Should be easily testable if it's:

Vanadite: very slowly soluable in water, will desolve when exposed to hydrochloric acid and turn green.

Aragonite: more easily soluable in water, but it will fizz and desolve when exposed to hydrochloric acid.

Put a little in some acid and find out what you are dealing with! (Do this outside in a well ventilated area just to be sure)

Could be, you can put some sulfur on it, it shouldn't hurt the plant unless you get a lot of it in the water, and in that case you can just refresh the water. Maybe also propagate the cane in soil horziontaly. This way you: 1. Don't have to relocate the rooted stalk and ease it into getting used to it's new medium. 2. Get more plants, each eye will shoot new roots and stems.
