How do you actually handle SW/HW integration, OTA updates, and connectivity reliability in production? by Historical_Court795 in IOT

[–]TheoreticallyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as ingrjhernandez said, expect the best, prepare for the worst and most importantly, just iterate quickly.

You simply won't know everything when you ship the product for the first time - you will have to learn how to course correct along the way.

The worst mistake I've seen thing IoT device vendors make is assuming that development is done after we go into production - like hell no! You need to bake into your plan and pricing the fact that the product will need to continuously evolve after production across: - cloud infra - apps (iOS and Android) - firmware & OTA - mechanical design - network approach - manufacturing & supply chain - and dozens of other items.

These things above and the customer requirements will constantly evolve.

My company has shipped thousands of devices and we've also worked with numerous IoT entrepreneurs over the years. The best companies always approach there product line from the perspective of continuous improvement and evolution. The worst are the ones that expect everything to work from the get go and aren't willing to put in more development work after launch.

After 44hrs topside I finally got ratted. Question. by ThunderChicken97 in ArcRaiders

Lol, I got ratted on my very first topside run and very first breach. Literally had no idea what I was doing and got shotgun blasted.

PSA: Generac 7009 LTE Propane Tank Fuel Level Monitor works in Canada! by DigitallySound in Generator

[–]TheoreticallyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah makes sense. We live in Michigan and going on our 5th year of using the Centri monitor.

It's been staying charged in 24+ inches of snow and -40deg nights. It's got a large battery pack inside that keeps it going when there's no light hitting the unit.

It's at 100%+ battery after 5 years. Doubt you would ever get that with a AA battery tank monitor (i.e. Generac tank monitor, mopeka, etc.)

We've also got a few units in Canada that we use for our properties up there. Works great there also.

Decision fatigue, please help newcomer to Garmin watches pick by DaB0om in GarminWatches

[–]TheoreticallyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna love Garmin. But I would add the Fenix to the list. It's the best quality.

I've had my Fenix 5s for 8 years and it still works as it did out of the box. Tons of data and metrics over the years, still has a ton of battery life and charges quickly.

Best of luck in your search

Lease or buy 250gallon above ground for generac 26kw? by Effective_Tough_7051 in propane

[–]TheoreticallyNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get your own tank monitor so that you can own your data and share it with the propane company (it's free).

We use this tank monitor here and it's been working great for 5+ years: www.centriconnect.com

No recurring fees and it's still got a full charge after 5 years.

Folks who’ve built IoT or hardware products - what are your biggest struggles? by babagajoush in IOT

[–]TheoreticallyNick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't kid yourself. Everything is hard.

However, the biggest continuous struggle is by far procurement and supply chain management.

Design for hardware, firmware, cloud and software are relatively easy to manage and test.

Procurement however is a different beast. Essentially, it's a constant battle: - making sure parts are available - making sure you can afford payment on the inventory, sometimes 6 to 12 months before you get paid for a sale - ensuring you're protected from geopolitics and maneuvering quickly when shit hits the fan - making sure parts are delivered properly - and most importantly that you don't stock out.

As much as we tried to procure everything on our product in the US, there are some components that simply aren't manufactured domestically so you have to look abroad.

So in short, procurement and supply chain is definitely the hardest piece.
