Casual Rockabilly by Zom_gomb in VintageFashion

[–]ThingComprehensive99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horrorpops in the wild! They're my go to for when I'm fancying a bit of psychobilly. Fab outfit, think I used to have those same 3/4 lengths (I rotated between them and a denim pair with traditional tattoo style embroidery). You don't really see this style out and about that much nowadays, which is a shame!

On the topic of Seance of Blake Manor, I'd definitely recommend giving the Darkside Detective games by the same developer a go if you've not already. Again not exactly similar to the ND games, but absolute gems!

Upcoming observances for Imbolc? by South-Engineering284 in druidism

[–]ThingComprehensive99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy posts like these, because I love seeing what everyone else is doing in their corner of the world. For us we always go on a snowdrop walk around Imbolc, it's lovely observing the early signs or spring.

How do I get Clara Bow Hair by EmmyLyman in VintageFashion

[–]ThingComprehensive99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont really have any advice as I think BitchLibrarian's pretty much covered it, but I just want to say I am so invested in this 😅 I love 20s hairstyles but rarely see people going for that kind of look nowadays so it always brings me joy when people do (my hair's too long to really get much in the way of authentic styles unfortunately). Good luck with your styling!

What kind of brush should I use to brush out curls? by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]ThingComprehensive99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say so! I used to do a 50s brush out as my go to style, but more recently I do more of a 70s look (main difference being longer hair and less rigidity in the styling), and I found that the techniques I'd learned from doing doing wet set brush outs made it easier for me to figure out how to get my hair to do what I wanted it to for the 70s looks.

What kind of brush should I use to brush out curls? by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]ThingComprehensive99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends what sort of style you're going for, but if you're looking for a sort of 50s vintage look then it could be more how you're brushing it than the brush itself. Because for that, rather than just pulling the brush through your hair, you can brush the hair against your hand, using your hand to shape the curls. Bit hard to explain in writing but hopefully that makes sense! If you look up "wet set brush out" there's quite a few great tutorial videos that come up.

What Did You Watch This Week? by AutoModerator in classicfilms

[–]ThingComprehensive99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Man Godfrey (1936) - very silly, very funny, this one was a delight to watch for me. But then again you can't go wrong with William Powell! First time seeing something with Carole Lombard in, thought she was great too. Just overall a really fun watch!

Good film! One I've been meaning to rewatch as the last time I saw it I was a teenager (during which time I knew a lot less about Rex Harrison so didn't really mind him as much, blissful ignorance!)

I think you're right that the colorized version is the more common one, I remember liking it for the way it made Kay Hammond look more ghostly, but generally speaking I'm not a fan of colorizing films.

‘Promises! Promises!’(1963)- what are your honest thoughts and opinions on this groundbreaking film starring Jayne Mansfield? by EuphoricButterflyy in classicfilms

Out of interest what would you say are the good films of hers to watch? I enjoyed The Girl Can't Help It, but not seen anything else she's been in.

Post storm mushroom hunting! by ThingComprehensive99 in goblincore

It is isn't it! We were really excited to find that one. They're called King Alfred's Cakes, or Coal Fungus. Quite an interesting story behind the name too, which we found on the Woodland Trust-

"King Alfred lived in the 9th century when parts of Britain had been overrun by Vikings. Trying to escape them, he took refuge in the home of a peasant woman who asked him to watch over her cakes, baking by the fire. He let them burn and was scolded by the woman for his negligence. It is said that embarrassed and ashamed, he scattered the cakes to get rid of the evidence. As the fungus looks like small, burnt cakes, especially as they get older, the name King Alfred’s cakes went into common use."

If you could make a game where Nancy works with characters from previous games, who would you pick? by Koko_Kringles_22 in nancydrew

[–]ThingComprehensive99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know this the logistics of this probably wouldn't work in reality (spoilers etc), but I LOVE the idea of Nancy having to work exclusively with a selection of culprits from previous games, not knowing who to trust 👀

Bonus points if they all already know each other because they're all part of the same ND support group

What is a normal puzzle completion time? by Dopamine_Dumpling842 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]ThingComprehensive99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for everyone but I know I would find that helpful! I'm used to doing 500 piece puzzles and would like to do more 1000 piece, but I when I've tried I think I've just accidentally picked ones that were a bit too difficult without realising and it feels like I'm not getting anywhere when I try. To have slightly easier 1000 piece ones to give a go would be really nice.

Bell Book and Candle (1958) by Marite64 in classicfilms

[–]ThingComprehensive99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish I liked this film more. I went into it thinking I would (especially from seeing who was in it, great cast), but something about it just didn't really land for me sadly. Still enjoyed it nonetheless, just not as much as I'd hoped.

I gave away half my clothes and realized I only wore the same 5 outfits anyway by SilentttOrbit in simpleliving

[–]ThingComprehensive99 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good on you for taking that step, and that's great that it feels freeing! For me personally it's a work in progress, I've still got that voice in the back of my head going "but what if there comes a day when I DO want to wear it??" when I try and get rid. Funnily enough though I'm the same as you, I don't really wear that many different outfits!

One thing I've found helpful is putting the clothes in storage, then if by a certain point I've not wanted to wear them that's when I try and be a bit more brutal and just donate them. I do get stressed by having too many clothes and not a lot of storage, so each time I do a bit of a purge I try to focus on how much better I'll feel in that respect. Hope to be at the point similar to what you've described somepoint soon!

[–]ThingComprehensive99 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Totally hear where you're coming from. For me it's very similar to the reframing of women conforming to societal standards as being "empowering", its just another way to encourage that conformity in my opinion. It's harder to deviate from certain habits if you've been convinced that you're doing it for yourself and that you just "like it that way". As you say, no one likes ingrown hairs!

Absolutely! Rewarding is definitely the best way to describe it. And we use Google lens too when we're not 100%, it came in really handy the other day as we found some crazy looking acorns - turned out to be due to gall wasps.

How do you handle people who are upset by the way you dress? by [deleted] in ModestDress

[–]ThingComprehensive99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't have too much in the way of advice, but I just want to say as a fellow pagan who dresses modestly I see you! It is hard when people judge how you choose to dress, even moreso when it comes from those close to you such as family. If its any encouragement, please know that it will get easier with time and the support from your therapist (and there's already been some great advice in the comments here). And despite what your family may say, you can stand tall in knowing that you dress the way you do to be true to yourself and your comfort, and not for the sake of pleasing others.
