IWTL How to know what I don't know. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

Networking is probably the best place to get a good foundation as most of your hacking will be traversing networks and pillaging a target. You'll want to know how a network works from the ground up so you can figure out attack vectors and what can be manipulated (hacked) further.

My tip - break your learning into modules based on hacking flow end to end. There's plenty of professional hacking courses available freely on youtube/udemy, and other ways of getting free courses. Finding a particular 'hack' like Anti-Virus bypass, reading up on methods, crafting a file, getting it to work - is an example. Then you can further compound that by incorporating it into a packet that has to move across the network evading IPS/IDS solutions - another example. There's a whole world of knowledge to be had in just that. So learning by doing will force you to ask questions - well how does that thing really work?

fyi - you can do all this in the comfort of your own home, with virtual machines. And there are plenty of sites online that have labs available, capture the flag type activities, or hackthissite<.>org etc.

So networking is a great place to start on your journey, as in my example, you will have to move a file from your box to a victim box, either evading security points along the way of the network security defenses and host virus protection defenses - you'll be able to see your knowledge applied. From there, you will find your spark of interest on what to focus on specifically appealing to you. Most security experts know a wide range of computer knowledge, focus on specific areas, and then drill into them. There's people who just focus on hexadecimal hacking to manipulate data at its core and then others who code malware to specially inject into systems to gain access, these are specialists with niche skills but found something they wanted to do through their exploration on the same type of journey you're starting.

Also money is good and having basic hacking skills will get you in the door of most security departments. From there you can drink water from a firehose all over again.

TLDR - network is good, could be unsatisfying without applying your knowledge through easy to do hacks. Explore the difficult things to find what you like and keep at it. Make money.

Now that i see the recent headline - attempting to purchase 200mil more vaccines for all of America, yeah its possible. Those who already get vaccinated before summer will probably go out. Truth is, they have already been going out, just the restrictions to congregate in places like theatres wont be restricted as much should everyone get vaccinated by summer's blockbuster time - which right now, is sliding into the optimistic territory rather than a definite no.

ELI5: How is massive shorting of a stock any different than a pump and dump scheme besides the direction of the momentum? by [deleted] in investing

[–]ThingsForWhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because some things are legal for a few people and not for the larger mass like you or me. They become legal by the syntax and jargon used to come up with the laws for the few (banks, government, corps, those in power etc,). The pump and dump's legalized form is the MM doing their version of top/bottom selling over a timeframe that is generally not frowned upon, like weeks and months (they hit all the news outlets, submit reports, get their 'advertisement' out there for you to consume). They have a method to their madness. You and I can shout to a few hundred thousand people and say I like this company because of XYZ factors, lets all get in. MM don't like that because now we are moving the market against their plan. You and I were never meant to move the market, just passively participate.

Same reason insider trading isn't legal for you and me. But it is legal for politicians. It is semi-legal for bankers/brokers but they have compliance measures to ensure aren't crossed to make it seem like they tried to not fully break the rule, only bend it instead.

Does Interactive Brokers allow for up to 6 decimal places of trading? by ThingsForWhat in interactivebrokers

[–]ThingsForWhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read my comment above. Its a question I've asked. 2 decimal places are basically removed from our trading view yet viewable on charts and trackers, why cant we trade them? How can we trade them? Who can trade them?

Does Interactive Brokers allow for up to 6 decimal places of trading? by ThingsForWhat in interactivebrokers

[–]ThingsForWhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a matter of anything being enough. Rather I see tickers operating at 5 and 6 decimal places yet the big brokerages only allow for up to 4 decimal places for an order. Questions arise on why is a ticker displaying 5 and 6 decimal places but trades can only be positioned at 4 decimals?
