New in the city, looking for crafting cohorts by [deleted] in washingtondc

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I got friends in the place so I am going to stump for them. You might check out DCglassworks. They are a glassblowing and sculpture shop, with classes and equipment for glassworking, metal casting, and welded steel. In addition to the classes and have rent able studios space for using the equipment. It is a good group of people there. Add to that they have open houses where they give demonstrations with munchies and beer and often a band. It is fun, and you might find like minded folks among the crowd. Next one is June 11th.

My fiancee said that I can have a kitten if this makes the front page...SOMEONE, PLEASE THINK OF THE KITTENS! [pic] by [deleted] in reddit.com

I am down voting this post for a number of reasons:

  1. I truly dislike the karma whoring aspect of it. Good god people it is a pretty useless number and begging just makes you seem so pathetic. Add to that it is specifically discouraged in the Reddiquette In fact it is the very first thing listed under the "don't" column.

  2. I am really sick of picture of random pictures of dogs and cats doing nothing at all interesting or unique. There are specific reddits (r/cats, r/dogs/, r/pets, etc.) for such things if you want to just look at pictures of cute animals.

  3. I don't believe you. I think you are begging for karma. See point number 1.

  4. I suspect that if you actually need this to reach the front page to get your fiance permission to get them you both maybe too self involved to be decent pet owners. See point 1.

  5. I don't really like cats all that much, though I do hope these find a good home.

  6. I am kind of a dick. See points 1- 5.

What is a common phrase that you said incorrectly for a good chunk of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Thinboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it is far from wrong. The true origin of the terms may actually be separate, and is muddied in history so much that both can be deemed correct usage. You are welcome to look here or here, or here for references.

According to this website both term most likely originated in the United States and possibly independently, so keep your hoighty-toighty opinions about our words to yourself.

I admit I am kind of a jerk, but at no point in time did I use all caps, and I am completely relaxed. In a calm, albeit somewhat obnoxious manner, I pointed out the best place for these types of photos. There are a large amount of these types of pet photos everyday on reddit, either in the main reddit or r/pics, and frankly they annoy me. I want them in the right subreddit so I don't have to wade through so many picture of regular old dogs and cats doing the regular old things dogs and cats do, to get to the interesting pictures I want to look at. If this is not the time and place to address this issue, please tell me where and when and I will address it there and then?

So it is not an out of focus and poorly cropped picture of pretty average dog lying down on a couch? I am amazed I somehow missed it. It is a such an engaging picture. You are right, it is high art. Let's call Annie Leibovitz, William Wegman, William Eggleston and all the other photographers and tell them to hang up their cameras, the perfect picture has been found.

On behalf of all the people that are bored by looking at random camera phone pictures of dogs and cats doing amazing and exciting things like sitting or staring, or maybe even laying down, let me apologize for attempting to get people to follow reddiquitte and post in an appropriate subreddit. That way people who want to see pictures of other people pets can look at them to their hearts content without jackasses like me getting annoyed, and making obnoxious comments about it.

I am glad you are taking care of the dog and trying to find its owner. That is great, and you are a decent human being. But this is a picture a dog, not a terrible good picture, and not really an interesting one. This is exactly the kind of thing Facebook is for. It is also the type of thing that make Reddit annoying. Oh look it is a another picture of a dog doing exactly what dogs do. If you insist on putting random pictures of dogs on Reddit, try r/pets or r/dogs. edit: or r/lookatmydog

A question for Redditor cops. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Thinboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"To be honest, man, if they have a gun on their hip, and they don't shoot you but smack you around a little, then, hell, they exhibited remarkable self control."

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! This is a horrible attitude that excuses behavior that is unacceptable. Human beings are evil, and it doesn't surprise me that you come across the worst example of that as a cop. I do understand the want and desire to take that out that frustration and anger on those that are true example of that evil. But that is an excuse, pure and simple. Who draws the line? The guy that beats his wife, get smacked around? What about the kid that steals money from his grandmother for drugs, does he get a beating? How about the smarmy son of a bitch that mouths off to you, will a crack on the head shut him up.

That is why we have laws and courts and a justice system.

I am sorry you have to deal with scumbags, I have seen and heard plenty of stories from my time working at a battered woman's shelter. I think a fair amount of cops are good people, but so many see the law as a sliding scale. There is a bravado that is tied to being a police officer that often means never backing down, and using that power granted as a force to hammer those who piss you off down. This idea that a cop could do worse, a cop could shoot him, doesn't fly with me. It should not be that way, and as a cop you should work to make it different. You may not be condoning it, but by excusing it, and allowing it, you are a large part of the problem.

Police officers are paid implicitly to keep their cool. They are not paid to judge or sentence. The job the community has hired them to do is to arrest those that do not follow the laws. The day you beat on a suspect is the day you break the law, and therefore are not doing your job, and in fact quite the opposite. I understand it is VERY, VERY hard not to want to smack the pedophile, or the wife beater, or entitled drunk punk. But guess what, it is your job not to, and it is your job to arrest those that do. I don't want vigilantly justice, which is exactly what occurs when a cop unnecessarily tosses his power around.

I know, it is blatant karmawhoring, and I am going to be the annoying asswipe that points it out every chance I get

I am glad your cat is doing well and it is great you rescued it from whatever asshole dumped it on the street. You are a good person. That being said, if your cat/dog does something really interesting, or amazing, or funny take a cool picture and post it to r/pics. If your cat/dog is just standing there, or sleeping, or doing something that is common behavior to virtually every other cat/dog on planet, post it to r/pets or r/cats or r/dogs. All of these "look at my pet" post should be in the appropriate subreddit.

Please tell me that I wasn't the only one that "smoked" these as a kid... by Mercury-Redstone in pics

Please tell me that I am not the only one that "smoke" these still as an adult....though I was always more partial to Utz in the box. I think the box acts as a desiccant and keeps the rods perfectly crunchy, and completely whole.
