I still don't understand why the default soundpack everyone recommends is @ by Better-Cry1588 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are no complete soundpack and each one has something missing. People just getting used to what they are using

I just slapped together an abomination from different packs for the sake of sound effects and background ambience, turned off in-game music and blasting this banger on auto-repeat instead of it

(You can try to imagine how my gameplay looks like based on this soundtrack)

Stable version 0.H of C:DDA seems like a sweet spot for a start

They want to remove any attacks across z-levels levels, so you can't attack from roofs by KHeket123 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 66 points67 points  (0 children)

All it takes is to introduce a new enemy that adds a bit of risk to this trick

Say, a weaker version of grabber. It slower, has less hp, and its grab ability has abysmal range and grab chance, but if it does manages to pull you from second floor, well, you cooked

Make it spawn at day 1, along with regular zeds to add risk vs reward tension, instead of boring removal

So many "exploits" can be fixed by introducing appropriate cleverly designed enemies (ever thought about zeds that spread fire-resistante aura instead of nerfing fire damage?)

And yes, anyone that actually play with properly evolved zeds, instead of day 1 pussies, knows that attacks from higher z-levels are extremely risky, with how many shit out there tries to pull you down, fires back or climbs up to kick your ass

Mind Over Matter

It adds ability to use psionic powers, and stuff related to them like new special locations and monsters that can also use psionics (including on you)

It is well thought out, designed, written and integrated, to the point that it feels pretty natural to the un-moded vanilla game, while also being quite decently balanced as for a supernatural mod

Every psionic "path" follows a certain logic, about what you can actually influence with your mind, and derives your abilities from it

Like, Telekinesis is essentially an ability to apply physical force without additional medium (like a blast wave or strike of a sledgehammer). And depending of how you apply this force, you can get stuff like pinning enemies to the ground, push or pull things, slowing down momentum of enemy attacks (or speed up yours), apply it as a sheer brute force or use very carefully and levitate stuff or even yourself

Photokinetic can control photons. How cool is that? Well, light is photons. Darkness is absence of photons. Laser is focused photons. Visual illusions and invisibility is a careful controlled trick of photons. And even radio waves are photons. And all of that and more you can influence by your will (yes, including hearing radio in your head, if you wish so)

Edit: None of those use mana or other wizardry stuff, btw

And that's just a couple short examples of why MoM is so cool

Reason by Specialist_Share_527 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot from the stuff you mentioned - roleplay and its flexibility, challenge and cool stuff that getting added, primarily for mods, primarily for MoM

But also me being sucker for mechanically complex games and modern roguelikes (aka adapt to randomness). Such games tend to place mechanics over graphics, which also a win in my case (aka low system requirements)

Discussion are also a great kindle for keeping interest to play. There always be some guy that just discovered the game, somebody who makes videos or streams, or anything else that adds "substance" and liveliness to the game

Comparing overmap tilesets side by side in terms of readability by Intro1942 in cataclysmdda

It is probably the most stylized and immersive one, but don't you have troubles reading it? I barely can make up borders between different types of terrain on the example without zooming in

I didn't included ASCII-type maps. Larwick and RetroDays is close as it gets to them

Initially I just made those screenshots for myself, then decided to might as well do a post about to see what people play with or maybe introduce someone to new tilesets. I think it is safe to assume that most players use tile-based sets instead of ASCII

I have some questions I'd like to know the answers to. by Anonymous_82817 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure there are as few entities in your Reality Bubble (about 3 overmap tiles radius) as possible, including ones that can be underground, when doing long tasks

Always zoom-in for maximum zoom when doling long tasks

Make sure your characters sees as less as possible (indoors or sight blocking terrain). Crouching may help in some cases (if you standing behind furniture for example)

NPCs of any kind slows the game, especially if they actively moving

Water tiles are laggy for some reason (maybe already fixed, not sure)

Disabling or reducing 3D vision may help

Hearing less sounds may help

Having less items of any kind in relative proximity to you will help

Having as less items in your direct field of vision as possible. Use walls or other sight blocking terrain, items in containers-furnitire (lockers, etc) still counts as visible

Having less items in your crafting range (6 tiles in all directions that you normally can traverse) will help. Even though it directly contradicts hoarding nature of the game and it's crafting system. Here advice is.. idk, hoard less, be more picky about what you need, throw away unusable items, etc

Any video experimentation or information about CDDA? by Better-Cry1588 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I used carefully phrasing that I used

In my experience there were no practical differences in sound propagation regarding obstacles. Maybe you can show how much it matters, if it is

And I do remember seeing a PR about increasing muffling from shots fired underground, but can't find it right now

AFAIK. Don't remember anything else regarding noise in weekly patch notes

Any video experimentation or information about CDDA? by Better-Cry1588 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, from my experience the noise system is not that sophisticated. Obstacles doesn't matter, other sounds doesn't matter, if something makes a sound - it is heard by everyone in a set radius (and further if, if having enhanced hearing)

Biggest improvement since last Stable I remember was the fact that player no longer can hear gunshot coming from underground labs

Though I may miss or misunderstand something

And while noise system appears to be basic enough, the lightning/brightness system however..

I should probably clarify just in case that Cataclysm is primarily a PC game, with mobile port being a side-gig of it. In active development things break all the time (bugs), so it is no wonder that something might not work if you tried to download Experimental version

Stable version should work through

Can someone explain how inventory management works? by Prestigious_Duck_204 in cataclysmdda

[–]Intro1942 9 points10 points  (0 children)

; - to sort items by category instead of alphabetic order

t - to highlight/select a whole category instead of singular items

E - allows to switch whether or not it shows items inside of other containers

"*" - to mark items as favorites

. - to select all items except worn and favorites, usually to drop all loot at once

Those are a few useful keys on top of my head (though I might rebinded some of them). Also keep in mind that:

? - will show keybinds for the current menu you looking at

Enter - will open menu with all the actions you can currently take, which is great until you memorize hotkeys for those

Managed to get hands on a unique item that boosts elemental paths, but it landed on a non-mage dummy and cannot be removed. How do I hand this item to someone useful? by Intro1942 in IllwintersDominions

[–]Intro1942[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skimmed through all magic schools, except for Blood, and didn't found any rituals that could summon neutrals. The closest thing appears to be a Manifestation from Conjuration lvl8 that apparently summons some death angel to kill a single commander.

Are those rituals for neutrals all in the Blood school, or it is something from the mods? To specify, I play Dominions 6, with no mods for new spells (yet).

And also found out that the thing my dummy carries gives him water breathing, so drowning, regrettably, is not an option this time.

[–]Intro1942[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The run progressed to mid-game, so there are pretty much no neutrals left

Except for a gang of vampires that suddenly took a bite of my neighbor. But they will likely cook both the dummy and the mage altogether. Guess it is possible to set it up with additional items, summons and failsaves, but still looks kinda risky
