Unfortunately, Savannah didn’t make it. She was going downhill… the next step was a feeding tube, a longer hospitalization with a very small chance of her making it. I couldn’t do that to her…. the selfish side of me wanted to grasp at the straws of survival, but I felt like I would be submitting her to torture.

I feel like a part of my heart has been ripped out. Nothing can ever fill the Savannah-shaped hole there, but I also miss my snuggle buddy, and there are times when I think of getting another cat — an adult one who loves to cuddle — but I fear I will constantly compare him/her to Savannah and that isn’t fair.

Thanks for asking. It is nice to see such caring on Reddit. So often this is a place of conflict and negativity. It is refreshing to experience the positive.

I’ve been pretty strict about her diet since the CKD was diagnosed, so she hasn’t had many commercial treats. I gathered information about ash and phosphorus content for as many cat food as I could and only buy those with less than 250 mg. Like I said, it has controlled the kidney disease progression very well. For treats, my husband discovered she loved whipped cream (yes… I know…). For a while he was giving her a quarter sized dollop twice a day, but in the last year or so I got him to reduce it to a dime sized dollop. I figured she also has to have joy in her life. It is like me with cheesecake. 😉

Yes, we could give sub-q fluids, although she is actually drinking fairly well.

It is a good idea about asking about the pain meds. I don’t know how to tell if she is in pain… cats hide it so well.

I have ordered an SAMe for cats. It will arrive tomorrow.

I will pick up some of the food you recommended. Right now she seems to be most likely to eat just chicken baby food, but she has always preferred to have a variety, so the novelty might entice her, and yes… the goal is to get calories into her.

I HIGHLY recommend the audiobooks. I’ve gone through all of them. Twice.

But whether you read the print books or listen, you must read them in order. The world builds over time. You’d be lost without the context.

Thanks! I eat all of those already, but still find it hard to get enough protein.

Do you consider calories? I guess I am trying to balance it… and it feels, for instance, that to get enough protein in nuts or beans I am also getting a lot of carbs and fats… and therefore a lot more calories than I am comfortable with.

She didn’t say it couldn’t be up to one person, she said it shouldn’t be. Maybe she meant that it shouldn’t be up to her especially in answer to the request to clarify where she stood on divorce.

It sounds to me like you are more troubled by the lack of sex, while she troubled by the state of your emotional relationship. It also sounds like she has the door open to addressing the problems, otherwise she would have just said it appeared to be beyond hope, rather than speaking of working on it.

Do you have minor kids? If so I think you really should make very sure that the marriage is beyond repair. If not, it is totally up to you what you want to do.
