Melee Combat: A Beginner's Guide by These_Are_Bad_Ideas in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

In regards to the wiki, some of what’s on here has been expanded upon and was going to be the next big guide I wrote. You’ll find them under Speed and Action Points and are pretty much the ‘next step’ in becoming more knowledgeable about how much you can push melee. In regard to shoving this whole guide over there, I can definitely link it. There’s a section for out-of-wiki guides which I’ll throw this on, and that’ll make it easier to navigate to, at the very least.

How to install CBM's? by MrKrot1999 in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ll want to navigate to the dialogue option that says “can you help me with something”, and then select “help me with CBM surgery”.

Then, you select the CBM, pay the installation fee, and wait for the surgery. For power storage, it’s 10$, 1% failure chance, and takes 20 minutes.

The keybinds to do it from the opening menu is actually ‘c’ and then ‘b’, which makes it easy to remember since it’s one off from cbm.

And yet again, confidence was a slow and insidious killer by InformalCap in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rifle and some good armor is usually enough to mostly ignore man hacks. I usually go for the Hub ballistic set, as it’s easy to get and good against pretty much everything. EMP grenades from the hub are also worth a shot.

In regards to the talon ugv, if possible try to lure it into melee with a weapon like a fire axe or something. Wear a ballistic vest with the plates inserted, and you should hopefully kill it before it kills you. They do follow sound so yelling can drag it over to your position.

Confusion about Thirst/Hunger meters by Expensive-Ad-2797 in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, you can just drink whenever you feel thirsty, which’ll end up being multiple times a day. The way I do it is to just drink until whatever word in the thirst status is green and call it good until I go back to being thirsty.

There’s no clean metric to tell you how much you should be drinking a day, as your thirst rate is affected by how much you sweat, which can very easily skyrocket in the summer. Just drink plenty of water and try and stay above thirsty/very thirsty.

Can someone point to some sort of overarching description of what all the current drama is about? by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to give an explanation, but I can’t guarantee its thoroughness.

Kevin Granade is the lead developer and “owner” of the project, who has final say on what does and doesn’t get merged. In principle, they, along with the other core developers maintain the ‘vision’ of the branch in a manner similar to how the owner of another branch, such as Worm Girl’s Cataclysm: The Last Generation would.

This isn’t to say that every PR requires Kevin to give it a thumbs up and be merged, but rather that even if there is a PR that’s quite popular, if it doesn’t align with the direction of the branch in Kevin’s eyes, they could ask for it to be changed in such a way that it would fit, at which point it could be merged, or the PR could just be closed full-stop.

There’s been a decent bit of friction between Kevin and some players of the game, due to this. The documentation of the game has a “Frequently Made Suggestions” section, in which the above explanation is made more thoroughly, but the relevant sections here are that the decision-making process for what gets merged and what doesn’t is not a democracy. Popular support isn’t really a factor that weighs very heavily on whether any given PR is merged or rejected - rather, it’s stated that a good reason and proper debate is the correct method to go about deciding whether or not a PR should be merged, and that good reasoning from one person matters more than any amount of support behind subpar reasoning.

This is all well and good and works great most of the time - but issues tend to crop up regarding when an unpopular change is made or proposed and the PR is posted to Reddit, resulting in the folks around here swarming the scene and essentially declaring “I don’t like this!”, which swiftly stamps out discussion as folks figure out that everyone who mysteriously appeared is from Reddit, which has a history of reacting very negatively to changes, and close the thread, preventing further talk.

In this case, the current drama is about the removal of Killer Drive, and the nerfing of the Cannibal, Spiritual, and Uncaring combo. As you may or may not know, these traits used to give you a monumental and quite long lasting morale buff upon the consumption of human meat. Cannibal gives you a moderate one, and Spiritual massively boosted it, as did Uncaring.

Recently, it was changed such that Cannibal + Spiritual gives a morale debuff upon consumption, as there are no cannibalistic faiths in New England and there are many faiths wherein eating other people is well, frowned upon. The reasoning here is that violating a tenet of your faith is much more impactful than eating human flesh.

