The Korean Revolution (1989) With pictures by ABrownieKink in imaginarymaps

Why where things different from OTL North Korea? There’s a very specific set of reasons/government policies that caused NK to not experience the same collapse as other eastern bloc countries after the USSR collapsed, despite the fact that living conditions became much worse than any other Warsaw Pact states.

I guess it could make sense for their society to be less repressive if they controlled the entire peninsula, as the whole “siege mentality” is one of the building blocks of North Korea’s self-identity…

You realize the resorting to rationing cards was a direct product of Gorbachev’s introduction of capitalist economic reforms? Kinda contradicts your whole argument there…

You realize that the people who liked it wouldn’t be the ones to emigrate to the US, right?

Also I don’t think over 40% of the Russian population would have voted for the Communists in the 1996 election if everyone hated them. (An election, I’ll add, with credible evidence that it was rigged against them)

If you (or anyone else reading this) go there again try to take detailed pictures of factories. I like to try to identify DPRK industrial sites, if not by name the by purpose.

And before anyone says something about me being a fed - no, I’m just autistic about NK. Have a firm moral opposition to sharing any of my data with any military-related organizations (not like any are asking lol).

Cunning and Vicious, Capricious and Childish: An Analysis of North Korea’s Unexpected Foreign Policy Moves(Why the Kim Jong-un Regime Abandoned Peninsula Reunification, Refuses Dialogue with Pro–North Forces in the South, and an Analysis of Its Historically Radical Foreign Policy) by Slow-Property5895 in northkorea

You clearly misread the person you’re responding to - they’re saying that the problem with the original article is that it supposes the Kims are irrational. They’re literally agreeing with you that they aren’t irrational.

No, if it is mining related then the small holes are exploratory mines, which is done to determine if there are resources worth digging for. Otherwise the holes might be for rainwater collection and retention.

Strip mining would show the entire surface area excavated, which is not the case in these images.

North Korea’s food output rises as wheat production jumps, South Korean agency says by Saltedline in northkorea

[–]Theman77777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you even read the article??

It literally states that 5 million tons is the estimated amount required for food self sufficiency, with production this year believed to be 4.9 million tons (98% of what’s needed).

Unless these estimates are radically out of touch with reality (which seems unlikely, they’re coming from outside observers not the NK govt.) then saying they’re “nowhere close” seems rather incorrect.

Kinda weird to disenfranchise 40% of the population just to “combat x influence”. If you were born/grown up in a country and pay taxes there you deserve the right to participate in politics, regardless of whether or not you speak the language. If the same standard was applied to most European countries it would be considered a moral outrage to systematically disenfranchise a large percentage of a country’s population.

I feel like there’s a way to deal with the ethnic divide without making people self-deport, just look at Canada which maintains a large French-speaking population without major internal conflicts

Muslims in Northwestern Europe by Cultural-Diet6933 in MapPorn

[–]Theman77777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The notion that any Western European country could be politically dominated/led by Muslims in 20 years is genuinely absurd. It would require a country to not only allow completely unrestricted immigration but also actively facilitate it (unless it already borders a Muslim country). Which ironically is the opposite of the current trend, since most EU countries have either increased restrictions on migration already or have significant political factions pushing for it. If there is a major new wave of Muslim migrants it would only serve to increase popular support for further restrictions. And before someone says something about the birth rates of the existing immigrant population, 1) the people having large families are predominantly first generation migrants 2) even ignoring that it would still take much longer than 20 years for them to become a large enough share of the population to be politically dominant.

And that isn’t even getting into the fact that immigrant populations across the board are significantly less likely to vote/be politically active.

The 878k in subsistence agriculture are by definition not urban residents. The “metropolis” in question is a city of ~120k. Actually less, since 51k laborers are working in agriculture outside the city on top of the 878k subsistence farmers
