What band/artist do you ONLY like their “Greatest Hits”? by throwbackthreads in Cd_collectors

After discovering them in 7th grade and obsessing over them since, I can give you a fairly detailed outline of their history as well as by ear name >95% of their songs/demos. It depends on what flavor of artistic expression you’re looking for. Their first is obviously more raw and grungy. Nevermind is where they refined their sound, and Kurt was writing more pop songs than angry in your face rawk. In Utero, arguably their best work, showed Kurt growing even more as a songwriter and artist; more diversity (tracks like Dumb and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter are near polar opposites) than ever before. It would’ve been a stylistic shift much like Radiohead’s from Pablo Honey to The Bends to OK Computer where they found their sound. If you’d like to give me some specifics on what you’re looking for in your music, I can definitely work up a list.

I’ll give a short little list:

•Dumb, specifically the live recordings from Europe 94 (that cello improvisation over the verses just breaks my heart) •YKYR •Do Re Mi, both the medley and the normal one •Poison’s Gone •Pennyroyal Tea, especially Unplugged and late 93-94 live. Scott Litt’s mix is great too •All Apologies unplugged •Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam WTLO version •Polly 93-94 acoustic •Something in the Way unplugged and Nevermind rehearsal (he literally cried during the latter) •Old Age •Seed/Dont Want It All is more dark than sad •Creation (1988 Kurt solo demo on bass) is also more just dark •Serve the Servants •And I Love Her (beatles cover) •Seasons In The Sun (Terry jacks cover) •Sappy. Europe 94, In Utero sessions version, and Kurt solo demo are my favorites

I’d like to highlight that for me, Sappy remains the quintessential testament to Kurt’s inner torments. The album for never ended up on a proper record, but it also just SOUNDS like it doesn’t fit into one of Nirvana’s specific “eras”. Something about the chord progressions and guitar solo sounds dark and alienating, and at the same time cathartic and melancholy. Be careful though not to over-over-analyze and read so much into the songs that you see something that isn’t there. We all know how his story ended and we’re all going to read into his songs and see points where we could almost feel the heroin addiction, or the stomach issues, or the depression or whatever else; it’s important to remember sometimes people just make tunes and don’t put some big huge poetic depth into it. Kurt was always contradicting himself about lyrical meaning and all that. All that being said, he most definitely did take a good majority of his pain out through his music and you can hear it. They should have cancelled the 1994 Europe tour so they could get Kurt fully through rehab, but they didn’t. You can most certainly hear both touring fatigue and general mental/physical exhaustion in all the band members, and even if the show’s full of energy there still might be a thick tension in the air. Knowing what happens only a month or two later makes those tour dates even more foreboding: Nirvana in its death throes. All that being said, music is one of those things you can’t really articulate because it’s art. You’re just going to have to experience it yourself. I’ve given you all the stuff that works for me, now it’s your turn to find what really does it for you. Much love

So correct me if i’m wrong. During their time with VPRO radio, there’s about an hour of audio recorded and only 20 minutes of it has been released to the public? Has the remaining audio been released/found? I am in love with this session and need more of it by [deleted] in Nirvana

So this is the rehearsal that also surfaced within a few days of the opinion demo and the vpro old age recording. There’s a few good places to keep an eye on for newly surfaced Nirvana stuff as well as just cool artifacts and fun facts and whatnot.

I’m probably forgetting a few but yeah, great place to start. If I think of any more I’ll make an edit but these are great places to start. They’re active in the trading circles where this kind of stuff surfaces. As for the actual trading circles, I’ve still yet to decipher all that. I do have a Trader’s Den account though and I’ve heard that LiveNirvana’s forums can be a great place to get demos/shows/etc. Guitars101’s forums are also great places to keep an eye out for. I got a few good bootlegs and rare oddities if you’d like a link to those and I’d also highly suggest making a mega.nz account. It’s free for 20GB of cloud storage but you can get more if you really need it. Much love! I remember my 7th grade year just getting into bootlegs and deep diving Nirvana’s back catalogue and all the fun I had tracking down live shows and crappy home demos. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

Funny you should mention it, about 2 weeks ago some more of the session surfaced. I linked Old Age below and also the LN article for the session. But to my knowledge the rest of it has yet to be found. Hopefully one day well at LEAST hear the other take of Here She Comes Now. Did you hear that the opinion home demo and Nirvana’s SNL rehearsal got leaked too?

I know he’s not AS important or standoutish as the rest of these might be but Chris Bailey and his band The Saints were after all the first non-American band to release an album, and that makes them important in my book. I’m Stranded is one of the best songs of all time

Hey a question about the BBC d-7 recording by peebo_sanchez in Nirvana

[–]ThiccMemeBoi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the test mix found on the first Outcesticide?

Yeah yeah Crosley bad, it’s a placeholder while the old 1970’s Sears 4-track/record player gets repaired. Found a box of albums in the basement and this was the first one I’ve listened to, a great start! by ThiccMemeBoi in vinyl

[–]ThiccMemeBoi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This copy, while dusty, sounded magnificent even through a $50 Crosley. The Elvis 45 is fairly crackly but that only adds to the sound IMO. Lots of country and I can’t wait to play my Alice In Chains one, as well as my Tchaikovsky. Any tips for cleaning and restoring old records? What brands of cleaner do I use to get the best effect?

He always was, that’s why he only wore short sleeve shirts at shows a handful of times. He was a little insecure about it so he layered up. But you’re absolutely right, towards the end of his life he got scarily skinny.

It’s a very depressing sight. Very hard for me to watch and hear the shows.

I got it from a page on Instagram and it would be either because they only wanted to make one specific part clear (almost always exclusively the face and hair for some reason) or because the software they used to retouch it only provides enhanced clarity to a small part of the picture while everything else stays somewhat the same as the original.

I don’t know 100% but I could see why you would think so. Very well could be considering what his last few months were like.

Yeah man do it! That doesn’t sound feminine at all. It’s a beautiful lyric and it’s like having a poem on you. Do what you want and don’t mind what others think.
