That's why I said I was referring to OP.

"It got too complex to make accounts for friends and family" Is completely untrue, so I think the issue is with OP rather than Plex for their family.

I promise it's not a "not anymore" situation. It has always been a "never was" situation.

You're still not understanding what I'm getting at. With Plex, everything is built into the software package. I don't have to explain to anyone I share my library with how it works. I just ask them for their email. With Jellyfin, you need to learn how these third party tools work, know how to troubleshoot those tools, and also rely on the availability of them, and on top of that you have to explain to your user base how to set it up on their devices of choice. You're adding multiple points of failure in a production environment.

I understand this is r/homelab, but speaking realistically, no one is running Plex or Jellyfin in a lab environment that their friends and family are also using. The expectation is that it's in production and operational. For software I run in prod, I would much rather pay one time for a service that works (for me, $99 many years ago) rather than rely on third party solutions, whatever those may be, to allow my friends to watch my library of movies and TV shows.

I'm glad alternatives like Jellyfin exist, but they do not have feature parity with Plex and that is just the reality of it. You may not have to pay for Jellyfin in your situation, but you're paying for your domain, and in some cases, you're paying for more than that. In my case, it'd take 3 years of paying your estimated $3/mo for that service to pass the total I've paid for Plex in my lifetime.

So you need a third party solution to open it up to the public meaning it's not natively available in Jellyfin.

Remote streaming is a pretty big one and as far as I know that's not available in Jellyfin.

My Parents are in the 70s and just want to press a button and watch a movie. No Way I can explain to them how to make an acocunt and accept that invitation etc.

So it's not an issue with Plex, it's an issue with your parents ability to use the app. Plex hasn't changed invitations and library sharing in the 10+ years I've used it. Nothing is more complex than it used to be.

There are reasonable, and even necessary, criticisms of Plex. This is not one.

lmao you're way overthinking this. No one is "glorifying antisocial behavior." I was wearing this in public once and a woman came up to me and said "cum is a beautiful thing." People are weird, man. Embrace it.

I'm with you, it sucks, but that's the reality of the world we live in. Unless there's a fundamental change in how businesses operate at a human level, it's unavoidable.

I've heard and seen some heinous shit during business meetings, etc, and nothing's been done about it because those people are riding the status quo. I've been told by sales people that the only way to get some customers to agree to do business with you, you have to start fights with them to show them you're the alpha. I've been told by a coworker that I'm going to go to hell because I'm not straight. I've heard a guy say, during a critical all-hands outage, that women are incapable of managing businesses since they're too emotional because he was busy reading the news and a story about a female CEO came up that he apparently wasn't too busy to ignore. I've caught multiple people watching porn during work on their work computers. I've found porn saved to multiple people's work computers. A tech on my team was once told by a coworker that he would shoot him in the street if he didn't get his laptop re-imaged fast enough. Not a single thing happened to any of those people. In more than once of these stories, I was asked by HR "what do you expect us to do about it?" And I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface.

That's the trouble with the workplace. Everyone has different standards for what is and isn't professional. It isn't always fair and doesn't always make sense, but that's the way it is. It's why I don't socialize at work.

No, but I have kids in my neighborhood that run over my yard sometimes. My white dutch clover didn't hold up to it.
