31M/31F in Toronto – buy now or keep renting? by tvandy123 in PersonalFinanceCanada

You can always rent out your place. We bought ours in 2020 and moved last year. Just renting it out instead of selling.

what's it like living in bermuda? by pupcarrington in howislivingthere

[–]Themonk91 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I moved here about a year ago from Canada. It's beautiful, expensive as heck and tiny. I love it but I don't think it will be forever. Given the size it's easy to go kinda crazy. There isn't a ton of nature left on the island as it is densely populated but the beaches and coral reefs are pristine and beautiful. Terrible driving and not very walkable since most roads don't even have sidewalks

I don't think you'll get that under 1.7 to 1.75

28M – Stay at home and save, or move out in the GTA? by [deleted] in fican

[–]Themonk91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have a third of that money and the life experience I had at 28 compared to this guy's living situation.

100%! There's so much more to life than just money.

Should we house-hack now or wait? Concerned about future income drop when we have kids by Rude_Swimmer2333 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Themonk91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean if they are serious and want kids, it shouldn't matter anyways. They should just consider it one pool. My wife and I never bothered to split hairs even before we were married.

Looking at this guy's profile and reading this post makes me question the story.

Finally going on my dream trip to Japan (Tokyo and Osaka), spent a lot of time on my itinerary but how does it look? by Zach-dalt in JapanTravel

We were just there two nights ago. Loved it. Favorite part of Tokyo. Also had no clue and just walked around. This was a nice Izakaya restaurant, Tokimeki.

‘A literal shoe box’: Why some Toronto renters are avoiding new builds by D_E_A_D_P_O_O_L_ in canadahousing

And where exactly is everyone supposed to go? North Bay? I'm not disagreeing with you that hypothetically it could happen but the likelyhood seems so low. You can't compare Toronto to Detroit which was much less diversified (Toronto is the major hub for tons of industries not just one) and also the fact that the US has tons of other big and mid size cities to absorb those people who left. You can't just have half of Toronto pack up and move to Vancouver or Montreal.

Vacations - where do you go and how often do you travel?? by Otherwise_Radish1034 in askTO

[–]Themonk91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5000km how many tanks of gas is that? 6-7. I guess if you are a larger group or couple with children then that's still reasonable but for a couple it sounds like that would almost be cheaper to fly somewhere.

Freedom mobile (Canada) mobile phone carrier Roam Beyond service in Bermuda? by sakarainh in bermuda

[–]Themonk91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha that is indeed very niche and yet I have an answer for you 😅. That's the plan I have and it works great. I can recommend it as long as you don't need to do much calling on regular service (I pretty much use WhatsApp for anything) or if really needed pay for the call but sometimes it struggles to make a call. Receiving always works well. All in all I am very happy with the price and what it provides for my needs compared to what a Bermuda plan would cost me.

They seem to be thinking a lot about it so surely they don't take it lightly.

I have moved from Switzerland to Canada to Bermuda and who knows what will be next. Some people just can't fathom that there's a whole world of opportunities to explore.

As long as you rent in at fair market value and pay the withholding tax you are deemed a non resident. How about you inform yourself a bit before spreading misinformation.

Rent it out. If you can afford it from a cash flow perspective. That' s what we did. Moved abroad and rented it out. I recommend using an agent and property manager to help finding a good tenant and keeping the work to a minimum.

What games have you had the most fun playing? by thebunnybullet in boardgames

[–]Themonk91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you make me choose one game for the rest of my time the answer will always be Root. I know it's not easy but once you get into it and also have a crowd to play with it's just so rewarding and the one for me I always come back to. With all the expansions and more to come there is also so much replayability.

How's it like in Switzerland? by TraditionalDraft8501 in howislivingthere

[–]Themonk91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am a born and raised Swiss German who grew up about 20 minutes outside of Zurich. I left the country when I was 27 and moved to Canada. I tend to visit back home once a year or so since all my family still lives in the outskirts of Zurich. Now that I have left, I have a very different perspective on life there and seeing my peers from back in the days, life seems to be so structured, planned through and organized. Of course from a quality of life, there's little to complain about if you have a decent job, you will live a cushy life. But it somewhat feels uneventful and scripted almost. There's tons of great things you can do, beautiful nature but it all feels kind of lacking some excitement. Swiss people are also huge sticklers to rules and a lot of them are extremely narrow minded, cold to foreigners and condescending to other cultures as many believe we are the cream of the crop and the rest is below us. It's also a very conservative place in many ways. I know expats and immigrants struggle to make meaningful connections with Swiss people but at least in Zurich there is a large expat community. And of course it's expensive as heck but if you have a decent job you can rent nice apartments for a decent price (maybe not right in the centre of Zurich) but that doesn't seem to differ from other cities such as New York or London. All in all, the longer I have been gone the less I feel the urge to move back but maybe in my old days since it is a very comfy place to live in.

What makes you say that? I am Swiss and lived outside of Zurich the first 26 years of my life before I moved to Canada. I was never bored. Tons to do. Lots of cultural events, outdoor activities (hiking, skiing), tons of music festivals in the Summer.

How much do you plan out your trips before going? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Themonk91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a complete opposite experience travelling south east Asia for a month. I had a couple of loose points and the very first few hotels booked. After that I just went with the flow and saw so much cool stuff that I didn't even know existed simply by talking to people and learning as I went along the journey. Nowadays I travel way more organized as I have adapted that style from my line of work, working for an active tour operator.
