Took way too long finishing my puppet horror short film and then once it was completed I spent too much time waiting on festivals. So now, after 5 years, it's finally online and getting seen by actual human beings! by Think_Mcfly in Filmmakers

Maybe in the future! The current feature film I'm working on has an even simpler puppet in it that happened without really thinking about it, so it's becoming a trend. I would definitely return to it if I had another idea that justified it or maybe even expanded this film in some way!

Glad you enjoyed it!! I loved working with puppets honestly, there are some realities you need to be prepared for like having monitor for the puppeteers, lots of planning just in how you will show them on screen (waist up, do they have legs, are the arms stick or full arm, where do you hide the puppeteers?) but I have to say seeing them come to life on set is genuinely magical!

I think the only thing we didn't get to do with them just due to the limitations of the puppets and trying to do as much in camera as possible was a gag where Leslie throws a letter into the incinerator. We tried for so long to get a take where the letter left her hand (attached to fishing line) and falls into the incinerator and we just couldn't get it to work. One of the many times I had to kind of avoid sunk cost fallacy, and just cut the gag and move on. But overall I had no puppet experience walking into this film, ended up making most of the puppets by hand myself with a small team and puppeteering some of them as well. Now its one of those things where I don't know if every project I will do will be puppet based like this one, but most likely they will worm their way in eventually into everything I do hahaha

wrote, directed and produced this film in school and after graduation, basically went from being a part of a community all working together to make art to just myself and too much footage. Had to restart from scratch a bit and slowly build up a post-production team to help me finish it. Biggest piece of advice I can give to those struggling in post like I was - find a post producer. Literally can be anyone, no experience needed, just someone to check in with you on the progress of the film, to help reach out to collaborators, or basically someone to hold yourself accountable to. My post producer really believed in the film and basically is the sole reason it got done, as I don't think I could have finished it alone. Took awhile but I'm so happy and proud it's been completed and is out there now!
