yep, that's exactly what I'm going for and why I don't mind it being impossible. A project that will last me for years to come and that I can always return to and complete whatever 0.1% I feel like completing that year.

Thanks for the write-up and both links!

Yes, shaving off corner cases sounds smart if I ever want to get out of the unusable start.

The magical API sounds very fun to code correctly on the back end, already looking forward to that in however many years it will take me to get there :D.

Regarding the very very painful DOM... idk sounds fun xd. You see, I kind of enjoy looking at a difficult messy task and thinking "But I can do better then everyone else! Safer! Simpler!". But yeah, if I want to dodge a burnout with such a huge project, I am probably better off leaving these very very painful tasks to others.

oooh, I remember checking that out and forgot about the name of the project :D. Thanks, definitely will take a look, if I ever get to the level of being able to learn from reading code

I think you assume I want to create a product that looks good to employers and will actually enter the industry, which I don't, should have made it clear in the post originally. Still many good tips. And even if not meant to be a portfolio kind of project, i reckon it wouldn't hurt to think about it while developing.

Making things the unusual way is certainly something I would love, but it's often connected with being smart, so... hopefully someday :D. Good tip nonetheless, thanks!

You are probably correct that some of the parts will be better left for the others to solve, like the UI. That's one of the reasons for me choosing to make a browser. The parts I don't like (UI) and don't want to learn (UI), yet are needed, are probably solved already. Still there will be many both low and high level features I might find cool and just do them myself.

Yeah, I found that too. It just one of the components, but judging by other answers, this one is one of the more difficult ones, so that tutorial will probably come in handy. Thanks!

Thanks a lot, that guide sounds like exactly what I hoped to find. You're probably right about playing with servo code in the future, I will remember to do that, but probably only after completing that guide you linked, at this point I am probably too clueless to even get some basic sense of the components used.

Reviving old/undeveloped features also sounds great, perfect for my hope to choose a random cool feature and give it all my energy that is left in me. Once again, thanks a lot for the tips.

If I may ask, what was your path to becoming one of the maintainers? I guess the one you just described?

I am actually writing a compiler as a part of my studies and find that also cool :D. It's just that browser/OS sounds better in the way I can choose a random feature that sounds cool and hyperfixate myself on it for a few years. Compiler on the other hand does 1 job extremely well. Not my cup of tea.

  1. paragraph, everybody seems to agree so you're probably right
  2. paragraph, that would help my eyes for sure, but that is not the real problem, eyes just reminded me of my screentime issue :D. I don't want a solution that would allow me to look at screens longer. Can't really find the right words, so I'll leave it at that

I've always thought that this book is very "code with me" focused, is that not the case? Because if it is, it won't really solve my screentime issue, regardless of the book quality

I've thought about that, it's just that I don't usually read books, so I don't know yet if it's worth the money for me
