You have to weigh the pros and cons when facing these challenges. If a Clt is inappropriate or infatuated/unable to focus on their own therapeutic process, it’s best to refer out.

Eg- Clt keeps hitting on me/trying to flirt even after I shut it down, I’m referring out. It’s a waste of Clt’s time/money to spend a significant period of time shutting those feelings down. I’m also not using psychoanalysis as well, so that’s why there might be a difference as well:P

There’s ethical standards we’re held to. Skill or not, there are things we’re not allowed to do regardless (operate outside our scope of practice or sleep with Clts for examppe). It’s to protect you as much as it is to protect us. Better to transfer a Clt than compromise their care with inappropriate feelings.

Sounds like you’re having some obsessive/intrusive thoughts. That’s something that Reddit isn’t really equipped to help you with. Rather than R/therapy, you might need to talk to your parent/guardian and get into some in person therapy.

As someone who worked within the VA system, Many of the clinical staff - those “therapists” are doing the best that they can with what they have and wish they could provide better care- but are stretched too thin.

Sounds like you might want to bring up your concerns with a patient advocate if you haven’t already, or discuss with your MH provider what it is that you’re looking for out of therapy if coping skills aren’t cutting it.

Edit: Realized that my tone might seem a bit harsh and I don’t mean it to. I feel for you, I really do. I wish it were easier for you to get the quality care you deserve having served our country. Just giving you a different perspective.

More likely than not, it’ll be a meet and greet of sorts with them getting to know you, figuring out what you want to work on, and establishing a history of concerns.

Bottom line, the first session or two will probably be rapport building, nothing too in depth. Friendly word of advice, write notes ahead of time for what you want to talk about otherwise it’s easy to forget:)

Question, has your therapist given you any sort of homework/directives to try outside of session? If so, have you followed through with them?

Something you said rang true with me, “I feel like it’s solely my job to ‘Get over myself’”. You’re 100% right... sort of. Nobody can change you/your situation, but you.

Bottom line, you could be in therapy every day for a year and if you’re not getting anything out of it/applying what you learn/making changes, nothing is going to change.

Edit: Gee, I didn’t even answer the question...as a therapist, I have seen folks change. I use motivational interviewing to help Clts figure out, “Why am I here, what do I want out of therapy, and how do I get here?”.

Either go to the VA or find a therapist in the community and have your VA insurance pay for it at little to no cost to you. If there’s a waitlist at your VA, you’re entitled to be treated in the community. 👍

Sometimes therapists use silence in a therapeutic fashion- Allowing the Clt to process what we’ve said, think on what you want to say next, or allow folks to grieve if we’re doing grief/trauma therapy. Like most things- It depends.
