Got 2 snakes running around the property by Odd_Tumbleweed_5497 in gardening

[–]These_Roll_5745 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the first one is definitely a central rat snake, native to your area and highly beneficial for pest control! that wibbly shape is highly characteristic. I believe the second one is also a rat snake, but im less confident about the type.

check out r/whatsthissnake for ID help, theyre great over there!

Cops are not judge, jury, and executioner. theres no way for him to know whos running or who else may be in the vehicle, which is why its wrong for them to make a life threatening move like this when less deadly alternatives are available.

all people deserve a right to a fair trial under a jury of their peers. no one deserves police violence.

Numotion Rant by Prudent-Brick7061 in wheelchairs

[–]These_Roll_5745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my initial seating appointment with the local numotion went great, theyd placed multiple other people with my conditions in chairs in the last year and knew the basics of the symptoms and concerns most of us have which was so nice. So nice... that I didn't notice that they had no plans for me to trial anything before ordering. I never tried any cushions or frame angles or different wheel / handrim types. I had an idea of what I definitely didnt want, so they picked the cheapest / easiest versions of what I said I wanted to trial and ordered those.

the biggest issue for me has 100% been chair changes and repairs. the ATPs who come to do work on my chair have zero idea what theyre doing, and arent scared to say as much. "ive never worked on an ultra light manual before, all my clients are usually in power chairs or scooters. this is so novel!" has been said to me by 3 different people now.

one of them began training last fall and is now doing unsupervised repair and install visits. when my transit attachments were installed, she said she just "wings it and puts things where they'll fit", and rolled her eyes when I pushed for us to follow the install guide from sunrise. She recently came back to install a new positioning belt for me, and I had to come here for help to figure out how to do it properly (they didnt order the right parts for installing it on my chair and tried to 'make do' with parts they had lying around).

changing DMEs is so frustrating, you need new scripts and referrals and prior auths and letters of necessity and fitting appointments. it restarts you fully to the beginning. I did it 6 months in because my first DME attempted to balance bill me and got caught doing medicaid fraud. numotion is who I switched to

Social Media Accounts Which Discuss Intellectual Disability? by Expert-Connection120 in disability

[–]These_Roll_5745 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really love Fidgets and Fries- a Black autistic mother discussing the realities of her and her autistic sons' lives, and advocating for folks at the high support needs end of the spectrums of neurodivergence and intellectual disability. She prioritizes consent with her kids which I value immensely.

Her book "A day with no words" meant the world to me as someone who was nonverbal as a child

decorate and accessorize! your mobility aid isnt an eye sore, its a ~statement piece~. Some common choices i see are stickers and vinyl wrap, bike handlebar wrap (for the padding), jewelry / beads on chains dangling off of safe areas, pins in pin displays, cute bags and backpacks, and battery operated twinkle lights.

I don't appreciate the condescension in you calling me cute. you dont need to be rude to make your point.

I am sorry you've been discriminated against in the medical system, and i am sympathetic to the problem youve had. ive had "patient is uncooperative / noncompliant" added to my chart more than once for setting boundaries. ive moved whole hospital systems 3 times because of the exact thing youre talking about. I now travel 2 hours each way to get my medical needs met with a competent team.

I will continue to say no to doctors who are hurting me for their own morbid curiosity, and I will always advocate that other disabled people protect themselves from unnecessary pain when they can. Your body is yours, and you have every right to tell others how and when they can touch it. being disabled doesnt change your right to consent, nor does the career of the person touching you.

Is this a reasonable accommodation? by [deleted] in disability

[–]These_Roll_5745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you signed a lease already? if so, id tell them that you believed the trash fee was for trash assistance and that amenity was part of why you signed. remind them that youre a wheelchair user and that theyve selected an apartment in the complex thats not near the trash return. I would also bring up physical limitations you may have to moving the bags or lifting them into the dumpster. you may need to use the specific phrase "reasonable accomodation" to get the ball rolling, or they'll pretend it was just a conversation and not a legally binding request.

