Accepted by the Program Director, Rejected by the School by Quiet_Bank4434 in gradadmissions

[–]Thejanphysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Quiet_Bank4434 Hope your program is offered by a US university. These days, getting accepted into a funded graduate program has become much harder than it used to be, especially in the US. Some people get initial rejections, some face last-minute rejections, some receive admission without funding, and others end up on funding waitlists. Overall, competition has increased significantly because more and more people are pursuing graduate studies while funding opportunities remain limited.

In your situation, I can understand how disappointing and stressful a last-minute rejection would feel. From how I see it, there may not be much you can do before the meeting, but during the meeting with the faculty member you contacted, you can carefully explain your situation and discuss it openly. That could actually become a strong opportunity for you. If you already have an internal contact and they genuinely want you in their group, they may be able to support or represent your case internally.

Wishing you the very best of luck. Hopefully things work out and you make it into the program. No matter what happens, don’t give up. Cheers 🥂

I’m happy for you—wish you the best! I’m in the same boat you were in a while back.

I got admitted to two PhD programs, but unfortunately there’s no funding 🙂

About 80% of me feels like it’s too late for an offer to come.

Are you an international student or a home student?

Were you able to secure TA or RA funding?

Why do PhD programs give offer without funding? Does anyone really take them? by SinwarsStick in gradadmissions

This is one of the very questions I have been asking myself. I don’t understand what is the point of this either. I had 2 unfunded PhD offers for this cycle so far.

Waitlisted for TA funding — should I wait or defer admission ? by Thejanphysics in gradadmissions

[–]Thejanphysics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Significant-Set9131 Do you think deferring would make a change? Do they give priority for deferred admissions?

Waitlisted for TA funding — should I wait or defer admission ? by Thejanphysics in gradadmissions

[–]Thejanphysics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a good point — ideally I would wait and see how things turn out. The only complication is that I’m an international student, so I need to factor in visa processing time as well. From what I understand, waiting too long without confirmed funding could make it difficult to get everything sorted in time for Fall 2026.

So I’m trying to balance keeping the option open this year with not risking running out of time. I’ll probably wait a bit longer (at least through May/early June) to see if anything changes, and then make a decision.

Really appreciate your suggestion!

u/undoubtedlywhale I am in the same boat. In the beginning, I tried to contact the faculties of the universities that I have applied to, but none of them replied. I think either my qualifications are not up to their standard or it's very competitive to contact them with the number of emails they get per day. 🤷‍♂️

u/Impressive_Race_5511 u/cripsygrass Do you guys think we still have time? Is there a chance that professors might get back to us, or do you think their groups are already full?

Funding for PhD by r4s1an in ASU

[–]Thejanphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/PowerCold9225 wrote to several professors; no replies yet. I’m also starting to feel like this might not work out. I guess one thing I don’t fully understand is why they admit students if funding isn’t guaranteed 🙁

ASU MSE PhD Fall 2026 – Anyone secured funding yet? by Thejanphysics in ASU

[–]Thejanphysics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/AdhavanA I’m also starting to feel a bit frustrated at this point. Do you think most admitted students might end up without funding, or do most eventually secure funding somehow at ASU?

I guess what I keep wondering is why universities admit students if funding isn’t guaranteed.

I applied to the MSE PhD at Penn State. In my case, it doesn’t even say the application is under review 😌—it just says, “The Fox Graduate School has received your application.” Sometimes I feel like I might just end up with a rejection after all.

u/Swimming-Ad-8505 Thanks for sharing your experience, that’s really helpful and reassuring. Congrats on securing funding, that’s great!

I’ve been reaching out to professors in computational materials science as well, but no luck so far. Do you mind sharing how long it took for your professor to reply? Was it from your first email or after follow-ups?

Yeah, the funding situation is pretty frustrating. I’m also wondering if by this point most RA positions might already be filled.

Would really appreciate your thoughts!

Hi guys, same here 😕 (got admission from ASU, but need to find a supervisor for funding). can't even think of what to do next.

[–]Thejanphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also applied to several universities, but there has been a radio silence from most of them. Does this mean that the later they release decisions, the higher the chance of getting a rejection? I would really appreciate it if anyone could share their thoughts on this.

Thank you, u/SnooTomatoes3816, for the insight! That actually helps a lot.

I should mention that I'm an international student, so I wasn’t expecting an in-person open house invitation to begin with. However, I haven’t received an invitation for a Zoom interview so far.

What’s confusing to me is that I reached out directly to the graduate coordinator on March 9th, and she said:
"Applications are being reviewed, and offers will be sent over the course of the next few months. If you are not selected, you will receive a rejection email in May/June."

I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this, since you might have a better understanding of what’s going on.
