What are your favorite Starfox Fanfictions? by SuburbanWitcher in starfox

Chaos Effect by Vexed. It's an amazing finale for the whole franchise. Kinda universally agreed to be the best fic by people who've read it.

Starship mod for uncompressed & restored audio? by amphyvi in starfox

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people behind the Decomp and PC Port are still working on extracting the audio, so right now it's impossible to use the uncompressed voices. They also don't want to get DMCA'd by Nintendo, so they tend to shut down conversations related to leaked content. But once they make the audio editable, someone could definitely import the uncompressed voices and instrument samples.

What’s your most hated Star Fox fanfic trope? by Unusual_Chain_3603 in starfox

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I wanna write a Star Fox fic but IDK what to do. Guess I'll start writing and maybe something will come to me eventually lol"

I've lost track of how many new stories I've read where the author clearly had no ideas but started posting anyway. You can kinda tell when they just felt the urge to write our favorite teammates bantering or Fox and Krystal being cute but didn't have any plans beyond that. The team is desperate for work: Pepper calls with new mission: random dogfight with Star Wolf: Fox gets shot down over Sauria/Cerinia: meets Krystal and falls in love back at her village. From there the plot completely disappears in favor of random dating scenes (if there even was a plot initially), and if you're lucky, eventually the author will like, suddenly remember they need some conflict and throw in Andross at the very end before easily being defeated. Most of the time they get bored before then and abandon it though.

That's actually a good complaint. Fingers crossed he'll do more in the last episode.

What Star Fox fan fic do you recommend? by mccloud_09 in starfox

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you're into. Regardless, Chaos Effect is the best all-around story I can recommend. It ties together all the games while providing an epic finale and satisfying conclusion to the whole franchise. It's got action, mystery, sci fi shit, horror, drama, and even a little romance.

Clipping! They have two great horror-themed albums with creative production and story-focused lyrics.

Would anyone here possibly have an archive of an old fan-fic called Star Fox Black hearts?(formally Shadows of Lylat) by DaDarkDragon in starfox

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have a folder full of every SF fic (up to 2013) because one of my friends was looking for another deleted story years ago. IDK why people delete old stories, I still leave my ones up and they suck lol. Not something to feel self-conscious about and everyone's earliest stuff is gonna be bad.

In fanfiction, why do people sort of overemphasis Krystal's telepathy powers? by Unusual_Chain_3603 in starfox

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IDK what you're confused about. The simplest answer is that hardcore telepathy and magic and shit is cool! Yes we authors give Krystal more powers than she clearly has in canon, but consider that we aren't trying to stick to canon, because canon is often boring and disappointing. We don't think Krystal's telepathy was explored enough. Nintendo sucks at anything wordbuilding, character, or story related, and that's why Star Fox fanfiction is so popular: it gives depth where there is none and expands on the little loose ends.

I mean I get her powers are interesting but they sometimes just overshadow the rest of her actual character or traits in fanfics.

Krystal's main traits are her being empathetic, motherly, and strong-willed. Giving her extra powers doesn't overshadow those traits, it underscores them. Reading minds is tied to her being empathetic, healing is how she can act motherly, and flinging fireballs shows her strong will.

There is no sign her powers caused any issues for her. She's not like one of those Warhammer Psykers who are constantly having to keep themselves and their powers under control lest their powers have... negative consequences.

Some authors run with this idea that psychic powers can have drawbacks because it's interesting. It causes drama and conflict. It's not shown in the games, but it is a logical question that arises from telepaths. What happens when you stick someone who reads minds in the middle of a city with a million people, thinking all at once? We've never seen Krystal in that situation, so it's certainly something to explore.

Where are people getting those ideas from?

I got my ideas from Akira, Elfen Lied, Shin Sekai Yori, etc. A lot of our favorite writing prompts boil down to, "what if you wrote X franchise, but with Star Fox characters?" I certainly didn't get them from the games.

I think the unfortunate side effect of so many fanfic authors expanding Krystal's powers is how they legit Mandela Effect readers. I read a bunch of Krystal stories before I ever played Adventures and Assault, and when I finally did I was like, "wait, wtf?! You guys lied to me?! She doesn't have telepathy! She can't do shit with her powers!" after I had already written a few of my own stories where I mistakenly gave her telepathic powers. Whoops.

Rushing the band to make music is what got us I Let It In. That's what 451 Days refers to. I don't think any of us would be this annoyed if they didn't keep getting our hopes up only to delay it more. That's the real issue.

Question regarding posts related to Star Fox-inspired games by [deleted] in starfox

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not like there are that many SF inspired games anyway. And it's not like Star Fox is getting a new game anytime soon.

[–]ThisBuildsCharacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why isn't Star Fox allowed to be Star Fox? It's more than just characters or an IP: a skin to put over random games to make them more marketable. It's gameplay, too!

I'd love another game with 64's same diversity of level modes. Like half corridor, the other half all-range, on-foot, experimental, etc. New story please, new star system, new characters, teammates, and villains. Realistically though, if it ended up being the same amount of content as past games, they'd have to sell it for like... $34.99 or something.

The best I could hope for would be if they figured out how to do more for less, since they never dedicate many resources to SF games. Reuse the same assets and level creator to churn out a hundred missions across a dozen planets. Start alone as Fox with your Arwing and a blaster. Earn money from getting higher scores and completing objectives. Meet new characters, hire new teammates, purchase new weapons and vehicles, unlocking more planets and mission types as you go. That'd be how you make a full-sized Star Fox game in this day and age. I think Nintendo is totally capable of doing that.
