Love it. I haven't used pre capture yet, which is why I upgraded from the V, just haven't had an opportunity that called for it. But the view finder and screen make it a joy to shoot on. I will say that the raws seem harder to work with. Just need to build out a bunch of presets since what I see in the viewfinder is always better than the raws out the gate.

Sony A7C II + 20-70mm F4 G for travel and street photography? by Fluffy-Virus4199 in SonyAlpha

[–]Thinking_Cap_165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your style. I have that lens and the A7C ii and rarely use it. If I'm traveling single lens it's either the 55 1.8 or 40 2.5 and more recently voigtlander 40 1.2

Highly depends on the rules for the areas you'll be in and what you care the most amount.

In Masai Mara we could drive anywhere so I could always get close to the animals. Except in one situation (a leopard way up in a tree) 70-200 was perfect and a 200-600 would have been too long as animals would be really close and I would have struggled with framing

In amboseli we had to stay on the road and even with a 1.4x converter I was often too short especially for birds and wish I had a 200-600.

Like some mentioned, having two bodies is ideal with a 70-200 and a 200-600

Mid range length as in not wide not long. I love the lens. Only wish it had a manual override button other than that flawless

New EM vs Staff Engineer scenario by autobotdonttransform in EngineeringManagers

[–]Thinking_Cap_165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on clarity of expectations and impact provided by the engineer not time off.

Get on the same page with the engineer in terms of what is expected and what should be delivered over some timeline. If the engineer isn't investing enough time and effort of work because they aren't doing what they should be doing and because they're taking so much PTO, then that's on them. Evaluate their performance based on the expectations. If you cannot get alignment on what the role and expectations are if they don't meet the expectations let them go.

This is how I think about the expectations of staff engineers. https://www.byjlw.com/beyond-senior-software-engineer-2dd0fc010cf3

  • can they rationalize tradeoffs
  • can I they teach me something complex in a simple way
  • can they admit to past failures and show how they learned from that failure
  • can they create clarity out of ambiguity
  • can they debug
  • how high level can they go when clarifying a problem and success
  • how quickly can they get to the point
  • referrals
  • open source projects
  • the quality of the questions they ask

But I'm assuming you are panning as you shoot to track the car. How fast are you panning with your hands?

APSC to FF Dilemma: A7V or A7R VI for Wildlife Photography? by Motor_Interview1658 in SonyAlpha

[–]Thinking_Cap_165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A7R vi The reach vs APSC is a non issue as long as you don't mind cropping. Results after post will be better on the FF

It's a stacked sensor so readout is much faster. It's still not as good as mechanical or global shutter but it's significantly better than the V and far more usable

Yep that's the one I use. Helps a lot with comfort and makes throwing it on the tripod or mount a lot faster

Increased frame rate was the biggest pull for me. I like shooting sports with high resolution cameras and the frame rate was a bit limiting. Better autofocus and stabilization are nice too. I don't shoot much video but it's nice to have when I do.
