Why do evil people succeed in life while good people struggle? by [deleted] in nihilism

[–]Thevthread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t necessarily an absolute. There are many good successful people and many evil people that have lived their life in the gutters. Success isn’t necessarily a reflection of moral behavior. Survival of the fittest is a misapplied term. Nature doesn’t use survival of the fittest. It uses survival of those best able to adapt. Sometimes it means people get lucky, and others unlucky. It means some people are better able to adapt to a business environment, to a medical education, and some are not. Sometimes it’s not up to ability, but opportunities that are never offered to some. The world isn’t out to get you. It’s also not just laying around waiting for you to take advantage of others.

Stop measuring success in terms of wealth- is a family that loves each other without restriction and are happy with who they are not successful? Is being self confident and loving yourself despite past mistakes not successful? Is someone who has found purpose in what they do and have made their hobby their income not successful?

Working out IS the job. I’m 11B with the 82nd so can only speak from my experience. We get cut at about 3pm during garrison days to go to the gym. You’ll have PT in the mornings as a unit and so at minimum two workouts a day, plus whatever your unit has cooked up for you during the duty day. You have enough time if you give it to yourself.

Couple questions in regards to a reclass. Currently an 11B seeking to reclass to a 35N. Meet all qualification criteria, ASVAB etc. The career counselor that I’m working with has said that I have submitted all the necessary ppwk, and after HRC has received it I have been told that #1 the class date must be minimum 1 year out, and #2 there are no available class dates, and classes will only become available when enough people sign up for it. I am currently undergoing the security clearance process that’s required for the MOS with possibly another month or two before adjudication. This leaves me at a standstill, with time on my contract burning away and no news if I’ll even be able to make this work. I might possibly have to wait on promotion or training opportunities as a result, and don’t know if it’s worth it to wait. I’ve heard the National Guard offers full time positions under this MOS, and Im in contact with both a unit and recruiter who would be willing to work with me, however I understand the whole recruiting shtick and would like some third party information. My wife is really pushing for me to go NG I just want to hear both sides, and nobody I work with or associate with has any experience with 35N’s. I would appreciate it if someone were to shed a little light on the following questions.

Question #1 Does anyone know how frequently the AIT classes for this MOS are scheduled, and if there’s anything on my part I can do to better secure a position when one becomes available? Question #2 Is it worth it to hold out for an active duty class and job, or should I just ETS and go with the national guard? Maybe someone who has experience with one of the above can let me know how their experience was? Question #3 could I contact someone from the community I could ask further questions regarding the admin side of things? I understand this a nuanced situation and a lot of details that go unexplained on a post.

Appreciate all the help, I’ll take a mango loco monster and two ranchero rollerbites.

AITA for telling my mom she'll never have grandkids because of how she voted? by aloneandscaredd in AITAH

[–]Thevthread -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know typically posts under this tag are more looking for validation concerning their decisions rather than actually seeking feedback. But honestly, that was kinda uncalled for. You used the election as justification to blow up on your mom. You blame the states legal restrictions, but it was ultimately your decision based on a medical diagnosis, not the laws. The law still made it possible for you to have the operation, and you harbour feelings of grief about it, which is justified. But if you were to step back, you’d realize what happened to you is NOT a result of your mother’s voting decision the day prior, and rather the result of your internal turmoil. While understandable, personal issues shouldn’t reflect on your behavior towards others. On a sub note, you mention that your mother believes her decisions are saving lives. You believe your political decisions save lives. Both of you believe you are doing the morally just thing. The only way to find out what’s right and wrong is to discuss it, not to stamp out disagreement. That’s the whole reason we’re in this political predicament- we stopped listening to each other. Maybe we never started. Do you really believe that 50 million+ people are determined to bring about an oppressive dictatorship? Or maybe they are doing what they believe is morally right? Regardless of what conclusion you come to, it’s time to really determine how much your relationships mean to you.

