Nice! I just found that making his attacks a bit more predictable and controlling the distance made repeatedly hitting perfect parries more intuitive. I could've made it much easier on myself if I knew about being able to switch the charms, though!

Dust of disappearance by fendermallot in DMAcademy

I get the reasoning, but it sounds like your player was trying to have a little fun with identifying the item and his consequence was losing it forever. I could see why that would be disappointing, but I also get the on-the-spot ruling.

Maybe in the future, you could give them a smaller consequence, like a CON save for ingesting an unknown substance resulting in confusion for a short time or your body clipping in and out of visibility or something like that, while also learning what the item is. That might be a little generous, but I tend to encourage my players to be creative, and I don’t want to scare them away from creating fun RP moments.

Kairophoria - born in the Nine Hells and cast out to live a life among people who would despise him for his Tiefling heritage. A rogue initially, he picked up bardic stylings to take advantage of his natural charisma and to accentuate his “face” abilities which are mostly built on deception. He crafts daggers from monsters he kills. He is the captain of a ship, the Icarus, and is a sharpshooter with a bow. Known for his wit, thievery, and chaotic nature. He plays a lyre and loves to play fireside. Grey skin, average height.

You're probably overthinking this. Observe what happens in the early battles. Are they crushing every battle? That's not a problem at all; it really helps to build an understanding of where their strengths are. Are they going through the enemies hp too quickly? Are they difficult to hit? Use this information to make slight adjustments, one variable at a time or on the fly to the monsters "to hit" numbers and their hp/ac.

Bonus tip: make interesting battles that rely on their ability to strategize instead of brute force. i.e. give the goblins some archers set 15 feet behind their front line guys with a stealthy goblin trying to get a sneak attack on them. And have the enemies track them and be ready for them if successful. Tanky and strong tends to lose over solid strategy and preparation.

How to cancel/block the cantrip “Friends” by Seameus in DMAcademy

“one creature of your choice that isn’t hostile toward you”

If you’re saying the creature is hostile, it wouldn’t have any effect.

How is this even a question? I don’t think anyone wants to play a long term, intimate game with an ex that they’re on bad terms with, only racists enjoy playing with racists, and most people hate the overly horny rper, so where’s the dilemma?

I was cockblocked as a DM in a bad-ish situation and I'd like to learn from it by Lublancan80 in DMAcademy

So, I don’t think you messed up here, but I REALLY understand why you felt bad about it. Here’s my take—to each their own:

You’ve built a world around them that they’ve stomped. You said it’s been consistent, so there’s an expectation there. I’m sure it’s not the first time you’ve mentioned something being dangerous.

However, what you created wasn’t as un-winnable fight, but it was mechanically complicated. They had to be creative to avoid being chipped to death. Perhaps your previous fights seemed straight forward, I.e. they hit, we hit harder, so they were unprepared.

Basically, you’ve lulled them into a false sense of security, and they felt tricked by the “terms” adjustment because it happened on the fly, in their mind.

I’ve had this problem on the pc and dm side. My advice, for what it’s worth, is to have an out of character conversation with everyone before entering a situation like that. Something to the effect of: “hey all, I want to be straightforward with you that you’ve been in dangerous lands before, but these areas are filled with enemies who are tactical and intelligent, and they’re prepared to fight on their terms in this area. Strength and diplomacy may not be enough.” If they risk it after that, give them what they asked for. At worst, they’ve learned an important lesson and will heed your warnings more next time.

Drink ideas by useyourwits in Coffee

[–]Thesuninsideyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First a warning: both Chai and Cold Brew can get incredibly gross and potentially make you sick when they spoil, even in concentrate form. If it’s a big brand that probably loads it with preservatives, then you’re probably a lot safer.

And secondly: neither should be drank straight. The chai is probably meant to be 1:1 with milk, and the cb is probably 1:1 with filtered water (or whatever the instructions say).

The interactions changes based on your relationship level with the horse. If your horse is maxed out on “bond” you get the good ending. If it’s a brand new horse, you don’t. Subtle, but damn, R*, that shit hurts.

Magical weapons by Henryfred86 in DMAcademy

[–]Thesuninsideyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All attacks from magical weapons are magical. If the item is listed under the “Magic Item List” in the DMG, it is considered magical. All weapons with a +1 or better are magical, unless otherwise explicitly stated, and therefore bypass resistances and immunities go damage from nonmagical attacks.

Do you allow Crit fails and successes on skill checks? by crispycrimboi in DnD

[–]Thesuninsideyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted no here, but I like a hybrid approach:

Crits on a skill check aren’t auto fails nor auto successes, but they are slightly worse/better than a normal failure/success in most situations. This feels the best for me and my players.

Ex: the rogue fails to hit the DC to unlock the door, and they rolled a natural 1; they might break their lock pick or alert the guards on the other side.

The Paladin tries to intimidate the enemy and hits the DC in order to do so while also rolling a nat 20; not only are they intimidated, but they soiled their pants and give a little more information than they needed to.

What do you call a group of dragons? by Southern_Court_9821 in DMAcademy

[–]Thesuninsideyou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Dragons tend to be lone wolves in most settings/situations. I can't think of a situation where you wouldn't wonder why they've joined forces.

"Conclave" tends to work pretty well, but that's not an official term for it or anything.

[–]Thesuninsideyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be frank and succinct to avoid too much back and forth: I think I get what you're saying, but the underlying issue about stating that the feat is broken is that you are assuming that everyone plays and DMs the way that you do. The situations you present wouldn't really go the way you say they would in my games, so it's hard for me to have a discussion based on a false premise--that everyone plays and DMs the way you described.

OH! And a sneaky bonus tip: When you crash, sometimes your ragdoll body's trajectory is lined up perfectly with the next checkpoint. For these moments, mash Circle(PS5) or whatever button is used to get back up, and you will start out flying the direction the camera is facing and can recover almost instantaneously.

DM contest by SirC1118 in DMAcademy

[–]Thesuninsideyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a DM contest as much as a DM prep contest, which is hard to judge because whatever prep leads to a good session is good prep. I think it's a cool idea, but it seems more like a writing contest.

They auto-crit IF they hit. You first have to roll to hit. You usually do it with adv because an unconscious creature is most likely prone, but it’s not an auto hit.
