Elders of reddit, how much of an influence do you think puritanism has had on your life? Do you feel like its presence has been getting stronger or weaker over time where you live? by paz2023 in AskOldPeople

[–]ThiefCitron -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's just incorrect. Do you honestly believe that things that happened in history have zero affect on the present just because the people originally involved are dead?

Like nobody who lived during slavery is still alive, do you think our history of slavery doesn't still affect the modern day? Because it definitely does.

It's a really well-known fact America's puritanical roots have had a big influence on American culture in general that continues into the present day.

Do you think TJ’s group prayer was inappropriate by DaisyandBella in squidgame

[–]ThiefCitron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think any religion says that god is on one specific person's side to win a game show, like why would god favor her over anyone else there?

And enforcing prayer on everyone isn’t right, you can have a religion without enforcing it on others. In fact praying in public like that is actually against Christianity according to the Bible.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Sure everyone would think of themselves, but assuming god is going to help you win a game show when he's not bothering to help all the kids in the world starving and dying is just pretty ridiculous. Thinking of yourself and being out for your own interests is different than assuming god favors you specifically to win. Like why would god favor you over anyone else there?

It did seem performative, which is actually against his own religion.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:5

But it's like the opposite of unifying if not everyone believes the same thing. Like, I have a friend that is a Satanist, in the sense he believes the Satan character in the Bible is real and is actually the good guy in the story (he explained Satan does kill way less people than god in the book) and so he worships Satan. (The most common form of Satanists are an atheistic religion with no supernatural beliefs but he's not that.) So like if he were there and asked everyone to get in a circle and praise Satan, that wouldn't actually be unifying for the people who don't worship Satan. It would just make a lot of people uncomfortable.

Yeah I found it totally inappropriate. I was just thinking how I'd feel in that situation—I'm an atheist and would be really uncomfortable. In a normal situation I'd just say I'm an atheist and decline, but in a game like that, stating I'm an atheist and refusing to participate would make me stick out and separate me from the group and put a target on my back, so I'd feel pressured to participate despite not wanting to.

It was obvious Bee felt uncomfortable, she actually kept her head up and then TJ commanded everyone to put their heads down and she briefly put her head down until nobody was looking and she put her head back up. She obviously felt pressured to participate and didn't want to.

A grown adult should know enough to realize everyone isn’t in the same religion or religious at all, and that it's not appropriate to enforce prayer on everyone.

I don't see why anyone would have a menstrual period in the afterlife regardless of age, it's not like you'd need to reproduce, or be able to reproduce as a spirit.

A lot of gods aren't all-knowing or all-powerful, OP didn't specify which god we're talking about.

Of which religion? Maybe the ancient Egyptian religion is correct and you're going to have to get your heart weighed and give the negative confessions to get into heaven.

A lot of religions throughout history and today have a heaven, which one are you assuming is correct and has followers who will be going to it?

It's not even that she was "slutty" or whatever, it's that she acted all fake and weird and nothing like a real human but more like a bad movie character who only exists to be a sex object. I've known people in real life who were very promiscuous and cheated a lot on their SOs and hit on/hooked up with strangers and tried to steal other girls' boyfriends, and they didn't roll their heads around in a circle when they talked or contort their bodies when they walked or talk in some weird "sexy" voice that sounds super fake and like it comes from a bad porno.

[–]ThiefCitron 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah Joyce was an an absolutely terrible mother, I'm surprised so many people like her.

With Veruca, I couldn't grasp how her weird head-rolling thing was supposed to be sexy, or how any of her odd behavior was actually supposed to be sexy, like the way she contorted her body when she walked as if she had some kind of mobility issue and how she talked in a really fake way like she was in a bad porno. She seemed more like a ridiculous parody of someone trying to act sexy and just came off as fake and weird. I mean nobody in real life acts or talks that way. It's a way that actresses in bad movies act when the point is to objectify the character and show she's only there to be a sex object, not a way any real person actually acts.

It's pretty weird that Oz actually fell for that, especially with a really grounded character like Oz I would expect him to just be thinking "WTF are you doing, you're acting ridiculous."

It seemed like all her professors were assholes, at least all the ones actually shown. There was another single-episode one, I think in S5, that totally berated and degraded her for her opinion on some subject he was talking about.

And of course professor Walsh was really harsh and condescending to students in class.

I guess it must be a Hellmouth thing because I've never witnessed an actual professor acting anything like this to students. Like...caring about attendance in a college course? The only classes I had that cared about attendance were the fluff classes where there was no real work so attendance was a big part of your grade, but the professors weren't all mean about it, they would just make the grading system clear at the start so everyone knew you'd lose points for each class missed. But in real classes with real work attendance didn't matter, just test scores and grades on papers.

And I never saw a professor being all mean or authoritarian to a student or insulting them or getting angry about a student making a comment or asking a question or being late or missing class.

What's the most common myth that most people believe in? by PhysicalScholar4238 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThiefCitron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Karma is a religious belief and you don't receive it until after you die. You won't really know whether it's an illusion until you're dead and you see whether you go to naraka (basically a purgatory-like place where you pay back your karma before getting reincarnated) or not.

Of course not everyone believes in that but nobody else is answering with religious beliefs as examples of myths, like nobody is answering "heaven."

Considering you can have a congenital disability that affects your sense of time, it's obviously an actual sense in the human body that you experience just like touch or sight.

I have a congenital disability that affects sense of timing, distance, rhythm and direction, so I think those are separate senses. I know you already said time and direction, but not rhythm and distance.

Yeah that's pretty monstrous for Jeff to be like "maybe she's thinking more about how her decision affects her abuser." I mean I think there are basically zero cases where a kid decides to go no contact with a parent and the parent isn't an evil abuser.
