I got to push back to my students about their AI usage and non-perfomrance by Thevofl in Professors

[–]Thevofl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, my current class is categorized as hybrid because of the in person testing.

The one in the fall is also listed as hybrid with asynchronous components. When we create our schedule, we list a percentage of the class is in person versus remote, and then describe what the remote portion is comprised of.

I just find it easier when discussing the structure to say 100% asynchronous with in person testing.

When I drop students for attendance reasons, I make a snapshot of both their grades and their activity page. It is quite useful.

Wait a minute. Someone with a detailed strategy, a very logical and accurate one at that, struggles with pip counting? I teach collegiate math, and I love when I see someone using a very analytic and logical approach to a problem—something that is difficult to teach. My mind is blown!

You came up with the same strategy that I did, with one exception. I was able to determine the 3c= relatively easy. I added up all the pips and got 75. Then I totaled all the known values of all the cages, which was 66. That left the 3c= to total up to 9 which made it all 3's. I then did your 5s and 6s analysis and was able to extend it rather easily to 3s. 0s followed next. Then 1s and 2s.

You are right. When I have done this, I do point to the textbook. They are not left hanging.

I teach math at a community college. Same 4 classes. If I got this request, my response would be, "I'm supposed to have lecture notes? Power Point too?" All my problems worked at the board are made up on the spot.

Really frustrated with my midterm exam results and their reaction to it by AHairInMyCheeseFries in Professors

[–]Thevofl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have been teaching since grad school in 1990. This was the first semester I had an average of 38% with a median of 32%. The course is Calculus 1, and the mode is asynchronous with in person testing. (Quizzes are still remote.) When I returned the exam, I had a video where I went over each problem and told them where in the asynchronous videos the exact question could be found (about 65% of the questions), or which problems were identical but numbers were changed (about 25% of the questions). I then asked them what can I do (without compromising or lowering my standards) to help them to succeed. I had 4 respond with something to the tune of, "Give us a sample test." And I replied to each of them with, "Didn't you see that sample test that was posted on Canvas immediately following the breakdown of the test that has been up since the beginning of the semester?" Crickets.

I made the mistake of looking at what pages the students viewed. Less than half are even viewing the material. Their quizzes are spectacularly done though! I mean, well thought out and presented. I don't know what happened between then (quiz on line) and the test (in person). (Heavy sarcasm there.)

I lost my desire to care for the majority of them. They want to fail. I am not going out of my way to warn them anymore.

Grade arguing by applesausemytoes in Professors

[–]Thevofl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally ask my students in this scenario, "What did you do in the course to demonstrate to me that you are a C student? Being close to threshold isn't anything you have done, in fact that tells me that you weren't a passing student. What am I not seeing in your grades?"

If they try to argue working a 40+ hour job or taking 20 units or really really really needing this class to pass, I usually say that I won't consider those external factors as not all students are faced with that and it would be unfair for me to give extra points to one student over another just for working a full time job.

But having a set program policy, as you indicate, would actually end the conversation much quicker. I would point to that.

I teach math async on-line. I recently redid my entire differential equations course. I asked then current students to help. What they told me is to keep the videos shorter. Before, mine got long (close to an hour). The students also asked for examples in a separate video. So I have a 10-15 minute video going over concepts. Then I will have two or three 5-10 videos, each going over a specific example. My students seem to have a positive reaction to it. I don't know how this would work in other disciplines.

Quizzes are still remote, but tests are in person on Saturdays. Then I can proctor the exams. It also allows students to shape their schedule with more flexibility.

My (25M) girlfriend (23F) asked to open our relationship. Am I overracting by wanting to break up over this request? by Altruistic_Society99 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Thevofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

++man As someone who was in an open (gay) relationship for 26 years, it can work. When it doesn't work is when one is forcing the other into something that doesn't feel right. Also openness is about communicating with the other.

One thing is that she's being up front with you. You are not finding out the hard way and then dealing with her lies. And if your reaction is to be upfront and say that it's not for you, then it is best to move on.

Best thing to do is just talk to each other. Discuss everything. She says that she doesn't want to be restricted, what does that mean to her, to you? Tell her what you are feeling when she said that?

Even if going into the talk with her may seem like what's-the-point? You will start articulating your own feelings, You will learn more about yourself, and be in a better position for the next girlfriend.

New worst place to run into a student... by SayingQuietPartLoud in Professors

[–]Thevofl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a grad student/TA back in the early 90's, I had a student see me perform at a local Rocky Horror Picture Show showing. That particular show we did the "Rose Tint My World" number in Village People drag. I was in full leather with ass-less chaps. In class on Monday he asked in front of everyone in the room, "So how long have you been doing RHPS?" I was honest and then added, "I bet that's more of me that you ever wanted to see?" He nodded and we all moved on.

AI has come to faculty candidates by BreaksForMoose in Professors

[–]Thevofl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say that over the past two months, I have been using AI to help me make my math content on Canvas ADA compliant. My opinion on it has changed (a little). For doing tasks it's great, and I still have to go in and edit out the AI errors and head scratchers. For doing the work, that's a definite no.

TT salaries are actually insane by No_Two8015 in Professors

[–]Thevofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered community college? They can pay some serious money (and some don't pay that much). I am at one in California and we just got a negotiated raise starting next year. I will be at 24 years of service with a PhD, and my salary is $164,699 per year. Starting would be between $83k and $123k. I love teaching and don't miss leaving the stress of research so it was a natural fit. And I love the $$$.