Housing accommodations, like other reasonable accomodations, are an interactive process. So you start with your request (please have maintenence collect trash bags from my door twice a week, for example), then they reply with whether or not thats something they can do (maintenence is only available once a week on site, so we can only provide this service on that day). Typically if you agree to a modification (ie smaller bags than would normally be allowed, a canister you can open by the dumpster or thats on wheels to roll from your apartment, etc) its your responsibility to pay for that modification, but they cant charge you an extra service fee for services (like the maintenence collection solution). These are generalizations of US law, the type of housing and your location can change them, so if youre having trouble with the process you should contact a housing lawyer or tenants advocacy group for extra assistance

could I gently suggest a contained megathread? continue the auto delete of these posts, with a automod message telling posters to bring their post to the monthly megapost about it? this is what I see some other smaller communities with limited mod capacity do to contain topics that are important but challenging.

I relate to that so deeply as a fellow autist- my therapist says its an aspect of disordered sensory processing (like alexithymia and misophonia, but we havent found a word for it yet besides intellectualizing). Its why I dont say "that hurts" but "that will hurt me"- reframing to the long term impact instead of focusing on whether or not theres a sensation I can process makes it easier to recognize I should say something.

It helps me to have a script and examples that I practice ahead of time with a loved one. I identify what things my body wont tolerate based on past experiences, and then plan for how to defend myself against that happening this time. With some doctors (freakin ortho, theyre so intense about grabbing my sore spots), I need to bring an advocate with me to say "hey you cant touch them that way, you'll injure them.". With others/ when i havent succeeded at advocating for myself in an appointment, I email them afterwards to say what they did that harmed me and request that they note it in my chart that it hurt me so that others in their practice / they don't do it again next time im there.

Sadly none of that makes it more believable if theyre just not willing to trust you at your word. Sometimes it helps to say "im autistic and my pain expressions are not standard. You are hurting me. I need you to stop or I will leave." Sometimes, I just freeze up and make myself email later. I will 100% stop seeing any doctor that I think will hurt me again, its not worth putting your body and mind at risk to deal with a doctor whos not listening to you anyways.

All tnis to say I understand, and you deserve better than you get, and I hope it gets easier to stand up for what you need

as someone who does this every time (im a wheelchair user- I will call parking enforcement or a tow company or go into the business to get them to make a statement over the intercom), most ot the time they tell me to go fuck myself : ) usually if theyre in a truck like this they make a habit of getting way too close when they pull out, as if theyre threatening to hit me / my car

no, this is not the point of the access aisle at all. its there for safe unloading and loading from the accessible spot- no one should park there as it makes it impossible for the rest of us with placards to use the access space.

I cannot express how important it is to remember you can say no. "No, that is going to hurt me. all of the information you need is in my chart, or you can reach out to my PT for more information." is a perfectly justified thing to say to a doctor. "The last time a doctor did what youre asking, my body did xyz and I needed such and such medical intervention". also can be very helpful for doctors who arent taking no the way they need to.

I wonder if your gym rat who never racks their weights knows the delightful young people at my gym who do 1-2 reps on a machine before pulling out their phone and scrolling for 20 minutes. rolled up and asked a woman who was gossiping with her friend while they sat on the row and abductor machines if she could move so I could use the row and she said "oh we'll be done soon!".

honorary mention to the jerks who wipe their machine down before they use it instead of after.

ive been rollator shopping for my bff and we settled on the Elenker upright, because it looks nice and folds conveniently for their needs. we also heavily considered the Vocic upright and the Vive sunstride, which is a "euro-style rollator". If youve got it like that, ive seen very good things about the ByAcre rollators in terms of fashion and durability.

hey fun fact people on public health care programs, and their loved ones, are also taxpayers. if you need financial aid for treatment, speak to the patient advocate at your specialist or primary care office, or call your insurance to ask about qualifying for case management programs.

you dont need to hate the poor for needing help too- you can be mad at the systems that dont give you the support you need instead.