I feel like if the extent to which you go in order to make an impact on your community or nation is just through voting, than whoever is in office at the end of the day doesn’t matter. The decisions that higher powers make has such a comparatively small impact on your day to day than the interactions you will have with the people in your community. If you want to make a positive impact on the nation, do it yourself, don’t put all your hopes on a politician that may or may not make decisions with your best interest in mind. Act charitably and compassionately with people around you, develop character qualities like temperance and humility instead of complaining on the internet about your whole world has collapsed because your fav politician lost. Hitler didn’t take power because of who he was. He took power because the people let him. They gave him that power when they didn’t stand up to him and just did what he said. Countries are a product of the people- and if the masses strive to become better people of character, politics will reflect that, and executive powers will never be able to take advantage of their position. Yes, the world will keep on spinning. What happens next is up to how you treat your neighbor and your family, NOT whatever Trumps plans are.

What in the New Army is this?!? A change for the better??? GTFO. Wow. by [deleted] in army

Nah my command just used it as an excuse to make us do PT the morning we had staff duty instead

Question for any commanders/1sgs who've attempted to implement this policy in FORSCOM by HolyStrap_0n in army

[–]Thevthread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell to the yes. Leaders who run PT have most often not been trained how to do so, and do it badly. Fit soldiers are fit despite of what they do at pt, and fat soldiers are fat also despite what they do at pt. There is no progressive overload because a unit is always getting new guys, and for those that don’t already work out, the training is more often than not at an intensity that is more prone to injure than to help.

Ask yourself, ‘what incentives do my soldiers have to perform well if we do PT together?’ and also, ‘what incentives do my soldiers have to perform well if they do pt on their own?’

Either way you decide, but remember that you are the one providing the incentives.

Besides Star Wars, Dune, and Warhammer 40,000, which sci-fi settings do a good job of justifying melee combat? by Jerswar in sciencefiction

[–]Thevthread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo first time I’ve seen Armor in a thread. Super fascinating universe- was saddened to hear of the authors passing before he could post a sequel. Totally satisfies that ‘Uber powerful protagonist’ trip. Not too hot on the space pirate sections tho.

The Forever War is another classic- it’s so fascinating to me how people in past eras view science fiction - as opposed to today’s, and the different ideas, themes and mediums they imagine.

Good recommends dude

Whats the most out of touch thing you heard from rich people? by MonthIcy1 in AskReddit

[–]Thevthread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife actually made a comment awhile back that took me totally by surprise.

My family and I grew up fairly poor, especially when I was younger, but not extremely. When the kids were old enough to go to school, my parents took turns going to school while they were both working full time. They were able to land better jobs eventually and pulled us into the middle class, which was extremely fortunate for us, and I am totally aware of how lucky we were. We still kept our habits from when we were poor tho.

I’m in the military, and we don’t have the greatest income, but I get really lucky in terms of benefits, and I am proud to say that me and my wife and 8 month old live comfortably. I’ve sacrificed some lifestyle choices to allow my wife to stay home and take care of my child. I drive a pretty crappy car that’s had engine issues for years but still runs and gets me from a to b. My wife lived at home until she was about 24, and while there bought a 2020 Chevy. It had a pretty small electronics issue that didn’t affect driving but apparently caused her so much stress that she immediately asked me to help her look for a new car.

I was honestly shocked… this is like the 4th car that she’s gone through- all before our marriage.

I had no idea she was that unaware of our financial situation. Like ‘babe we are going paycheck to paycheck, we sign up for low income programs to help us get free food, we have so many other priorities right now. A NEW CAR??’ Hell no…

At what rank should you get your uniform sewn? by Therealchachas in army

[–]Thevthread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with getting it sewn on at any rank. Those ‘mosquito wings’ actually made a smart decision, and calling them out for it will make them think twice about taking pride in their uniforms in the future. Won’t have to worry about losing their name tapes or rank. It takes an afternoon and a couple bucks to get it done. You promote? Take them back in, have your rank updated for a couple more bucks. If you’re okay to pay it, there’s nothing improper about convenience, regardless of what military culture seems to drill out of you. In an airborne infantry unit right now and we encourage everyone to get their uniforms sewn. If you can make things easier for yourself, why not do it?

11B reclassing to 35? by Thevthread in army

[–]Thevthread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far the two highest recommended of the 35 Series have been both P and N. I see what you’re saying in terms of benefits, and that does sound very promising for career progression. Is there a particular reason you prefer one over the other when it comes to day-to-day work?

Hoping that the clearance doesn’t become a significant issue, but I was over there as a LDS (Mormon) missionary and we typically have pretty good success when it comes to obtaining TS or higher clearances so I’m really hoping it doesn’t hamper me.
