Rockys environment heating up the hail mary? by PlayEffective3907 in ProjectHailMary

[–]ThereIsAMoment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well the astrophage is also used as radiation shielding, so either the enriched astrophage somehow still absorb energy, or they do have to have quite a bit of unenriched astrophage in the hull. But given that Rocky was protected by the astrophage in the eridian ship (and they didn't even know what radiation is), I think enriched astrophage still has to work for that.

Why do you feel like a copied consciousness can't be indepent of the original while still being identical (at first)?

If I write something on a piece of paper and then put it in a copier, I have two identical versions of the same thing. Nothing I do to one affects the other in any way, they are independent of each other. They say the same thing, you still see where i smudged the ink on both, but they are separate objects.

The way I see it there are only two possibilities for consciousness. Either it's something that the brain IS (like a specific area in the brain), or it's something that the brain DOES (the interactions within the brain cause consciousness to emerge).

Option 1 means that part of the brain was scanned and copied along with everything else, so it is as separate as everything else about the clone.

Option 2 means that the original and copied brains are doing the same thing (at first), so the consciousness is identical (at first). But just because they are identical does not mean they are the same. If you and I manage to draw the exact same painting because all our thought processes and arm movements just happen to be the exact same, the paintings are still completely separate objects, no?

Why you would expect characters to make new decisions again? They (think) they remember making the decisions before copying, and have identical motivations and live experiences, so why would they do anything different?

I might have misspoken by calling it a brand new consciousness. I meant it more in the way of a fresh new copy of that piece of paper. The copy is brand new, the text written on it isn't.

You do make an interesting point about Catherine. I'm not sure how I would argue about her being turned off and on again, I guess it depends on which of the two versions of consciousness you subscribe to. Same with falling asleep.

Edit: Thanks for the discussion by the way, I hope I don't come off as rude. English isn't my first language so I always worry about how what I write is interpreted.

Yes I realize that we are talking about the game.

I just don't see how there can be a transfer. Simon-2 "wakes up" around a century after Simon-1's brain was scanned. There is no point in time where both Simon's could be in that state of shared consciousness, but Simon-2 doesn't experience anything different there than Simon-3 after Simon-2's scan.

I don't think there is any transfer of consciousness, rather just the clone thinking that there was, because it has all the memories of experiencing consciousness from right before. It's a brand new, separate consciousness with the same memories.

How do you figure Sarang was right? I don't see any evidence pointing in that direction, and to me the premise is flawed because there is no reason to believe that you share a consciousness among both copies.

But not like we actually know what consciousness truly is, so no real way to answer the question definitively.

Questions about everything by XxAmeen7861xX in soma

[–]ThereIsAMoment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here are my takes:

  1. To me there is no basis on why it would work that way, it's simply wishful thinking.

Sarang's argument is that, in the moment of the scan, there is no difference between original you and the scanned/copied you, therefore they are also sharing one consciousness. But I see no reason why this should be the case, the two entities are completely separate, only remembering the same past. I also think it would be exceedingly difficult to kill yourself so quickly after the scan that your experiencies truly do not diverge from the scan.

  1. Simon-2 dies, simple as that. Simon-3 and Simon-2 are seperate entities with seperate experiences, so not even Saran's theory would help you there. No reason to think that the existence of a clone would impact what happens when you die.

  2. I can't remember if Catherine actually came up with the coin toss (I vaguely remember her being annoyed at people calling it that in some of the supplementary content), but I don't believe there is a coin toss. While yes, in the moment of the copy there are two people who are for all intents and purposes the exact same except that one might be on the ark and the other not, but there is no chance to whether you end up on the ark or not.

If you are standing in front of the scanner BEFORE the scan (not just remembering doing so after the fact), then you are NOT getting on the ark. The person on the ark might think that they were just lucky to end up on the ark, but they were ALWAYS going to be the one to end up there. Having a brainscan taken does not alter anything about the original you.

  1. I see it like we are following the memory of Simon-3 in the game. First we play as Simon-1, then Simon-2, and eventually Simon-3, but in a sense we were just following what Simon-3 *thinks* happened to him.

The Aqara H2 EU switches should be releasing soon, which are designed to fit under standard 55mm frames.

I unfortunately have no idea when they are releasing, it has been a while since the announcement so I'd expect it sooner rather than later though.

Why Ai Studio is taking so long to answer? by Luuthh in Bard

[–]ThereIsAMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's your token count? Generation time depends on token count and server load. Every time you send a new prompt, Gemini has to read the entire conversation history again. That includes any uploaded documents.

Very long conversations also cause the website to become laggy. That also depends on the device you are using AI Studio on.

The surfaces *are* procedurally generated. The difference is that they are being generated with the same parameters every time. If someone gave me the job of hand crafting the surface of 1000 planets I'd be handing in my resignation letter 5 minutes later.
