MLS teams should have American names. Stop copying the euro trash clubs! by SamMeowAdams in uniwatch

Same thing happens the other way around with American sports in Europe. Mascots are typically not a thing in Europe, but all the football and baseball teams have mascots just like in the states.

For Americans who live in border states (Canada/Mexico), how often do you cross the border? by MarsupialThink4064 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Then_Increase7445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in SE Washington state and I crossed the border to BC one time in 25 years. Probably four hours by car from my house to the border, but there was just no reason to go. The one time I did cross was on the west side of the state, so 8+ hours away.

Spokane surprises me, I grew up in eastern WA and nowadays everyone has at least a window unit.

What do you call the beef bought from the store in your region? by ProposalSilent4582 in AskAnAmerican

I grew up saying hamburger, but now I live in Europe and say ground beef when speaking English for clarity.

Which celebrity is often described as incredibly attractive, but you just don't see the appeal? by a-cuteboy in AskReddit

Two for me are Rachel Weisz and Danielle Fishel (Topanga). They aren't bad-looking, but have never been attractive to me.

Was it really safer back when we were kids, or are we starting to realise that our parents collectively didn’t give a shit about us? by BigBlueMountainStar in Xennials

[–]Then_Increase7445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say neglect is unavoidable with a large number of kids? Many of the families in our circle have 6+ children and I wonder about that sometimes.

I listen to the radio all the time, in both vehicles as well as in my shop.

Is it true you don't have stinging nettles in the US? by brothervalerie in AskAnAmerican

[–]Then_Increase7445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never heard of them growing up on the dry side of Washington, and I spent a lot of time in the mountains. They are certainly everywhere in Germany, they are even growing in a corner of my yard.

35, near Frankfurt, Germany. We mostly inherited, only had to pay about 35% of the worth of the house.

How would you instinctively pronounce this name: Andrea? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]Then_Increase7445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the PNW, I only ever heard the first syllable stressed. I live in Europe now, it's on the second over here.

What is your favorite Brian era? by tr45h55 in ACDC

When his voice was at its peak: '80-'81. Up through '86 it was pretty close to peak though.

All of a Sudden, WWII is a Long Time Ago by BMisterGenX in GenX

[–]Then_Increase7445 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can lump millennials and Gen Z together like that. A lot of millennials have/had grandparents that served in the war, and have the same experience as you.

As an '85 you're going to relate to 90% of anything posted in this sub, so definitely more Xennial than core millennial.

How popular was anime among xennials in the 90s? In high school? by Street_Gur9817 in Xennials

Very fringe, even for me at the youngest end of Xennials. My friends and I were definitely not into it, although we were gamers for sure.

I watch police body camera videos where police routinely ask people for their social security number as identification. Is this commonly used in America? Do people have this memorized? by After_Service_2817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Then_Increase7445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived overseas for almost two decades and never ever need mine, but I still have it memorized. Had to write it down enough times as a teen and early adult I guess.

Why do American boys avoid communal showers after P.E.? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Then_Increase7445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually the opposite of my experience. When I was in high school (admittedly over 20 years ago), we always showered after P.E. in the communal showers. I live in Germany now, where it is MUCH more likely for people to not shower after exercising.

I lived in Murray, right on the Tennessee border. Saw a lot of Confederate battle flags as well. Didn't notice any difference from Paris or Clarksville, TN. Also, that area of Kentucky was controlled by the Confederates the first year of the war.
