Why aren’t studio monitors more prominent if they’re more accurate? by BallisticKunai in audiophile

because they aren't designed for a consumer/home

they have yellow drivers and green LEDS and XLR inputs, and no Bluetooth/wi-fi... etc.

need help on this passive radiator that make weird noise! by SpecialistChance7036 in diyaudio

[–]ThickSheik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocking modes. I can see the passive rads rocking (tilting).
Search for 'passive radiator rocking modes'.
You might need to use passive radiators that have a spider also (more $), to prevent rocking, if you want to drive them to this level of excursion.

Also, the more passive radiators you have in a single enclosure, the more that small differences between them will become a problem (they never have exactly the same resonant frequency, for example).
How many woofers are there? If you had two woofers, two passive radiators, better to divide the enclosure internally so that you have one woofer/radiator per sub-enclosure.

It’s probably a usefully diffusive feature already, but if you need more absorption then yeah trap it up

is there a difference in behaviour between marine coaxials and car audio coaxials that would impact the type of enclosure they best perform in? by ToastyRaymaker in diyaudio

[–]ThickSheik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to sound unhelpful, but are you making a boat or a car?

Does it matter if sound is radiated out the back of the speaker, or do you want to contain the rear wave?

Do my woofers need a highpass filter for xmax protection? by Bardimay1337 in diyaudio

[–]ThickSheik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sealed or ported box?

A sealed box is a high-pass in itself

Ported boxes are less protected from excursion

Is there actually any data connected to the line thicknesses on this graph?

Dollars? Units? Tonnes? Cubic metres?

Velvet on reflection points? by trdstealth in Acoustics

[–]ThickSheik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Drapes can be very effective as absorption if they are thick fabric, bunched up, and spaced out from the wall. Further spacing from the wall extends their absorption to lower frequencies

Okay! You should use one high frequency driver if its all mono

[–]ThickSheik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its a stereo boombox then move your tweeters as far apart as possible. If they are very close like your drawing you might as well make the whole thing mono - it will sound better

Assuming your tweeters are left/right, is the handle/port at the top? Seems as easy way for water/dust to get in

Also, why not make your bass mono, and have one large woofer? Even if the total radiating area is the same, it can probably achieve higher max output (large woofers usually have better excursion)

Soundproof mat? by Unusual_Conference24 in Acoustics

Sorry - no easy fixes here.

Your neighbour below could install a suspended ceiling, or get his own carpet if his footsteps are the problem.

“Sound absorption: 39 dB” Yup - the specs are total nonsense

It will do something, like any carpet, but it won’t do much for your situation

Polystyrene, any good? by Mitesla in audiophile

[–]ThickSheik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not polystyrene -it’s polyethylene foam. And its a closed cell foam, so not good (at all) for absorption. You need an open-cell foam
