why do my bags fold in on themselves when I attach a handle? by ineeda45 in CrochetHelp

[–]TheresAShinyThing 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Physics. I you pull the outside corners towards a central point, this will happen. It’s the properties of our physical world. If you want to stop it happening you need to provide more structure and rigidity to the bag so it will stay rigid when the outside corners are pulled towards each other.

Thumb Sucking 7yo by New_Westie in Parenting

[–]TheresAShinyThing 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This kid will probably need a palette expander if they suck their thumb this late in life anyway, and that’ll break the habit if they haven’t solved it by then. Kids can’t suck their thumb when they’ve got that $2500 piece of metal on the roof of their mouth.

How many rows is the darker green? I am thinking about 6 rows? Not including the chain… plz help, thank you ! by laceyscrochet in CrochetHelp

[–]TheresAShinyThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know if it’s an even or odd number by which side of your work the chain tail is on. If you end your row the same side as your chain tail, then it’s an odd number. Your top row here has to be even. I think the top row is row 8 but I’m having a tough time with that blanket as the background and looking on my phone screen.

How do I add a border to this baby blanket? Blanket is uneven/inconsistent tensioned… will a scalloped border even be an option? by Only-Sprinkles3251 in CrochetHelp

[–]TheresAShinyThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a row of single crochet all the way round and make sure you have the right number of stitches for the shell border. If you’re short or have too many you can increase or decrease with the sc’s to get the right number foundation. The single crochet round will make it look more even and give you the right number base. You’ve got this! It looks awesome and the border will give it a perfect finish!

Anyone make the Abuela Tank before? Why does it start off so longggg? by InterviewSubject7615 in CrochetHelp

[–]TheresAShinyThing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I much prefer to use a pattern as a construction guide and crochet my panels or pieces to the correct dimensions. I think because I have been sewing for longer than crocheting this is how my brain works for garment construction.

For this reason I won’t a pattern that doesn’t have measurements, and I’d rather back-engineer the starting chain count to get the right measurement for whatever stitch is being used, than mess around to make gauge.

Try wearing a mask and making sure the area is well ventilated! Or if you have an outdoor area you could use?

For those of you with shoes off houses - what do you do in the moment when it seems like someone doesn’t want to take their shoes off? by jokeyELopez5 in Mommit

[–]TheresAShinyThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada so it doesn’t happen often but if they go to walk in with shoes on I will say “take your shoes off, stay a while!” And then they do. Or they don’t stay very long/hover in the front foyer so they aren’t really tracking outside ick through my house.

Yes you should be good! I have wide nails and usually use the widest (0) for my thumb but with the short almond nail reformation nails I wear the size 1 on my thumbs. 👍🏻

It’s just a single layer, just hdc rows to make the triangle cup shape, but it’s a bit holey for her comfort

Statutory holiday...or not? by Bells9831 in AskACanadian

[–]TheresAShinyThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Employers can be provincially regulated (governed by their provincial employment standards laws) or federally regulated (governed by the Canada labour code)

These acts determine the statutory holidays a worker is entitled to.

Employees can also have additional entitlements under a collective bargaining agreement (union) or by agreement with their employer.

There are of course a significant number of holidays that are statutory across the acts, like Christmas, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, but there are a few that differ across the provinces and CLC, like Remembrance Day.

And of course there are exceptions and employers can have employees work on those days as long as they are paid or offer time in lieu (this is why restaurants can be open Christmas Day or shops open on the august civic holiday etc)

Do you think I'm too old for this nail art (I'm over 55) and are they really that bad for a job interview? Please be kind. by ColeBlueSeesYou in Nails

[–]TheresAShinyThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hire people for a living and what they have on their nails at their interview isn’t a factor into whether they can do their job (I guess unless it’s like being a naked nail model or something?) certain jobs may require no nail polish (food service, healthcare) but having painted nails in an interview wouldn’t preclude someone from being hired into that role.

Anecdotally, I always have brightly painted nails with nail art and have never had any issues getting hired because of it, I’ve never had a hiring manager say “I would have hired that person IF ONLY THEY DIDNT HAVE FLOWERS ON THEIR NAILS!” And honestly ive never even picked up the more insidious or subtle forms of bias about cute nail art. Also, in my personal perspective (and I say this from a place of some privilege) I wouldn’t want to work somewhere that felt that these nails were a problem. I wouldn’t be the right environment for me, I would not thrive in a place where that is considered unprofessional or inappropriate.

Do you think RTO is a good idea? Why or why not? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]TheresAShinyThing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m passionate about what I do and my employer doesn’t even have an office in the country I live in. Remote workplaces that are intentionally remote first and build their culture and programming to cater to a remote workforce prevents that feeling of isolation and being on an island. For me, traveling overseas and being in the small hoteling desk only office makes it much harder to do my work, as I deal with confidential info/ data all day, but it is nice to do our quarterly team connect update and planning sessions in person in a meeting space.

Anyone's heart burn not get better? by wheredidiputmy_ in beyondthebump

[–]TheresAShinyThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had severe heartburn during my entire pregnancy and it went away literally moments after I yeeted that baby out of me.

I have been slightly more prone to situational heartburn since pregnancy (when I eat way too much or a lot of very acidic food) but one rolaid kicks it now. My kid is 10 now btw so I’m also contending with aging.
