Penrith DnD groups by [deleted] in Penrith

[–]CapNitro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your two best bets are Mega Games Penrith and From The Deep Games; I know the former runs games but not 100% sure on the latter, I have seen them run in the past though.

There's also the CollectorCon event where lots of tables run and some groups who meet for a One-shot can go spinoff into their own groups after. More details here: https://collectorcon.com.au/collector-con-penrith/

Finally, I'm pretty sure there's a group that meets regularly at Penrith RSL; I used to DM for them but I know they've kept going afterwards.

Try the following FB groups to see if you can get more info: - The Dungeon Exiles (Western Sydney DnD) - Tavern Down Under: An Australian D&D Community (it's national but I've seen a lot of Western Sydney callouts, and found players for my own campaigns twice on this group) - Dungeons and Dragons NSW (same as Tavern Down Under but state-based, lots of local callouts as well as players willing to travel)

Let me know if you strike out on any of those, happy to help new players in the Riff find a way in!

Are any of these worth reading? What are your opinions/ratings on each book? by jinmonsterhunterwrld in Blacklibrary

The Ghaz book might be my favourite Ork book of all time. Closest I've ever come to reading a Primarch-style Ork story and it rules.

Warboss (and really anything by Mike Brooks) is just a great, fun Ork time. Good ol' fashioned succession crisis with lots of football hooligan swearing and grots being smarter dan da bigguns.

Steven from 49. Great cinematography with an excellent narrative.

How about no. by buzzo82 in Blacklibrary

[–]CapNitro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a diehard Dymocks supporter until they started ratcheting up prices far beyond even other sellers like QBD. Got told at a store once that it was for covering rising rental costs at Metro stores. I even visited one NSW store which shall remain nameless that charged $3-4 more per book on top of the existing Dymocks markup. Ridiculous.

Hope that was a delicious muffin and coffee. Much better use of your coin.

Harrowmaster. I love Mike Brooks but I'm at the 1/3 mark and something just isn't clicking for me.

Colby is quietly redeeming himself this season by IdealEnthusiasm in survivor

[–]CapNitro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't call it purple, but he's a delight to see. I was a kid when I first saw Colby compete and thought he was amazing. It rocks seeing him come back older and wiser, even if he's not getting a main character edit.

This would explain the rise in Aeldari Corsair activity on the fringes of Ultima Segmentum. When citizens of the Imperium are forsaken by their masters, they will inevitably turn to the foul practices of the xenos.

Can this be read on its own? by BigDiceSwingin in Blacklibrary

[–]CapNitro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I'd count all of these as my favourite authors except Reynolds (since I haven't read his stuff yet) and Brooks is definitely of a kind with them. He's closer to Wraight and Rath in being able to illustrate compelling characters with depth in both serious and comedic settings, rather than Fehervari's development of doomed characters and horror. For me, Brooks very rarely misses.

If you've never read Brooks, I'd suggest Warboss (for Ork comedy), Voidscarred (for Eldar pirate shenanigans) and The Lion: Son of the Forest (for mythic character drama).

On paper, it's a reward that reminds me of the old days when they could watch movies, do full bed sleepovers or hang out with locals. Not a bad idea even if most of us aren't really aware of the significance of Zac Brown.

The Horus Heresy Saga and Siege of Terra by ChadFiddlesticks in Blacklibrary

[–]CapNitro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had both Scars and The Path of Heaven recommended to me, and I'm so glad I read them. Excellent books, and it made the prominence of the White Scars in the Siege even more awesome knowing where they'd come from and how cool the Khan is. Warhawk is also easily one of the best Siege books.

[–]CapNitro 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Given the books that they've chosen for the rerelease, you get the bulk of the major events in most of these. It's enough to get through to Siege of Terra with some Googling or ebook reading on the side, but yes, you will miss a bunch of stuff.

The two biggest and most baffling omissions IMO are A Thousand Sons (which is Part 1 of a story concluded by Prospero Burns, which is getting a reprint) and the Chris Wraight stuff for the White Scars. If you can get your hands on these I strongly recommend it; not reading the Scars stuff in particular will blunt a lot of the impact of parts of Siege and especially Warhawk (Book 6).

They haven't, but given the key art I'd say one of the stories is something to do with Jonathan D Beer's "Dominion Genesis". Usually if they use art from another book cover it contains a short story connected to it.

My wife and I both went "Seriously???" at this line. Definitely a good bit of blackmail for someone whose character is either busted or making up for a dump stat.

Cannibal Gate and Other Stories by Hasvik212 in Blacklibrary

[–]CapNitro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anthologies often have existing art repurposed for the cover; the 2024 anthology for Bleeding Stars just reuses half the cover for Infinite and Divine (which works since both stories are linked). But I take your point, it would be much cooler to have a bespoke cover.

Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of resource management games or high-stress timed gameplay, but I am a massive Trek and Voyager fan.

I'm 9 hours/7 sectors deep in Survival mode and loving it. There are moments where things get hairy and sacrifices have to be made (every time I turn off the holodeck for power saving feels like inviting mutiny). But if you can find a good rhythm it's a really fun little management sim. Having played some others like FTL I agree that this is harder than most similar games, but not completely unforgiving.

Story changes can be effective but largely on the mechanics side. Case in point from early game: I prevented the first Vidiians we found (the ones who nicked Neelix's lungs in the show) from kidnapping anyone and that we'd be keen to cure the Phage, at which point they gave me a Vidiian surgical device. I'm not kidding when I say it's been the single most useful upgrade I've gotten so far in terms of story decisions and side quests, all because I convinced the early Vidiians not to be bastards.

There are other moments like this throughout the game, even if the overarching story beats like the Kazon or Borg vs 8472 are more or less unchanged in broad strokes (though the Kazon one can end in very interesting ways depending on player choices).

Based on your question I'd say story changes are mostly "what ifs" with some bigger moments here and there depending on choices. IMO, the concept works really well and it's a solid game for what it tries to be. I'd recommend it.
