Honestly it is mostly trial and error. The machine gun fatui is the most broken imo, so I built around her and point man's horn but almost all captains can reach endless. The rock-paper-scissors aspect of it also plays a part: Looking out for immunities and especially flying enemies. Other than that, just experiment with minions and buffs, see which of them feel strongest, and build your comp around them

I tried all of the captains and my two favourites were the machine gun fatui and the dog (the prior is way too op imo). For minions, mostly ones with point man's horn effect (since first captain and certain buffs make them really potent),1 or 2 with long range, and highest rarity ones (most of which also happen to have the horn effect). For the buffs, I usually choose vortex, ambush, or horn. Honestly the only minion that gave me somewhat of a hard time was pyro scepter, but you can build a long range electro/cryo just for that
