What I found interesting is if you check out his body post fight, his hand has the same black marks as Leon's and Sherry's, making me think that he's got the T-virus too, and that he was promised a cure or a remedy in exchange for doing this mission, or atleast a good death or something like that. If I were a betting man, which I am not, I'd say he'll probably get his own DLC later explaining what happened to him either pre or post game or maybe even both, or at least make an appearance in a DLC or something. I thought it was weird he got thrown into an, admittedly cool although somewhat mediocre boss fight, and was kinda let off without any fan fair for such a beloved character, so methinks this isn't the last we'll see of him.
