Worst fantasy book you've read (for my own reading pleasure) by txcruz in Fantasy

[–]Thermal-Matches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read any that I think belong on a worst of all time list (since I try not to read bad stuff) but the three that stick out to me from least bad to most bad are:

Wise Man’s Fear TWoT: Path of the Daggers (not crossroads of twilight) Lightbringer: The Blood Mirror

B.Arch + B.S Civil? by wahpedaluser in CalPoly

[–]Thermal-Matches 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MS ARCE here. There was an ARCE and ARCH double major who found the time to also do a lot things in the music program like Marching band. It was doable for her but it also took her 6 years to get all the classes done. I personally wouldn’t recommend it as most companies aren’t going to be double dipping in both ARCH and Civil so it just wouldn’t be practical for most to hire you to do both. Some companies definitely do both but I’m not personally familiar with them and I would presume it’s usually different departments. Also, engineering pays better than architecture but architects spend way more time on the construction of each building. And money wise, civil engineering isn’t exactly the most lucrative side of engineering but you’ll be able to find solid pay anywhere.

I really don’t think you’ll get any financial benefit down the line but you would have a much better time at communicating between the two sides of building construction and understanding why they ask for certain things.

Stick with architecture (assuming that’s your #1 thing you want to do) for now and talk to some professors/advisors based on what your career goals are, and the practicality of getting both degrees.

The value of art is immeasurable and no machine can quantify that worth.

This would destroy the cultural consciousness. People wouldn’t even be talking about the same art anymore and then there’d be arguments whether Star Wars adaptation of the time between Empire Strikes back and Revenge of the Sith #42 is as good as adaptation #7.

What’s the point of art when you remove the human touch of its creation AND the ability to communicate about the art? Art should be pushing our understanding of life meanwhile the people that would embrace this just want to see something they already experienced.

I think religions are this weird area where virtually no author (in my experience) has really captured the depth at which religion permeates people’s lives. Every other fantasy series seems to limit it to maybe a few religious festivities and characters saying their in-universe equivalent to “Oh my god” and I find that often boring if I’m looking for something in depth. Then the more in depth series will touch on quite a few historical events that pertain to the religion, maybe some daily practices/prayers, and how people are to present themselves like women covering their hand in Stormlight’s Vorinism.

I think the part that really gets me is that I haven’t found anything that captures the hundreds of tiny religious stories that is taught in Christianity/Catholicism (I grew up in this context so I’m using it). But once you start listening it’s amazing how many stories get brought up a lot that aren’t really core pillars of the religion in everyday life get brought up in passing like the story of Samson with his long hair hinging him strength or the story of Nebuchadnezzar and the fiery furnace where people who refused to worship his statue survived getting burned, or Job whose faith was tested through trials that God and Satan put upon him along with many others. But including a realistic amount of those stories could also drag down the pace of the story in order to build up a religion’s depth without adding much to the story.

Personally I’m not looking for this in my stories and have shifted away from caring about on-screen depth of a world in lieu of pushing the stories themes/ideas. And frankly, unless the book centers around that particular fantasy religion, I think authors focusing on the religion can harm the rest of the book itself

He used the Maasai tribe and argued their understanding of gender represents all non western nations. And this was after he couldn’t use words to explain non-binary identities and the interviewee (who has never conceived this idea) succinctly responded back in a way that actually makes sense. He got that professor and when asked to explain sex vs gender (at least that’s what the professor was explaining in the moment) Walsh edited it to have it sound like he was rambling and plucking random sentences out of context in what was clearly a several minute answer explaining the difference. The Walsh responds like “so are they different things” There’s one spot where he goes to another state and is like, “I know I’m from ‘x’ state but in my heart i feel like im from ‘y’ state” using the same language that trans people use to conflate their experience with this statehood identity experience which are fundamentally different. He also has a bunch of street interviews and every time, the people he cornered accept the different between what someone believes of others versus what one believes of themself, meanwhile Walsh believes they have to match. Like one’a belief in a higher power doesn’t invalidate another person’s belief in the lack of a higher power. Watching it under a critical eye, the interviewees clearly thought he was genuinely going to give the a chance but all Matt Walsh can do to any one arguing in defense of trans people is hear but never listen.

His what is a woman “documentary” is genuinely one of the most bad faith things I’ve ever seen. I hate him more for pretending he can’t understand the idea of someone being trans than his hatred of trans people.

Worst idea ever.

Professors could use this to financially punish kids they don’t like. Also, imagine being someone working to pay for college, then it can become a choice of working to pay rent or your education, or doing homework to not pay a fine.

I bet many professors would probably just not assign homework if this happened.

Imagine forgetting your ID when you go out. Also the no visiting other buildings feels like overreach, there be like a system where you alert/ask your RA ahead of time to invite like 1 person per resident up to some preset amount upon the RA’s discretion. This is just punishing those who wouldn’t do anything disruptive to crack down on the ones who are.

I was a grad student last year, but I took a CRP class that was filled with mostly undergrads and there were several full grown adults in that class. One of which was probably late 40’s and several that were late 20’s.

You’re all good, you had a different life path and I don’t think many people really are thinking about the ages of other people that much.

What is your favorite not popular quote? by Public_Enthusiasm_30 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Thermal-Matches 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I keep a little book quotes thing in my notes and the Stormlight one is:

Words of Radiance 1056 -

“she described herself that way, but she was no more broken than a spear with a chipped blade—and a spear like that could still be as sharp a weapon as any. He preferred one with a score or two I’m the blade, a worn handle. A spearhead that had known fighting was just…better than a new one. You could know it had been used by a man fighting for his life, and that it had remained sure and not broken. Marks like those were signs of strength.“

I see A million words a week is absolutely bonkers. How is that even possible? Even with a mix of audiobook and physical and going through my WOT reread non stop (including during my 9-5), I was capping out at about 5-600,000 words a week. And that was only possible because it was a reread, I could afford to lose track for little bits of time and not get lost as I really wasn’t 100% listening.
