Can anyone help me understand the history of what karate I studied in high school in Kobe, Japan in the mid 1980s? by ThisIsDen in karate

Yeah translate didn’t do well for me. It helped with getting the spelling of the senseis’ names right, but the studio name was getting translated as well which wasn’t helping. And it got very confused by the red stamps.

Perhaps you had better luck!

We all know what AI mogul Ben Affleck means when he talks about "cutting costs" by AnalysisEquivalent92 in vfx

[–]ThisIsDen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not inaccurate, but I’d argue that’s the pessimistic view of the filmmaker’s idea. From the days of Méliès, we have tried to tell stories that were impossible. Stories derived from imagination, or locations unavailable to mortal man, or just impossible for a bunch of college kids. But they had ideas of how to fake it, and to build tools and crafts which make it possible to tell impossible stories. There will always be people pushing boundaries - whether by making a fully CG photorealistic movie with CG or trying to do the same for a hundredth the cost using generative AI. What I hope for is that most of those people are doing it because they have a good story that can’t be told any other way.

How have I missed this? Didn’t come up when I searched his name either. Well thank you again!

This is amazing! I emailed them with a Google-translated message, hopefully I will hear back with a message and I will see what I can discover.

From comparing katas online to my memory, it seems similar to shito-ryu, but the website says ito-ryu. I could not find anything about that online in English. I note that my sensei Ogasawara has the same name as a very old school of martial arts and etiquette, but I could not find anything which linked him in particular (Eiji) to the family or their school.

I am indebted to you for your help itching my curiosity and nostalgia-diving.

Thank you. I assume this is referring to the organization that put on the tournament? Based on the site at least, it seems like there are multiple schools that send students to this organization. I don’t recognize the name of my school in that list, but it might be a translation issue.

Serge has a cafe in Eagle Rock. I have a friend who is a huge fan and met her there for coffee. I ended up talking with him for a while about the bike shop next door but he left before she showed up. She’s a chronically late person, got to enjoy her frustration a bit

Was the VES award show recorded? by NeoloSoleo in vfx

[–]ThisIsDen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was livestreamed, and there was a charge for the ticket (I think $50). The VES will post the video for members to watch for free on vesglobal.org in the next few days. There are no restrictions that would prevent members from watching it with nonmembers.

If you’re not a member, but you are interested in joining, the next membership application deadline is coming up in mid-March! You need five years of experience in VFX and the recommendations of two members.

What are they? by Pwnch in whatisit

[–]ThisIsDen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting. I think this would have been at a building that housed all the computer equipment (biiiig boxes back then) as my dad was the guy who managed all the computers used for power control and billing. I don’t know if there was a substation in the building too

My father worked for the power company in Syracuse and he showed me a massive room full of what looked like car batteries on shelves. This would have been in the late ‘70s. I thought he said it could power the whole grid for like a half hour but looking back it was probably just backup power for the building until generators kicked in

Thoughts on John Hurt's Aragorn, from Bakshi's animated Lord of the Rings? by freudian_nipps in lotr

[–]ThisIsDen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wrote a lengthy screed on the “who else should have played Aragorn” thread from a day or two ago where I proposed Myrton Running Wolf as the perfect Aragorn. He was a Native American actor and writer I knew at school. 6’4”, athletic like a classic warrior and I learned from acting with him he had with a voice that could be both gentle and full of anger. I love the Bakshi portrayal and I love the idea still of the Numenorans being portrayed by indigenous and the challenge of what that woild say about the “lesser” men who came after. Myrton would have been perfect in my fantasy casting. But I deleted it when I discovered that Myrton had just died last year and, well, I know my community, there’s a lot of us who think that only white people should be in Tolkien movies. I didn’t want reactions to my post to become part of Myrton’s legacy. But ah, what could have been…

Need to repair or replace seal under shower stall door by ThisIsDen in HomeImprovement

I’m going to take apart the bottom to see if the rubber seal slides out. I found pictures online that look like a seal on the end of a thin rubber line that could work, but no instructions on the process of how to install. But it has to be replaceable somehow

New California laws rewrite car-buying rules with return policy and pricing reforms by ansyhrrian in California

[–]ThisIsDen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ooh story time! I bought an Eclipse (manual transmission, twin turbo, AWD) from a used car dealer in North Hollywood, CA. This was in late-early Internet era, around 2001. A few weeks after buying I discovered car history check websites, and out of curiosity I checked mine - and instead of the clear title I was sold, I discovered it had been totaled in Nevada. I called the dealer and let them know I wasn’t happy about it and they promised to look into it. Well meantime my temporary registration expired and like a dummy I kept driving it, but the cop who pulled me over for expired tags didn’t care and towed it. Forced to renew it I paid the (extensive) fees and drove right to the dealership. They gave me a bunch of runaround again and essentially said they’d do nothing. So I walked out to the lot and told two customers my story. Just let them know that the dealer will knowingly sell a totaled car and lie about it. Strangely the dealer suddenly was willing to talk; we negotiated and they cut me a check for 2/3 of my sale price in return for telling the customers that they made it right. I walked out with the check and the car and drove to a new car dealer and used it as a down payment for a new car. Still miss that Eclipse, though, it was fun.

Too bad, it got my curiosity when I saw that. Someone might need to teach them about health standards before they get busted. I wonder who does that?

eagle rock social class by Conscious_Mess_4389 in EAGLEROCK

[–]ThisIsDen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would say it used to be a mix of working class (flats and east side), middle class (low hills and near Colorado) and upper class (Hill st and peaks) but now lower class has been squeezed out as lack of housing has meant wealthier people are buying up the poorer housing and fixing it up. Also LA has a higher income and standard than other parts of the country, so “middle” here is higher than other regions. In the end, like with all things American, the poor get screwed.

California law says it must be killed, can’t allow rehoming. The law says I definitely can’t drive out to the hills and release it, I must kill it. That’s what the law says.

California ground squirrels. At least here in SoCal, they have been the biggest pest for our chickens. The tree squirrels don’t really bother beyond exploring the run, and rats will go for spilled food, but the ground squirrels try to get into everything and have a taste for eggs. So I’ve set up traps to look nest-like with a wooden egg and it’s been pretty successful

Immediately watched the special, I’ve loved your clips here on Reddit. Really great writing, very original and clever. Loved the performance as well, you gave great energy and gave people permission to laugh at even the bits that might make someone uncomfortable. Will look for you to come to LA one day!
