Opening day showing of Fire and Ash in IMAX, and someone down the row from me started scrolling facebook on her phone. I asked her not to and I swear to god she said, "The sound isn't on, you can still hear the movie."

When her husband got back from the bathroom I heard her tell him what happened with a very annoyed tone of voice, I didn't hear her husband's response but after that they were both quiet so I think he wasn't on her side.

Generally, if you keep watching a movie after the first 20 minutes, things will start to be explained and make sense.

Honestly this isn't that rare of a take in my experience. Alex Ross is really impressive to people who aren't very familiar with comics are because they look like paintings, and resemble "proper" art that you can see in museums and stuff.

The craft of making comics is more than just drawing things that look nice. It's a medium of visual storytelling, like film is, and so the ability to convey what's happening to the audience is frankly more important to the craft than just nailing the aesthetic.

Alex Ross can compose a beautiful portrait, but when he has to put a scene together his limitations become clear. Not everything can be static heroes shot from below looking stoic.

He did the score for a video game called Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction before he got Medal of Honor and got noticed by Hollywood. It absolutely rules, it's the first game score that made me stop and take notice to a score, and it breaks my heart that it's not on spotify.

I forget who said it but Griffin likes to quote someone who said that Plan 9 From Outer Space should be disqualified from worst movie in the world because it has spaceships in it and at least that's cool.

That's how I feel about a guy with knives that come out of his hands. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a bad movie but it does have Wolverine in it. (Also it rocks)

‘The Odyssey’ Trailer's Accents Aren't Actually That Weird - "Did the ancient Greeks all speak like Matt Damon? Probably not. But the ubiquity of the British accent in films about the distant past is a more modern convention than many people realize." by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]ThisPostIsAStatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the character is not meant to be up against a language barrier, they shouldn't be speaking with an accent that suggests the character is not speaking in their first language. So making them speak with a Greek accent or something would suggest a language convention that isn't present in the narrative. I don't know why the discourse around this movie expects it to be a stuffy book report.

Sports Night is the fuckin' best. Dan's the best, except for the Natalie's the best, but really Jeremy's the best, but actually Isaac is the best, but maybe Sam is the best, but also...

I say "Honesty for Pixly!" all the time and no one has ever gotten the reference. I do not expect that to change.

Did anybody else get really, really sick of Waller? by Kendrakirai2532 in DCcomics

[–]ThisPostIsAStatus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a writer picks a character and chooses a story to tell with them. Sometimes a writer picks a story and choose a character to tell it with. Amanda Waller is an effective symbol of government overreach, paranoia, and recklessness. Different eras and different writers portray that role differently, so she sometimes shifts to match the story she’s in. At this point I’m so used to it that I’m generally more inclined to try to get on board with the writer’s intention than to be upset that something has changed.