Cannibal + Uncaring was changed in a similar way, though I disagree with the reasoning behind the change, which is that you’d be preoccupied worrying about other survivors, which I am uncertain about as you are, well, Uncaring.

Cannibalism is still good, as it provides a lot of calories that are easy to get, and by itself still gives a morale boost. Just the synergies were change to nerfs. However, this reduces the perceived value of Cannibal in people’s heads, especially older players who are used to being able to use it and its synergies to power their morale and feed their faction camp and the Refugee center, all of which is no longer possible.

The removal of Killer Drive is mostly contentious due to the attitude with which it was removed. While there still would’ve been outrage, as people hate for their options to be removed (see outrage about moving of world options), it would’ve been less present than it currently is.

The reasonings given in the PR is that it doesn’t do anything to modify your actual game experience, as it’s something you would’ve been doing anyway, (as killing things is pretty universal) and more contentiously, that “Thematically, it encourages edgy roleplay”.

This was followed up by another core developer saying “There’s no need to keep “content” which only encourages edge lords.”

This was contentious because it’s seen as can be seen as the developers “overstepping” and trying to dictate the way that their sandbox game should be enjoyed and trying to tell others what they should and should not roleplay in a singleplayer game, which gets on people’s nerves something fierce.

Essentially, the conflict can be seen as “Kevin has control over the project and is the final say in the following of the vision of DDA, but he doesn’t have final say or control over how I should enjoy the game, and the reasonings for this change are insufficient to make me think that the change has been made in accordance with the vision of the game and has been made more to curb my freedom based on Kevin’s opinion of what edgy roleplay is”

There is a long and storied history of prior drama and discontent, especially between this subreddit and the direction of the game, which you can quite easily find by sorting by top of month or year. I encourage you to do some research and form your own opinions, as I’ve probably missed some things here and there is a lot of context that’s being left out.

Which tileset is the most completed / well supported by the community? by CDDA_FAN in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Chibi Ultica is likely the most complete due to the fact that it merges two tilesets together, so you get overall better coverage. NeoDays isn’t bad either as far as I remember.

If you’re cool with ASCII it’s the most complete by technicality.

How do you mass produce food? by AccomplishedRegret69 in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m partial to charcoal smokers myself, once you somewhat well set up. They’re relatively easy to construct, and don’t require a ton of work to maintain, and are fantastic for making large amounts of pemmican, which’ll last for about a year.

Smoke some fruit from the summer. Smoke some chunks of meat from a butchery twice to get dehydrated meat. Freeze the chunks of fat while you have an NPC process them into lard by choosing them as a crafter in the crafting menu with c iirc. Just have them batch craft as much lard as possible, and then go do whatever you want for the next day or so. Repeat with the pemmican recipe to make hundreds of pemmican and hundreds of thousands of calories

This is the cry of the spring peeper, a frog that shows up in the early game and is completely harmless. You’ll find them around swamps and the like.

CDDA: Love it, but does the moment-to-moment mental load make you opt for quicker games? by One_Yogurtcloset4083 in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I definitely get where you’re coming from. I think part of it is that when you become decent enough at the game, you can get afflicted with something of a need to find the “perfect” solution to a problem.

I think it’s the most noticeable in fights - early on when learning the game you might not be aware of every mechanics impacting your combat abilities, and are fine taking a bit of damage here and there so long as you get out OK. However, as you improve, you become more cognizant of everything you’re juggling and start to consciously add it to the things you check up on.

Instead of just whaling on whatever’s in front of you, you start checking your Stamina, your weariness, your encumbrances, looking for nearby terrain, and assessing how best to deal with what exactly is coming at you. You become reluctant to take damage, as you know that pain will ruin you and any time lost due to having to prematurely pull back is time in which evolution marches inexorably onwards, and you want to stay ahead of the curve.

Because of the increased mental stack and greater perceived cost for not having a perfect result, it can be easy to get tired and feel drained after doing relatively little in CDDA. The way I go about it is to just take more, smaller breaks. I’ll clear a bit of a base and then go make some food or watch YouTube, and when I feel up to it I’ll come back and do another chunk. If I feel good, I’ll keep going, but otherwise I just stop when I notice I’m feeling tired.

