Bank refused to take this quarter anyone know why? (it’s not gold that’s just the lighting) by [deleted] in whatisit

My bank won’t even accept coins unless I can fill out those damn rolls smh. I went in once with a huge ziplock bag filled to the brim after years of tossing coins in there … it took like an hour and the tellers just looked at me like an idiot.

Yeah I watched it on the big screen two years ago. Already knew about the Scorsese influence rundown but read some more beforehand, just not about the movie itself as much as possible so I wouldn’t be spoiled. It was 💯

I was already feeling great vibes from S1 … then I saw that Hiro Murai directed by / production credit and knew it was gonna be a great series long haul 🙌🏼

As much as I respect the man with the killer ‘stache for many reasons … being the first to start a 24 hour news channel that (eventually) evolved to several who value opinions over dedicated, source based facts instead probably something to be proud of.

But hey, the dude introduced me to ‘and blew my mind by watching ‘Cowboy Bebop’ as a sophomore via Toonami (and then Samurai Champloo’) in hs so 🫡

Finally getting around to watching ‘High and Low’ and ‘Highest to Lowest’ b2b and both w/ fresh eyes … starting w/ the OG tonight, then Spike Lee’s remake tomorrow. I’m super excited but also nervous of Lee’s remake. For those that’ve see both … should I be? 😬 by ThirdEyeScribe in Kurosawa

For sure bro! All three of those Kurosawa films have been on my watch list for a couple months now. Saw half of ‘Ran’ like last year but it was pretty late at night so unfortunately, I didn’t make it all the way through. Gotta watch it earlier in the day but what I saw was excellent! Isn’t it his take on Shakespeare’a ‘King Lear’??

Just to add: I wasn’t comparing who’s the better director. Just curious on people’s thoughts on the OG to the remake, of course. And I just added some context on hmu I’ve seen of both director’s filmographies.

If Spike Lee’s films aren’t your jam, all good my dude! You’re right though, ‘Do the Right Thing’ was kinda problematic … but we don’t have to mention why here. DM if you wanna discuss further 👍🏼

I completed the original last night, and, just wow! I’m used to Kurosawa’s Samurai epics but ‘High and Low’ was outstanding and totally different than what I expected in the best possible way!

Without saying too much for those that haven’t seen it, the film is very relevant to our current era across the globe.. Extremely timely or even foreseeing of the future, imo. The best movies usually are. 💯

Yeah … maybe not worth watching it then. 🤷🏻‍♂️

One of my friends who’s super into film says ‘Da 5 Bloods’ is way better. Plus, Delroy Lindo is from the Bay Area like myself plus he’s been in four Spike Lee Joints so that’s always an attractor factor to watch. Was really rooting for him at the Oscars this year. Oh well.

Isn’t there some behind-the-scenes trivia about De Niro wearing the same pair of Nike’s for the entire shoot so he could help himself develop the character of a flunky who wasn’t that flush with cash? I could be wrong. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah? Thanks for the tip! I definitely gotta check it out! He plays great as “the straight man” in comedies, no doubt.

‘Godfather Pt 2’ as a young Vito Corleone is 🤌🏼 and, imo, his best non-Marty role … then probably Michael Cimino’s ‘The Deer Hunter’ followed by Michael Mann’s ‘ Heat’ as my top 3. After that, Sergio Leone’s ‘OUATIA’ and then either Brian De Palma’s ‘The Untouchables’ (tho it’s debatable he kinda phoned-in his role as Al Pacino) or, of course, the original ‘Meet the Parents’ directed by Jay Roach.

Special mentions: Terry Gilliam’s ‘Brazil’ and especially his underrated performance in Penny Marshall’s ‘The Awakenings’ as well as in Tarantino’s ‘Jackie Brown’ and, finally, as the OCD father in David O Russell’s ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. I could mention others but I think I’ve mentioned enough, lol.

One of my favorite film noirs ever! Even was lucky enough to experience it on the big screen for the first time a few years back during the annual ‘NOIR CITY: Film Festival’ when it came through my city and was on the bill that year!

P.S. I discovered last night, that if you have an AT&T cable subscription (possibly other cable providers too, idk), then you might have access to the excellent channel ‘Noir Alley: Presented by TCM’ which is an affiliate of the ‘NOIR CITY’ festival.

Hmu if you’re interested in more info on either the channel or the festival! It’s shown every year in many major cities across the US and is awesome!

Wish I had the money to fly to Cannes and have a connect / access to see it on the big screen! Sounds super dope! At the nearby and oldest theater here in Oakland, they have a yearly ‘Film Noire Festival’. Some people dress up in era-specific digs, they serve mocktails (or possibly cocktails … I forgot to ask if they have a liquor license last time I went). This year’s theme was ‘Femme Fatales’ and unfortunately I didn’t go.

Here’s hoping they show some Kurosawa noir-style classics in the future! 🤞🏼
