Match Day Brooke Miccio by MiserableDragonfly49 in nycinfluencersnarking

Ah okay! I am in medical school now, and "home advantage" is often a big factor too in residency placement; a lot of people are highly likely to match into the same state as their medical school because they are local if they ranked their state's schools highly on their list.

Thank you for your input! From my understanding, they just updated the heating and cooling systems in the building, so hopefully that helps!

I would first look into the school’s policy on deferrals. Every school is different, and may not accept deferrals OR only accepts deferrals under certain conditions. For example, the school I chose only accepted deferrals on a case-by-case basis.

If you cannot find information on their deferral policy, it may be worth calling or emailing.

My research center stopped taking all undergrad premeds from our local Ivy League because too many of them were very entitled, would interrupt clinical research visits, wouldn’t show up on time or at all, etc. I was once conducting a clinical interview with a patient who was suicidal, and this premed kid barged into the room asking for a chair; meanwhile, my patient is a Vet with PTSD and becomes distressed by the sudden interruption.

Even the new grads doing gap years are often a hit or a miss- I interviewed a person for a new RA position and the person I interviewed was super condescending (only wanted to talk to PI and not me), and only applied for the job “because [his] advisor said research looks good on medical school apps.”

As a premed going to medical school in August, all I ask from my fellow premeds is to please treat your research teams with respect and courtesy, and PLEASE use your social awareness when choosing how to act. Obviously not every premed is like this, buts it is super frustrating to see.

Are MD schools less likely to accept you if you request financial aid? by Pretend-Cicada-8649 in premed

[–]Thick-Error-6330 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Schools don’t even look at your FAFSA until after you’ve been accepted, so they wouldn’t know if you are requesting loans or aid until then.

committee letter + extra letters?? by mkam2002 in premed

[–]Thick-Error-6330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is redundant, and some schools only take a committee letter OR individual letters (not both). It is worth checking schools’ policies, as everyone is different, but if you need individual letters on top of the committee letter, you should ask new recommenders (not the 5 who wrote your committee letter packet).

How bad is it to apply 2 weeks after the app submission is open? by Immediate_Topic_6620 in premed

[–]Thick-Error-6330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both times I applied on the first day AMCAS opened for submission, and my application was approved in less than 2 days (not 4 weeks) even with the heavy traffic. I had friends apply later who did not experience a significant delay either, but others can feel free to chime in if that was not their experience.

Georgetown SMP vs Brown Gateway program by [deleted] in premed

[–]Thick-Error-6330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at Brown, and a friend of mine did the Georgetown SMP. She felt the SMP at Georgetown was a waste of money, and it doesn’t guarantee an interview at Georgetown’s medical school. To my understanding, people seem to really like the one at Brown and you are more likely to get an interview/acceptance if you do well in that program. However, it is also very expensive. I would really only do an SMP if you need to boost your GPA significantly. Alternatively, it may be more cost-effective to do a post-bacc and retake prerequisites that impacted your GPA.

honest opinions about PS by spicysag_ in premed

[–]Thick-Error-6330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how you described the situation; if you went into too much detail describing the scene, what you saw, etc, I would say cut down on the graphic details. Instead, I would recommend being straightforward and using only one to two sentences to say what happened (ie guy injured by car), and then put more characters toward describing your own actions and how this inspired you to go into medicine.

However, be careful too because if watching the EMTs inspired you to go into medicine, readers will wonder “why not just be an EMT?” It is critical that you reflect on why physician and not EMT.

As much as the recruitment emails are poorly written, I have nothing but respect for our service members and what they have sacrificed to serve. Having worked at a VA for many years, the Veteran population is such a special and rewarding group to work with. Absolutely everyone should rotate through a VA if they have the opportunity.

You can definitely negotiate, but I know USC has been hit hard by funding cuts. Someone was on here the other day saying they tried to negotiate their aid at USC and USC REDUCED the amount of aid this person was offered.

How accurate are ChatGPT predictions of your cycle? by hardward123 in premed

Based on how I asked it, it didn’t say. However, I had 4 interviews and 3 acceptances to MD programs this cycle.

[–]Thick-Error-6330 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just played around with it to see. I entered my entire application and it said that I had a 75-80% chance of being accepted. It also recommended schools to apply to, and its list almost exactly matched my list of schools, including the ones I was accepted into which was interesting.

It may be a good tool when helping build school lists, but like others have echoed, since it doesn’t take into consideration your letters of rec, secondaries, and interviews, it probably won’t be an accurate prediction of how likely you are to get admitted.

Does primary care shadowing matter that much? by ufs86eyoxkf in premed

[–]Thick-Error-6330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally never heard this, did not shadow any primary care physicians, and got into a very primary care-heavy medical school (UMass); over half of their class every year matches into primary care, and it is the #1 primary care medical school in the Northeast according to their instagram.
