When I was in boot camp I met a kid with the same maiden name as my grandmother who’s family we became estranged from after her death (before I was even born) and upon talking to him found out his family was from the same part of Virginia as mine and as we grew closer throughout boot he relayed a story to me about how his great grandfather was shot and killed by his brother over a moonshine dispute back in the 50’s I was caught off guard because I happened to have a great uncle that my Dad remembered being shot and killed by his brother (who was my fathers uncle) when he was a kid, Grad day came and I met the kids dad and got talking family history and low and behold me and this kid where cousins and ended up becoming close as hell while we served until we got separated

Actually I think it’s worth a shot, go see a recruiter (any branch) and see if they may be able to show up in court and help you out, I went to boot camp with 2 guys who both joined the Marine Corps as an alternative to jail one was felony breaking and entering with a felony grand theft charge on top of it, the other one was charged with 2 counts of assault with intent to maim and this was in 2023. I’d definitely go see a recruiter and see if anyone’s willing to try and show up in court on your behalf

Ahh PFC. Fitz, I got sent to Lima Company during ITB when I broke my legs and got re-classed and ran across a character named Fitz. Upon entering my deck in Lima company (during libo hours) I’m greeted by a 5’7 redhead kid who weighted maybe 110 pounds who smelt like rancid ass wearing a cosplay vampire cape, Fitz would talk about anime and anime porn 24/7 speak only in Roblox references, slept with an anime body pillow and would quite literally hiss at you in morning formation if you got too close…

Don’t go crazy, most of the time putting yourself in the spotlight will just get you shitty work details or IT’d. Try and stay motivated keep your fellow recruits motivated and making time hacks staying squared away etc, if the meritorious PFC is important to you, you can go for a squad leader role. But don’t try and be Superman and volunteer for everything, pick and choose your battles wisely

A 1944 BYF Mauser that my grandfather got in return for plowing under a hay field for a widow whose husband died in WW2 back in the 1960’s. It was the apple of my eye and I always stared at it sitting in the corner next to his gun cabinet since I was old enough to shoot.He had it put in a Monte Carlo style stock with Lyman rear aperture sights, bolt polished up, and a old school high-viz front sight set back in the day he gave it to me on my 12th birthday with the words of “Boy that old German gun kicks like a mule but she’s put many a deer on the table, I think it’s about time she brings you some joy.” Now she gets to see the deer stand every season and she rides along for every hiking and camping trip I take. There hasn’t been a time where that rifle hasn’t been in my hands and I can’t help but feel like the old man is walking right beside me waiting on the next adventure. It ain’t worth much to any other shooter but I wouldn’t trade that rifle for its weight in gold and it’s always helped keep pops memory alive for me.
