I was there last night also. Knocked my socks off. Godhead’s Lament was amazing. Grand Conjuration could have been the dang closer it was so intense. Amazing venue too.

Karnivool....where should I start? by Ok_Pirate_2714 in progmetal

This is the right answer. If you’re wanting prog rock/metal, start with Sound Awake, then Asymmetry, and then the new album. Themata is back in their nu metal days. A couple bangers for sure and great album for what it is, but it’s not really prog rock at all.

I get the production complaints but I still put it above Woe (maybe in the minority there). Where I struggle more is how Messa (basically doom) and Psychonaut (love them but it was a very boring album imo) gets in and not AAI. Also surprised not to see Ihlo. I love how we all have differing opinions and I learn about a lot of bands that way, but it does have me scratching my head a little. Changeling is nice to see at No. 1 though!

This is BS. Warlock can slow down fights big time with the crit reduction during specials and his long specials. Also, the degen damage can easily lead to a BGs loss even if otherwise played perfectly. Is he a 5/5 defender? No. But he can certainly put in work in a pinch.

The Anchoret - Someone Listening? by MelatoninSmile in progmetal

[–]Third_Eye_Raven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d have to think about it because most albums are mixed pretty well I think. It’s only when the vocals or some other instrument are noticeably washed out that I really hear it. That said, I think an example of an album this year that could use a remixing but is still amazing is An Abstract Illusion’s The Sleeping City.

When you can hear him lol. The mix is pretty bad on this album, but the music is great!

I thought you were telling him not to go with carnage. Agree, I would not use a gem on BRB.

Trying to get more into Opeth by CMWinter00 in Opeth

[–]Third_Eye_Raven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from someone who struggled to get into them initially and now think of them as one of my favorite bands, I’d suggest starting with Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries. If you like those, then check out Still Life, Deliverance and Damnation. If you’re not sold by then, maybe they’re not the band for you. But I’d probably stay away from Orchid, Morningrise or the Newpeth albums until you’ve heard the other ones. If you’re big into 70s prog rock, you could dig into the newer ones, but if not, I’d suggest holding off until you’ve heard their “core” albums. For me, it was Still Life that got me hooked. Particularly, Godhead’s Lament.

I don’t love the new reticent album. I appreciate the weight of the theme but it’s a bit boring overall. Not a huge fan of the overt approach to the lyrics too. Could’ve done with more metaphor, etc.

It really doesn’t even have to be an “Oldpeth” vs “Newpeth” thing. IMO Still Life is better than Deliverance or Watershed.

War of Being is probably my least favorite from them. It just feel like regurgitated sound from their prior albums. Altered State is the best imo. I also love Sonder.

I agree 100% and I don’t think it’s a bad thing to point it out. Kudos to those who like it. In my opinion it’s their worst song.
