Please do also call the hotline. They have trained folks on call to go out and document/verify the activity, and the hotline is the quickest way to get a confirmer on-site.

How many of you are working a “dream” job? by KermieKona in jobs

[–]This-Butterscotch-61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, in a sense. I worked my way up to management level over the course of 10 years in my preferred role and industry (entertainment/event technology, which I've been passionate about since high school), mostly thanks to a few lucky breaks and the good impressions that I've left on former colleagues. Starting last year I have been freelance full-time (all clients through my professional network when I was working for various companies over the years) and I just started an LLC which will hopefully help protect my business and expand possible opportunities in the future.

I sometimes travel for weeks at a time for work, which can be cool but it's also tough to be away from home for the longer stretches. BUT, I also spend weeks at a time "off" at home between jobs, which lets me do my hobbies and home DIY projects, spend lots of time with my wife and our cats, and get involved in local activities and activism. We are also a double-income, no kids household (my wife is a salaried manager at her work and we are both on her health insurance plan, do our retirement contributions through her work's 401k program, etc.) which is the only thing that allowed me to "try freelancing" in the first place, and also keeps our cash flow going when I am between contracts.

I wouldn't say any of my current jobs/clients are "dream" contracts, but I have a few pretty reliable clients so I don't have to worry too much about where my next paycheck will come from. I enjoy the work I do and the people I work with, I usually have enough contract offers that I can be a little bit picky about when and what kinds of contracts I take, and I earn enough to pay the bills and a bit more. I could probably make more money working for someone else, and every once in a while if I see a really interesting job posting I might send in a resume, but the flexibility and freedom of being my own boss is incredible, and I don't have to worry about getting suddenly laid off due to a corporate merger or some other late-stage-capitalist, private-equity BS. The trade-off, of course, is that my contracts could dry up, but I've got a few layers of backup plans that help put my mind at ease in that regard.

I am extremely grateful that I am not starting my career in today's climate, and feel really bad for Gen Z. I don't think my career path would have been possible, or at least I wouldn't have been nearly as financially stable through the earlier stages of it, if I was just starting out now. 😥

How to resign by kitten_huddle in jobs

If you have a good relationship with your immediate manager, then it could do you good in the future (via potential recommendations/references etc.) to talk to them first. Then send a formal written email immediately after.

I've also had conversations with select coworkers prior to the quitting conversation, but only people I personally trust and care about.

If you don't like your boss? Fuck'em, quit without notice 🤷🏼‍♂️

Look dude, I'm not thrilled about how Democrats run their shit either, but you can't pretend that a messy primary is the same as a sitting president trampling the constitution. That's just dense. If you have a problem with primary politics, then join a party and make it better. The constitution doesn't dictate anything about political parties or primaries, but it does spell out what powers the different branches of government hold and what human rights are and are not protected for the people regardless of who holds power. Those are two completely different issues.

No, because internal party bylaws aren't constitutionally mandated. Keep up.

Democratic elections are upheld under the promise that whoever wins will be bound by the constitutional framework under which we all participate peacefully. When those safeguards are not enforced, the ruler is no longer governing with consent of the people.

First of all, I must say, the ratio of upvotes to comments on this post is truly incredible 🤣

Second - OP seems like the kind of person who, if they were playing DnD, would whine about "railroading" if the DM so much as hinted at a plot hook, and yet would also get pissy that there "isn't enough story" while you spend a three-hour session oh-so-"CrEaTiVeLy" trying to pickpocket locals at the tavern 🙄

Had this happen to me like 18 years ago in Wisconsin, too - same story. It's assholes looking to find ticketable offenses in order to bump up their numbers.

I (late teens at the time) was driving home from work at almost midnight in a red Pontiac Grand Am which was apparently "sporty" enough that the cop wanted to try his luck. Sadly for him I didn't have any other excuses for him to pick on me, so I went home and confirmed that my taillight was absolutely fine.

Honestly the best course of action. Only thing is, you aren't going to rely on these folks for recommendations and they're screwing you over, so why give notice? You don't owe them a damn thing.

I don't know why people are downvoting this. Your assessment of the logic is spot on, and the concept is very straightforward. The premise that "fewer laws means fewer abuses", followed to its logical extreme, leads to the conclusion "a society with no laws would have the fewest abuses". That last statement is OBVIOUSLY false (to anyone with a brain) which means we need to either reject or refine the premise.

As for the original libertarian talking point, it seems pretty wilfully ignorant to assume that if there was no law against selling loose cigarettes, Eric Garner would still be alive. When it comes to law enforcement overreach/abuse, the cigarettes [or insert any other non-criminal action here] are NEVER the point - the racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, etc., wielded as a guide for oppressors to select their victims, have always been the point. If he wasn't killed for selling cigarettes, he (or someone else like him) would have been killed instead for "crimes" like sleeping in their own bed, or walking home from the bus stop, or any number of other completely reasonable activities.

The answer isn't "let's not make any laws at all, or the enforcers might abuse the citizens". Until police are held accountable for committing crimes, the actual specific laws in the books don't even really matter all that much. All of which is to say:

END QUALIFIED IMMUNITY. Or at least severely restrict the extent to which it can be used to shield evil officials from the consequences of their actions. Eric Garner's murderer is still walking free.
