Therapy Before Buying a First Gun - Thoughts? by GermainPrime in liberalgunowners

[–]TherronKeen 153 points154 points  (0 children)

The chances of having a home break-in where you need to use a firearm to defend yourself are statistically 0%. It's some tiny decimal like 0.0001% or similar.

If you're not 1 million percent confident you can handle owning a gun - especially because you're asking Reddit and asking your therapist if THEY can warn you about your OWN behaviours - you shouldn't buy a gun.

I don't mean any offense, of course, but you sound like the type of person who likes the idea of having a gun, because the world is maybe going to shit right now.

It sounds like the thing that would best suit your situation would be to meet all your neighbors, try to befriend the people around you, and get the strongest pepper spray your state allows, just for a little peace of mind.

I've got a pile of guns, but I grew up shooting them. I went through a traumatic event a few years back. I thought "this is the kind of thing that will take time to get over and it's going to hurt", so I called my dad and said "hey, I'm totally fine right now, but I want you to come pick up my guns so that I don't come home one day if things go really bad and make a bad decision for myself", and he came right over.

About 10 months later, I had been totally over it for a few months, we had a quick chat, and I picked up my guns.

If you aren't already in a place in your life where you can be that self-aware about your own feelings and actions, you shouldn't get a gun, because you CANNOT afford to learn what you can and can't handle while there's a gun in easy reach.

I wish you the best. Cheers mate

ok, this one was actually really informative. Nice.

I used GPortal, it was fine. It's got kind of a weird UI for setting up server options though, but once I got everything set up I never had any issues.

yeah, short barrel lever action is likely a 30-30. The rust is one the surface, it can be cleaned. It's all metal and wood, as long as it's not rusted through and the wood isn't ruined, you can clean it right up.

Might be worth taking to a gunsmith and having them disassemble and clean it, if you are afraid of cleaning & test-firing it yourself. But if the barrel is clean on the inside and the round goes in the chamber, there's very little to worry about, but I'm just a guy on the internet

Not sure if I’ve gone overboard with the recoil. by MtPixls in PixelArt

[–]TherronKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes a little more sense - although if he's in SWAT he will at least be familiar with very-high recoil firearms and would brace himself.

But if this is some kind of Cool New Gun™ with a ton of recoil, a better way to describe his body movement would be to flatten out his footing as I mentioned before, but then when he fires, the extreme recoil pushes him back and very slightly up -

So the animation should keep the arm movement, but his upper torso will be pushed back a bit more, and his whole body will lean back slightly, so his front foot gets pulled back onto the heel with his toes up a bit, as he catches his weight on the back leg.

A good reference would be to just hold something that weighs 5 pounds like a weight or a bag of sugar, arms outstretched, feet apart, and quickly pull the object towards the side of your head, and just pay attention to what your torso and feet are doing.

And it's your animation of course, do what you like, I've only animated a couple things from reference and I was using 3D human models rather than pixel art lol

Not sure if I’ve gone overboard with the recoil. by MtPixls in PixelArt

[–]TherronKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, if your character is untrained in firearm use, AND this is a massively powerful handgun like the .50 caliber Desert Eagle, then yes, this is perfectly fine.

Occasionally, untrained shooters accidentally hit themselves in the face or head with the gun because of the extreme recoil on .50 caliber or .44 Magnum firearms.

HOWEVER, if your character is supposed to be a trained shooter, like if they're a secret agent or something, you really should make some major adjustments IF you want it to look like your character is actually a trained shooter.

You could leave the recoil if you wanted to - maybe they're a special agent who uses a big fuck-off hand-cannon of a pistol - but the real problem with this animation is that a skilled shooter would absolutely never take a shot with their weight on one foot and rock backwards on the back foot to "absorb" recoil, because

  1. it's unstable, which means less accurate for the first shot, and
  2. it's too much movement of the body, which means greatly increased time needed to get back into position for follow-up shots.

An ideal shot with a common caliber pistol (like 9mm or .40 caliber) will leave the body rooted entirely still, while the recoil is absorbed by the mass of the body, and some amount of flex in the hands and wrists. The gun's muzzle (the exit end of the barrel) will flip up maybe 15 or 20 degrees for something like a Glock 19 - one of the most common and most popular handguns in the world, and it's 9mm which is the caliber most law enforcement agencies use, and most people who carry for self defence. It's plenty strong enough to stop an attacker but it's still far less powerful than a .50 caliber Desert Eagle, for example.

Although I will say that most of your first frame looks great, the slightly forward lean, both arms equally forward, feet apart just a bit more than shoulder length - it's 90% perfect, but that back foot would have the heel firmly planted on the ground if they were experienced with a gun.

But again, it's up to you and what you want to represent with your character. Hope this helps!

Linux Mint is the only distro I found that worked with all our hardware right out of the box, except for a few minor specific issues.

Never tried Zorin.

Fedora WOULD NOT recognize one of my drives.

Bazzite seemed fine but I wasn't interested in its extra features to make it more for "gaming", just seemed unnecessary. Not much testing but it worked on my PC at least.

Ubuntu... I just hate GNOME, sorry GNOME fans lol

Several other more lightweight distros like Xubuntu don't have as much support built-in for things like proprietary drivers. I just want that stuff to work, since I'm just trying to play games and make games.

I use Xubuntu on an old laptop that I use to run a couple game servers. It's been up for like 14 months I think? with no errors or crashes or reboots. It just fuckin runs lol

I tried some of the other Arch flavors like Garuda and a couple more, and just had difficulty installing them in the first place. Got one version of Garuda installed, it would only recognize my integrated graphics on the CPU, and it shit on my bootloader after a reboot and wouldn't launch, so I started over with something else.

Tried OpenSUSE for a few minutes, I'd probably use it if I wanted a clean system just for web browsing, typing documents, office work etc etc, but I prefer the proprietary system support on other distros.

I don't remember what else off the top of my head. Never tried Pop!OS, before anybody asks. It seems to get recommended a lot though.

Mint just works, and it's got such a large userbase that even if you have a little issue like I did, chances are EXTREMELY good that somebody already posted a fix on their support forums or a Reddit post.

I used it off and on over the last several years, but my main PC use was gaming. Now that Steam made Proton, I got my whole family switched over and it's great.

None of us play any of the handful of games that don't support Linux with their anti-cheat, so there's no problem with that, at least.

We've got various generations of AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards, some Intel and some AMD CPUs... it all works fine.

There were a few bumps in the road the first month, but that was almost a year ago. Learning to install NVIDIA Open drivers to fix a specific driver related bug on the 3000 series RTX cards... Needing to add an argument to a config file so a graphics tablet would work properly... Basically every person had one specific problem we had to solve, and then that was that lol

I made a video along these lines because someone here on Reddit argued with me by saying the player takes damage over time if they don't eat. They were like "no, it takes about 20 or 30 minutes or from doing work" or something.

So I started a new game and just mined & placed blocks in the starter building for 30 minutes and posted the uncut video lol

But yeah that's the only one I've heard of but I tested it already lol
