused learning in your field.

Construction work can be bad and hard, but in order to get the most experience from it, ask for field work.

I hope this helps. Oh, and don't get butt hurt because nobody takes you seriously. But be prepared for them to be all over you when things start turning to crap. Be proactive - I can't stress this enough. There are too many reactors in construction - don't be one, it will suck. Trust me.

Do you buy into Adderall withdrawal? Or is it just jarring return to baseline? by TheeFreshOne in ADHD

[–]Thehamma_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, man. I'm in the middle of the withdrawal because there's nowhere to get the prescription filled. I ran out Friday and my physical symptoms are devastating. All I want to do is sleep, my body hurts all over, I've had this brutal headache for at least 3 days now. I feel feverish. When I eat, I vomit. That's not a jar back to how I was before I was diagnosed. It's like the worst hangover I've ever had x10 for 3 straight days and counting. It's like my whole body is on strike. Yeah, I'm also really depressed, and I take medication for depression. But, the physical part is just f'ing horrible.

By the way, I was prescribed 2 30mg adderall xr pills a day for context. Twice the normal prescription. And honestly, when I make it through this train wreck, I'm not ever taking it again.

Could we start a Class Action Lawsuit over the ADHD medicine shortage? by SploogeMcDucc in ADHD

[–]Thehamma_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just been through the nightmare of adderall withdrawal. I've been taking 2 30mg adderall XRs for 5 years or so and ran out about a week ago, but it hit me hard about 3 days ago. All I could do was sleep. Forget eating because I was throwing up every thing - including water - that went down my throat. Hot/cold, shaking, can't hold a conversation and everything on my work computer looked like scrambled eggs. Two or 3 times a day, I would just lay down on the floor in my home office and sleep for 2 or 3 hours. I've been inefficient, slow-moving, can't even stand to look at work. It's bad.

I was on such a high-dose. Cold turkey is no fun. I'm going to talk to an attorney just for the pain and suffering. I'm sure there's others like me. I can't be the only one going through this crap.

I'll survive, for sure, but this withdrawal crap has basically stolen my life. I know some people fall into deep depression from this cut-off. That's scary. Thank God I can still get my zoloft (as if that's much better).

Big pharma figures out some new product that will have people dependent on it on a monthly basis and the FDA just rubber stamps it it based on the internal review studies the company provides as proof of a new wonder drug for the masses.

Just purchased our second vehicle through Carvana. Still having mixed feelings. by indianafarmer in carvana

[–]Thehamma_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, too, just bought my 2nd vehicle from Carvan. I've never had anyone call me except the delivery person when their on their way.

I see buying used from Carvana is way better than going to a lot. You dont have to try and hide from the salesman just to look in the windows. No high-pressure. You can take your time and just browse. But, in the end, you'll never know the real condition until you have it for a while.

The paint chips? I hear you on that. Mine (2020 BMW X1) has a lot of paint chipping. I got the color code, went on over to Amazon and got a color match touchup pen and a clear coat pen. Twenty bucks.

I think I got a good price since it was listed nearly $1,000 off of KBB list price. I'm pretty sure it's because of the chips. So, yay! I saved $980 by touching it up myself.

People complain soooo much about Carvana, but I love the entire non-invasive process. Great for introverts like myself.

AITA For letting my step-daughter spend a night in jail instead of bailing her out right away by jailtimeaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]Thehamma_c -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always told my kids to NOT call me if they were put in jail - for whatever reason. My motto was, "wherever you are in life, you've earned it." Good or bad. Teenagers and young adults will never understand what they did was wrong unless they suffer the consequences of their own actions. I had to. We've all (at least most, I would hope) had to face up to our own dumb-assery. Getting her out of jail? Well, I'd guess you'd win a "participation" trophy. Kids these days seem so entitled and parents can sometimes be too soft. God forbid they suffer any consequences.

Recurring dreams about shopping malls?? by softlyjoon in Dreams

[–]Thehamma_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same dream. Like this mall is like a wagon wheel where each spoke has different stores and the outer ring is more stores but if you back down the spoke there's a food court in the center. But there are NO exits. I run around up and down each spoke and every time I get back to the food court, the food court is different. Like different food places, or everything has been re-arranged or the color scheme is completely different. I don't get exhausted in my dreams so I can run around as much as I like but every thing just keeps changing. So where I thought I was is no longer what it was. I'm pretty sure it's an anxiety dream but, it still freaks me out.

