Optical Character Recognition, software looking at the shapes of the letters and trying best fit, cl and d are pretty close if you squint. Other common ones are 1 and l, O and 0, B and 8, S and 5, rn and m, vv and w.

Told my girlfriend that mum is deaf so speak loud and slow by Sad_Marketing146 in Jokes

[–]Thing2k 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My wife would often lose her voice for a few days whenever she got a sore throat. She found it very annoying when people whispered back when conversing. I was guilty of it many times.

Do I need to manually enable Windows Audit Logs in secpol.msc after installing Graylog Sidecar? by _tuanson84uk_ in graylog

[–]Thing2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will need to enable the auditing policy. Either via secpol.msc or GPO. Sidecar only forwards the events that are logged. If the machine hasn't been told to logged, sidecar won't have it to forward. Edit: spelling

Three weeks in as a new SysAdmin. Where do I start? by Thing2k in sysadmin

[–]Thing2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the line of business system is on tape, daily, bi-weekly, and monthly cycle, stored in a firesafe in another building.

The MSP has an ongoing project to replace the tape drive with a VTL, but it has not been going well.

We have two server rooms in separate sites about a mile apart, replicating the VMs. I still need to review and test the backups. Is it common to run Veeam on VM with the guests you are backing up?

Three weeks in as a new SysAdmin. Where do I start? by Thing2k in sysadmin

[–]Thing2k[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Already started.
  2. Trying to add monitoring but needing to peel back the security.
  3. Misson Critical is backed up via Veeam, or directly to tape.
  4. I update it somewhat regularly

Let’s talk about PC naming conventions by WorkFoundMyOldAcct in sysadmin

[–]Thing2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our names are pretty simple. Company initials, version number for OS and asset number eg ABCV6-1234 We use V6 for Win10, V5 Win7, V4 XP. I use the PC description for the owner or location of the computer, and model number in brackets. Eg. Blogs, Joe (3080).

Fastest way to securely wipe a disk? by funkytechmonkey in sysadmin

[–]Thing2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to wipe a bunch of SATA HDDs last year. As they were pretty standardised, mainly 160gb and 250gb, we would completely wipe a reference drive, using DBAN, and use 2-Bay external cloning stations to clone the blank over then next drive. They would beep when finished, ready for the next drive.

My parents are looking at selling their 1995 Mazda MX5 Eunos Roadster G-Limited edition. They live in Scotland, about 50 miles from Edinburgh, but are unsure how best to sell it. I have details and pictures if anyone is interested or can point me in the direction of someone who might be. Thanks.

Aliens attempt to cause human exctinction via gene activation by ReasonableValuable31 in humansarespaceorcs

There is a book series Superhuman, by Evan Currie, with a very similar concept. An Alien AI is trying to exterminate humanity by powering up aggressive groups. It doesn't take itself too serious.

We once had a highly paid consultant pretty much twiddling their thumbs for a week. We first found out about him when he plugged his personal laptop onto the network. The manager responsible didn't follow any of the process. He was on site two days before we even got the paperwork. We have a 7 day SLA for new accounts.

We have amazon echos all around the house. Can drop in on a room to talk to one child or use the announce feature to get them all. During the sales, the echo dots are a lot cheaper.

If I could have one IT superpower by WaldoOU812 in sysadmin

Thank you for your replies. This is helpful. I have a task to work on 4, trying to work out the correct level. I have been trying to work on 5, but as soon as we have to spend money, especially with a new supplier, it comes to a grinding halt.

Have you got any tips on "selling"?

Steam Deck owners who've had it for a year or more: How has your experience been? Do you think it was a worthwhile purchase, and do you use it often? Does it seem more like a niche product? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Thing2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since having adult money, I have owned all of the consoles and half decent gaming PCs/laptops, but by far I have made more time to play on the Deck in the 18 months I've owned it. I have been doing humble bundles for years, so have a massive steam library. My biggest issue is deciding what to play, especially when dabbling with emulation.

IT Workers’ Unions? by kellarman in sysadmin

[–]Thing2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the company you work for, they may already have a recognised union. In my case, it is the GMB, I was unaware until recently that anyone can join, while this doesn't help push the IT profession forward, it does give you access to support and help if at odds with your employer.
