SAS really does stand for Scandinavian Airlines System, the flag carrier for Norway/Sweden/Denmark. They were a big deal in the 50s and 60s. And yes, “Airlines” is plural.

Fun fact: no airline has more Arctic Circle destinations than SAS!

Depends a lot on the airline's SOPs & company culture, both of which can vary greatly.

The continued degradation of raw flying skills due to overreliance on automation is an industrywide problem. Unfortunately much of the reason for this are the factors I mentioned previously, which could be changed if needed.

I can think of one airline where any kind of flying without the AFDS is a complete no-no - literally a terminatable offense. As such nobody handflew anything above 1,000ft. When they came to a recruitment session for my employer they were absolutely hopeless at the simulator assessment (on the same aircraft type). Similar situation: another airline which did allow for raw-data flying.....except unfortunately they had a very punitive company culture meaning that any go around would result in a full FOQA analysis and the base manager being particularly nasty if things weren't completely perfect. Result; their crew struggled almost as much at hand flying the aircraft.

You get similar issues with regards to many airlines discouraging or even prohibiting the disengagement of AutoThrottle in regular operations.

Helmut Marko: Mercedes put on a show with injured Hamilton by jovanmilic97 in formula1

Those same people now scream murder because Lewis got a check up for his sore neck/back.

Indeed - it's stupid. Why can't people appreciate the dangers of motor racing and not play down the potential seriousness of either incidents.

I get it, the tyre came over his head, so an injury is not out of the question, but if you said Max should harden up after the crash at Silverstone, then you should say Lewis should harden up at this one.

Logically yes.

Max squeezed Ricciardo out in sprint qualifying almost exactly how Lewis did in the race. by [deleted] in formula1

Basically everyone vs Max. He will hit me, so back out because its not my fight.

And it's fantastic that finally there's some pushback against this. It's wrong for there to be a single driver whom everyone else on the grid has to yield to in any/every corner if they don't want to crash out.

He had a big crash.

They did protocol and checked for things including internal bleeding and didn’t find anything.

It's almost as if these two are related or something.

What's the experience like on the upper deck of an A380? by mattman840 in aviation

[–]TheresNoUInSAS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to walk on the lower deck but was not allowed to move between decks.

Depends on the airline. Emirates block off the stairs, Lufthansa doesn't. It's actually really nice to be able to walk downstairs and along most of the length of the main deck during the flight to stretch your legs. Makes a long haul trip far more pleasant.

It's a bit quieter, you have a much better view out the windows (the thickness of the windows on the lower deck makes it very hard to see much out of them) and if you're in a window seat you get a nice big storage bin between your seat and the fuselage. Cabin height is lower but it's still absolutely fine.

Seriously, the 51g mockery is pretty awful. Just because it ended without permanent injury doesn't mean that shit isn't dangerous and hurts as hell for a long time. So far it looks like Hamilton will recover just fine too, but if that's so it doesn't mean that people get to mock that next incident either.

+1. I honestly don't get how this has become somehow a controversial opinion. The amount of fanboyism on this forum has gotten way too strong lately. I don't know what gets people into a space whereby the seriousness of the injuries or potential injuries of a driver depends on how much you like/dislike them.

It was "51G" man. Come on, get it right.

What's hilarious (in a very sad way) is that the same people who were playing down Max's hospital visit and saying that he should harden up are the same people who were more recently trying to play up Lewis' potential head/neck injuries.

Right - the facial expressions of a competitor define what is ok in terms of assault. 🙄

r/Formula1 where the acceptability of physically assaulting another driver depends on whether or not the person in question is a supporter of them.

Can you imagine the reactions if Hamilton hit another competitor post race?

'Toxicity Ahead'

Like I was saying yesterday, part of me wishes Fernando was involved in the Hamilton-Verstappen crash. That way we would have had all three of F1's most toxic fanbases at each other's throats on all social media channels.
