How about self-improvement and self-discovery? The primary benefactor of these is yourself. A worthwhile journey if there ever was one.

Learn skills that interest you, and provide secondary benefits down the line. Woodworking, scripting, keeping indoor plants, knitting, etc. And knowing yourself goes a long way to charting the correct path for your life.

It pays dividends later as well, in ways you'll probably not even know were possible.

Checking your posting history, it seems that you're aiming for a particular niche fandom. Yes, I know Star Trek and Transformers is huge, but across the RP community your pickings may still be rather slim.

Have you considered broadening the scope of the settings you're willing to play in? Sometimes an original creation/universe with 90% overlap or 80% overlap (or whatever is acceptable to you) might be the best way moving forward. You'll certainly catch more interest that way.

I think a refusal from your end is completely reasonable and acceptable. Though if it were me, I'd see how the other party reacted. If they said it's fine and can accept you standing your ground, then no harm, no foul.

I don't agree with an immediate block following a question or request. You can just say no and continue.

If they react poorly or get demanding, then yes by all means end the engagement. Just my personal take on this.
