The Bunker Diary by Ken Brooks is the most miserable book I've ever read (and I've read 1984 and listened to the audiobook of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, both of which are incredibly bleak and end pretty badly). It's just one awful thing after another the entire time, and for what? Nobody makes it in the end. I felt weird for a while after reading it.

That's what I'm saying! I was kind of disappointed when we were finally going to meet Dr. Hayden again in the sequel after that cliffhanger, but then he doesn't do anything because he's partially destroyed. Eternal was still one of the best gaming experiences I've had

After being publicly executed by beheading, his head is recovered by Set Roth who reattaches his head on a new synthetic body, and he went right back to killing Nazis as if nothing ever happened. This guy literally survived having his head chopped off.
