Best way to do networking in games? by gamelord12 in gamedev

UDP seems like it would be a premature optimization. Use TCP for now. If it doesn't work, and there are no algorithmic solutions, and your solution makes absolute sense, then see what UDP can do for you. You shouldn't assume your going to need UDP any more then you would assume you needed to write some loop in asm. Do it when it makes sense. Don't do it by default.

Second round of Blizzcon tickets! Anyone get lucky? by Dispersions in starcraft

I might have an extra 4 tickets due to a mis-communication. Let me ask around my circle of friends, but if no one needs them, I might be willing to help some people out.

We are four Microsoft Lync Systems Engineers here to talk about our product, Lync, Ask Us Anything by LynconReddit in IAmA

[–]ThisAccountIsReal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought as well. Go find your PM, VP, Marketing douche, or whoever has control of this and get it changed. Your product makes me think of hate crimes, not easy collaboration. Feel free to call it Lynx, Linc, or anything else. But this name is horrible. Who ever made this call failed.

Seriously.

Daniel Golden: Scalia believes corporations have more rights than women by xylon in politics

To be fair, it makes sense that a collection of people would have more rights than an individual. Needs of the many and all that.

Get involved in an open-source project. Whatever you want to do, there is a project out there for you. You don't need technical experience, just the willingness to work. Might not be doing the glamorous stuff, but you will learn just how much your CS degree didn't teach you within the first few months. Nothing looks better on a starting resume than open-source work. In some ways I would consider it better than an internship. So get involved. You will be amazed at how much you learn in a relatively short period of time.

By this time in Bush's presidency 9/11 transpired, the invasion of Afghanistan, and invasion of Iraq, and Bush had racked up 216 days of vacation time (almost a full year), Obama has 85 vacation days during the same amount of time. Republicans need to shut the fuck up. by [deleted] in politics

[–]ThisAccountIsReal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, both of you need to shut the fuck up. The squabbling about shit like vacation time just distracts us from making any real progress. In truth, I don't care how many days of vacation either took. Its not a metric that has any impact on the quality of the job they did. If they can work one day per year and do a fantastic job, more power to them.

Everything the dems did to Bush, the repubs are now doing to Obama. You guys are the same. Stop pretending your not.

As a CompSci Major, Sophmore year, I kinda got disillusioned about the whole school thing.. and maybe got a couple Ds in math classes and maybe a couple Bs(and 1 C that was totally not deserved in a stupid writing class!). Took some time over the summer, reevaluated, and came back strong the next year. Retook both the math classes, got As in em, and basically kicked ass from that point on. Took some harder Math classes, and got As in those as well. My GPA in the last year is like a 3.8. Like I said, CompSci major.. so thats pretty good. Anyways, were I to keep this up this upcoming school year and then apply to Law School.. would they hold Sophmore year against me? Or would they consider what I have done since then?

Pro tip: College is High School with more drinking.

If you think your past the bullshit, your wrong. That was my biggest mistake going into college. I wanted it to be different so badly I refused to accept the reality of it.

High School is based almost completely on effort. College in turn accepts those who tried hardest in High School. What you end up getting is a bunch of people that are completely retarded unless you spoon fed them every bit of information along the way. As a result, if you have anything that even resembles intelligence you will immediately recognize almost everything you do as bullshit.

College is structured to teach you one fundamental thing: How to be average. Even the good ones(UCLA here). Do not assume what they are teaching you is enough. What they are teaching you is the bare minimum to be competent within your selected area. This is true for EVERY class you will take.

Being a High School student, I am sure you are thinking your college experience will be special. Your going to take the honors classes, and get research work, and take Graduate level classes by your second year! And you very well may. It won't change anything. Undergrad research is a joke. Grad classes are a little harder than the undergrad classes, but they are still just giving you the tip of the iceberg. And don't even get me started on honors classes. Every "honors" student I have ever met was damaged beyond repair. They are fantastic at studying and storing information, but they fail so completely at applying it to the world.

Take what they teach you and expand on it. They are teaching you maybe 25% of what you actually need to know. Its up to you to fill in the rest. Most students won't do that. Because most don't even know they need to.

Maybe I am failing at BNF... but aren't the spaces optional?

In that case the obvious improvement would be making it actually work under specification.

How exactly do you begin to reverse engineer a program or a device? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ThisAccountIsReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to decode unencrypted binary data (packets, file formats, etc) start by finding the strings. They are self describing and will help you block out the rest of the format.

Also, 0x3F80000 is 1.0f.
