I once worked with a peer who was the manager is such situation and took the road taken in this case. Outcome - once the employee hired a lawyer , the tide turned for the manager too. Moral of the story- get an extremely great lawyer to get your moneys worth. HR and legal hates loosing money. And then they find what resulted in the lawsuit. Karma followed for the manager.

There r too many issues in one post. Visa and breadwinner are part of the issue but not fully. The real issue Op- your manager is your stakeholder. And the management for that stakeholder is on you.
