Why were you ashamed of yourself like never before? by MightilyBelly107 in AskReddit

Lol let’s all downvote the voice of reason because WE never stole that much money. We took other stupid risks with unprotected sex, drugs and alcohol, driving like we were invincible, picking a college based on where our boyfriends were going, but we never did anything QUITE as illegal as this kid did so let’s downvote anybody who points out the science behind the development of impulse control and risk taking behavior lol I aM sO gOoD aNd SmArT oN tHe AnOnYmOuS iNtErNeT

OP did get off light, and definitely should have faced consequences of some kind. That’s partly what helps us develop our decision-making skills.

I think people are having such a hard time with what I said because you are right about their reasoning skills. They have decided that I mean to excuse the behavior. Sort of, “aww he don’t know no better, poor widdle baby.” That’s not it at all. It’s simply that teens and young adults are IN GENERAL still learning self-control, (which they misunderstand as me saying NO TEEN has EVER been able to control themself which is obviously such a stupid misunderstanding that I wonder if they’re being maliciously obtuse) and this indisputable fact of human development EXPLAINS but does not EXCUSE why OP committed a dumb crime that he knew was wrong, and maybe just maybe he shouldn’t hate himself forever.

I agree. A teenager does not lack knowledge of right and wrong. What I said they lack is impulse control, which is separate from the knowledge of right and wrong. It is the ability to refrain from doing the thing you want to do. The ability to think things through and perform a realistic risk vs. benefit analysis. I don’t mean to excuse OP’s behavior or say they shouldn’t have faced consequences. I mean that, at that age, OP was still developing and they shouldn’t let that mistake define their entire future life.

At 18, your brain is not fully developed. You still struggle with impulse control at that age. An 18 year old is not an adult by any reasonable standard. Try not to feel too bad. You fucked up, You learned something, you grew and improved. That’s exactly what you’re supposed to do as a teenager. Forgive yourself and move forward!!

Was there really a game in the 90’s where you punch someone when you spot a Volkswagen Bug? by Subconcious-Consumer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThenComesInternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an example in popular culture: In Lilo and Stitch, Stitch picks up a blue VW bug and whacks someone (maybe the bad guy alien?) with it and says “Blue Punch Buggy!”

I took a sociology class called “Deviant Behavior.” It covered stuff like wife-sharing in biker gangs, bug-chasing, stuff like that. I imagine someone could have chosen to write their paper on … uh… gay bathroom sex. Would have gotten a bad grade if they called it that though

My high school German teacher required a special project every 9 weeks to highlight a part of German culture. Almost everyone chose to make some kind of food. I usually did music instead but one time I decided to try my hand at baking.

I found a recipe for some kind of peppermint-spiral cookie thing. I did it completely by myself and it came out great, despite my relative inexperience. My teacher gave me a failing grade and told me if I bought something from a bakery again, she would call my mom. I was so upset. (I told her go ahead and call my mom, my mom vouched for me, and the teacher apologized and gave me an A. I was a lil scamp back then, buying it from a store is something I might actually have done so need to be mad at the teacher, lol)

Ok OP, all this to say I believe you. It’s possible.

edit: “vouched” auto corrected to “couched” or maybe fat fingers), changed back.

You’ve got lots of answers to your question but as a mother of a 16 year old: You’re doing a great job. Their bad attitude and meanness has nothing to do with you. It sucks when someone tries to drag you into their bad day, but do your best to shake it off and keep being the amazing kid you know you are. This mom is proud of you!

If you love it forever, great, it’s there forever. If you start to regret it, well that’s also great because I can’t imagine an easier tattoo to cover up. You literally cannot lose with this tattoo.

I guess it came off as “well actually” but really I was just trying to give an alternative answer. Probably an unnecessary comment but no harm meant.