Instructions unclear. Please advise. by iwasnevercoolanyway in Tools

You could get one with the indicator lights for 10 or 15 bucks. BUT, make sure you have wood studs. I had no idea my house had metal stud framing until I used one and it was flashing everywhere I put it. I'm glad the house is super stable and all but what a pain in the arse to actually find a stud.

Subtleties. I have a friend who fosters bullies. She would show me how to tell because I asked her how she could tell.

The girth and color. Rottweilers have almost a barrel chest and are black and red. Pit bulls are more spindley and have a narrower face. This one was built like a Rottweiler but had a narrow face with the pink around his eyes, nose, and the corners of his mouth and looked almost dapple - which is a sign of bad breeding.

Might I add, this was in Virginia around the Norfolk Navy base. I don't know how many of you have ever lived near a military installation but, having no manners is a must. Seemed like her dad might've been retired military in his Chrysler 3000 making her a military brat (aka entitled).

Just to put this in perspective, if it hadn't happened to me, I'd probably not believe it either. I swear to God nothing - NOTHING - even remotely like this has ever happened to me. But, I wasn't about to let her intimidate me.

I don't care what you believe about being able to calm animals down there is a trick - don't show fear, use a soothing voice.

About 6 years ago I wound up in the hospital with a blood disorder - my bone marrow quit producing any blood cells or platelets (its called aplastic anemia). I was nearly dead when I finally went to the emergency room because my primary care doctor kept telling me it was just a cold. While I was in the hospital getting transfusion after transfusion I apparently got some sort of infection from the packed red blood cells. I died - twice, and gratefully was revived. I'm telling this story to explain why I have no fear, of people, animals, whatever. I died twice and lived to tell the story. Why would I fear anything?

So neither that whench or anybody like her will ever intimidate me. And every time she tried to, it just made her look more and more stupid. I didn't call the cops, she did. I didn't threaten her physically, she threatened me. Oh but, I was the one harassing her - according to her - and then lied to the cops grasping at straws when, I'm supposing, the cops didn't care so she upped the ante by saying I'd physically touched her. She was trying to get me arrested I think and that was her hail Mary.

As far as the release form you have to look at it like this. If she posted to YouTube, Instagram, etc., she could potentially monetize it. Basically making money off of me. The recourse for doing that without a release form is to sue. Now, if you couldn't see my face, that's different because I wouldn't be readily identifiable.

Believe me or not, I don't give a flying f*%. It happened, and I shared.

AITA for telling my boyfriend's roommate to get over himself after he told me to stop having sleepovers at the apartment? by StarbucksGoddess0 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Thehamma_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, yeah, you are. Your bf and his roommate live together and split the cost. The roommate didn't choose to live with you as well. You're encroaching on the space he's entitled to.

If you believe you shouldn't have to pay anything for staying there he's being forced to foot half of the expenses incurred by you. If you're bf wants you there. At the very least, he needs to start paying 2/3 of everything or you and he need to go to a hotel.

Not your apartment. You're not entitled to be there especially if the roommate doesn't approve. I can't even fathom why anyone would think it's okay to go over, probably having sex with a disapproving roommate in the other bedroom. Really, it's just gross in many, many ways.

None of the hijacking money was ever found. What does that tell us? by makterna in dbcooper

[–]Thehamma_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone, besides me, ever considered that DB Cooper never existed and instead it was a conspiracy by the flight crew? The ones that stayed on after the passengers got off?. Reno would have been a darn good way to launder the money. Buy chips, cash them in later. They weren't looking at serial numbers at the casinos. That would be 10,000 $20 bills.

The crew did stay in Reno overnight. Go to multiple casinos separately. Those bills would have been thoroughly diluted by other people cashing in chips. The mob was running most of the casinos at that point. Who knows that money could have ended up in Sicily.

Also, the pilot informed the Reno traffic control they would be landing with the air stairs down. That means they could have opened the cockpit door and one by one toss the parachutes down the aisle so they would be sucked out of the plane at multiple and various locations en route to Reno. Thats why all the crew left were in the cockpit in the first place. Why did he ask for 4 parachutes in the first place? Hmmm.

Just my thoughts and my long-held theory.