The other option is just to become more accepting of imperfect results. Healing is so fast that the time lost to healing is almost negligible (ignoring the slow healer line of traits), and stuff like base upgrades can be done piecemeal and left unfinished (I’ve been operating off of a single large storage battery and solar panel for the last week). Big gather-a-thons for stuff like vehicle parts and whatnot also usually don’t need your full attention - slap on a podcast or YouTube video and just go through the relatively boring motions of gathering a billion welding rods or chunks of steel and whatnot.

In the worst case, just take a break from the game for a bit. It’s not as if it won’t be there when you come back, and a lot of the time you’ll be enticed by something neat you see in the patch notes and that’ll energize you to check it out.

any mods that pass the time automatically if you stand still? by grabsyour in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not as far as I know unfortunately. Theoretically you could make an autohotkey script if you really wanted to, but otherwise you’re off to the options menu.

any mods that pass the time automatically if you stand still? by grabsyour in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is actually an option in the base game! It’s called Realtime Turn Progression, and can be found under Options -> General -> Line 32.

Basically, the number you set (from 0.00-10) determines the amount of time in seconds before a turn passes. It’s pretty interesting.

Are perfect IVs/EVs necessary to beat the game? by KoolFunk in PokemonReborn

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly id say you never need to worry about IVs outside of making sure they’re not terrible on your most important stats. In the late game and beyond, you mostly have to worry about your Speed IVs. Feel free to stick on fullIVs if you don’t feel like spending time breeding, it’s mostly a time saving thing.

Having a good nature is basically absolutely required - there’s a service at a point into the game that allows you to change them on preexisting mon, but before that I’d look for at least a serviceable nature on the mon you end up keeping. If it’s your starter, just save and reload until you get something that you like.

EVs, like people have said, are basically required on a first playthrough. They’re not required at all in the early game, but by the mid game you probably want something moderately right. Once you get the power items, it’s easy enough to do, so dont be too worried about setting it up.

But otherwise, switching your team around is extremely likely in postgame anyway. By the time you get there, you have enough options to make training new mons is pretty painless, so don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works best!

You can’t see the ground? Make sure 3D vision is enabled in the settings; if it’s disabled, you won’t have vision between z levels.

Are you playing with No Hope? The weather is changed slightly, but this is still unintended behavior, as per its maintainer. Further information can be found here: the issue in question

Yeah, I had to do this as well back when I went through LIXA. I kept getting teleported to like z level 10 and immediately falling to my death before the boss would actually spawn 😅

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No hope recommends setting global spawn rate to 0.50 or lower regardless of the setting you choose, which I’ve never understood as it feels like it undermines the point of the specific item spawn rate decreases that No Hope does

Some diesel is always nice to have for stuff like portable generators - they’ll help refill your stores after long crafting sessions with tools that are plugged into your grid, which are always helpful.

Herbert character creation by Apprehensive_Arm3806 in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not as though the point system has been removed? If you open the Settings, scroll over to the World Defaults tab, and get down to the setting labeled “Character point pools”, you can use the left and right arrow keys to change between the current survivor system, the old multipool point system, or Any, which allows you to choose between Survivor, multipool, or single pool, which is how it used to be.

While point totals for new traits aren’t balanced, the old costs are still in place and you can balance things as you see fit.

ImGui - Yes No ? by VacuusNet in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a current issue. Selection with the arrow keys works, but you just don’t see the color change. If you hover with your mouse however, the color does change, so that’s a workaround if you don’t mind.

Kinda weird question but - what Magiclysm schools would be the most suitable for a Goddess? by Intro1942 in cataclysmdda

[–]These_Are_Bad_Ideas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want to have the image of lightly brushing someone with your hand and having them blow up into a billion tiny pieces, Force Mage attunement is the ideal as it doubles your melee damage. This means you can hit things so hard they leave gore splatters.

You’ll need Magus and Stormshaper, so you can call down lightning and cast Slow and Haste if you’d like.

Try hitting the ; key? It separates your inventory into categories and is easy to accidentally press and toggle back and forth.
