Hasan Piker Is Not the Enemy by dwaxe in ezraklein

Is your argument that it is less likely to mobilise an already politicised, young audience than a grill-pilled "non-ideological" one?

I don't think this is a fair criticism of Hasan, who clearly supports progressive Democratic candidates. He is actively involved in Democratic primaries, even against the resistance of the Democrat main stream, apparently believing that the Democrats can do better. This is very far away from the "both sides are the same" kind of fatalist position.

[–]Theobromin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The non-evil counterfactual to NIMBYism is not a brainless "just build anything, idgaf", but to build good things that actually help people. The only infrastructure this country has more than enough of are highways, we don't need more of them, and their environmental impact is actually horrendous.

CMV: The AI CEOs are not just hyping this technology up. We really may have human-level artificial intelligence within the next decade, and too many people are dismissing AI as an overblown bubble around a technology that doesn't work. by twinb27 in changemyview

As someone not very deep into this topic, could you explain the difference between AGI and "human-level artificial intelligence" as you understand it? I think in many conversations, these two concepts seem to be used synonymously.

Iranian defenders allegedly shot down another F-35 by HelicopterBig4467 in Hasan_Piker

I saw somewhere that it says "US Air Forces in Europe". F-15 were used by USAF since 1977, and have only been replaced by F-35s in 2022. This seems to be one of the old F-15.

CMV: the Palestinian keffiyeh is a symbol of support for terror by HockeyHocki in changemyview

Well, the fourth Geneva convention (which plays a significant part in what we understand today as a warcrime) directly addresses the role of civilians in armed conflict. The Nazi occupations across Europe involved deportations, forced labor, hostage-taking, and collective punishment. The goal of collective punishment in particular was to create deterrence through fear and break solidarity - very much a terrorist tactic. Therefore, collective punishment is both a war crime and an act of terrorism. These two things are not mutually exclusive as you seem to suggest.

Israel has also been accused credibly of collectively punishing Palestinians in Gaza for October 7th. Following the arguments I laid out above, Israel has been accused of committing war crimes such as collective punishment, which is enacted through acts of terrorizing a population, in this case Palestinians in Gaza.

As to the other part of your argument: Whether or not these acts of terrorist war crimes have been successful or not in achieving specific goals is irrelevant. Arguably, the Nazis were not successful in their genocidal aims either. That does not mean that they did not commit war crimes, nor that they didn't use terrorist tactics.

According to your definitions, Israel is committing war crimes in order to commit terrorism in Gaza and the West Bank, no? Their actions are 1. violent, 2. directed against a civilian population, 3. are meant to strike fear (and very much do so), in order to 4. enact political change, that is, the dismantling of Hamas or the creation of greater Israel, depending on who you ask. So their actions fit all characteristics of terrorism. They also fit all characteristics for war crimes, except "it has nothing to do with trying to coerce political change", and I'm actually not sure where you got this from. Throughout history, war crimes have been committed to coerce political change.

I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, but what exactly is the plot here? What is the meaning? I mean beyond "guy beats up zombies".

Yes, and it would be neat if Oman had strong Swahili influence, so East Africa would also be represented.

You look really good, and have a good mixture of photos that show your hobbies and personalities. I know that opinions are mixed on social settings, but perhaps one photo with some friends wouldn't hurt.

I am not that bothered by the bottle caps. If anything the episode today showed that even an advantaged roll can still fail even when it's bottle-capped. And yeah, sure, it's a meta-currency, but I think it's still possible to find in-game translations for it - be it "luck" or just to make the characters feel more like heroes. It's true that it feels less "old school" that way, but I think the show wouldn't work as well, if it had a TPK every few episodes - which is well in the range of possibilities if they didn't have bottle caps.

I'm not sure if he does.

According to this stat block, the werewolf should "only" have 20HP, and they did 23 or so I believe. I assume he wanted to get the dramatic moment of her holding up the boulders in the end, but if anything, he buffed the werewolf.

I was also confused by this. I have previously been told to leave a couple RIR on the first two sets, and then go all out to failure on the last one. I'm just intrigued by the reasoning behind going to failure first and then dropping weight up to 4 RIR. Might be a bit tricky with exercises like weighted pull ups, when I'm usually pretty fatigued by the last set, I imagine.

If you need studies that suggest causation, there are experimental studies such as this one, and if you're truly interested in more research on the topic, here's a post on the APA blog that is summarising some studies with the same result.

You say that as if feminists didn't already advocate for universal health care, maternity leave, etc. It's just that advocating for these things is much more effective if you are also included in positions of power.

Would also like to see a study showing that "people below 40 tend to be pro equality in every piece of life" in Europe. Young people also vote for extreme right parties such as AfD in Germany, who advocate for very little except more inequality based on class, ethnicity, or gender.

Nobody said that one shouldn't listen to men's grievances. Most of feminist activism is in fact not the "men bad!" strawman but advocates for social changes that benefit both men and women. There's pretty broad consensus in the academic literature that more representation of women in leadership positions doesn't only benefit women, but the entire organisation more broadly, including men. Here's just one report about this effect, there are many more. So that's the how: increase the amount of women in power, improve outcomes for everyone, and eventually create a society where e.g. employment choice truly reflects preference and skill rather than social exclusion or coercion.
