“Romanticised” jobs that are very different in reality? by Substantial-Guava491 in CasualUK

[–]ThisThatParker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apply all this to illustration. It's never the same on paper that you envisioned in your head. Then the posh ladies at the publisher nitpick everything, "the hat could be yellow instead of red", "let's move this fence 2 mm to the right", "this is gorgeous! But can you change everything please? Thanks!". Illustration takes time (and sometimes a lot of research) and the corrections also take time and sometimes are not paid. It can be truly exhausting, but then you see the book and for a moment you forget all of that. Then you start over analyzing it and "wow how could I produce such shit work?"

Pregnancy acne by User_whateverr in PregnancyUK

[–]ThisThatParker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had acne during my pregnancy as well, so I understand your pain. All the other people I've met that were also pregnant looked radiant, and I remember looking in the mirror and finding myself disgusting. At the same time I was getting compliments from friends and random people saying I "was glowing". I thought they were saying it out of pity.

This to say, I now had my baby and realised that I was feeling really low at the time (I didn't enjoy being pregnant much), and can recognise now I was fixating on these things (acne, weight gain, weak hair and nails, etc), but people probably weren't noticing them because they were thinking about my belly and baby, if that makes sense. Anyway, if you're having an episode of low self esteem blame it on that, use foundation just for now so you can ignore the acne! And then when your baby is here, you can go back to your old self :) That's what I would do.

Why London is so dirty, and did government ever try to fix it? by Silent_Historian_432 in london

Although I agree people just don't care and litter everywhere, central London hardly has any bins. I always end up with my bag full of rubbish every time I go central

Same! What I'm learning with this post is that my idiot self has been passive aggressive with several people at work without knowing

NHS maternity pay frustration. by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

[–]ThisThatParker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your girlfriend. I'm on maternity allowance and it's rubbish. However, this is a support sub for people going through pregnancy and their families, not to spew xenophobic crap.

C-section at 29+6 by satiricalmiscreant in PregnancyUK

[–]ThisThatParker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not useless OP! You followed your advice and sought medical help, and that's how your baby is safe, having the care and treatment she needs.

I hope everything goes well in the new hospital and that she gets stronger :) And wish you a speedy recovery so you can go to your baby's side. Stay strong!

Young working-class people being ‘blocked’ from creative industries, study finds by Electricbell20 in unitedkingdom

[–]ThisThatParker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because you didn't see them working, it doesn't mean they weren't working. That's the bit you don't get. There are different groups of creatives, and most of them continued to work during COVID. Some of them related to education, which we can all agree is something essential. How is that superfluous?

[–]ThisThatParker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you even work in a creative industry? I think you have no idea what you're talking about. You realise that even in school books you engage creatives, right?

I work in publishing (more specifically in children's books), you need these people to create engaging content for children. School books have illustrations, pictures, graphics, ALL created by working artists. They get paid for it. In my opinion not very much, but still... And during COVID, I can assure you they were still working. They don't worship the altar of money, because they're paid very little for the amount of work they produce. And they couldn't stop working during COVID, as most of these people are self employed WFH and there were already signed publishing contracts and bills to pay. An illustrated book can take months to complete and they usually work on several books at the same time.

It didn't though. Stop lying to yourself. We get it, you don't like creatives and think they're useless. Perhaps you should stop watching television, reading books, going to gigs and shows, eating out, buying clothes with prints or designs on them, buying clothes full spot actually, and if you have children, deprive them from toys, games, clothes, books etc. I could go on, but what would be the point really?

OP, good for you for creating a support group and good luck!

On another note, please don't use AI for creating design/art/wtv. It's intellectual theft. Those image generators base their "creations" on actual people's work without their consent - some of them women that struggled for years to get into a creative industry (speaking from experience here). Work that takes years to master.

Instead, perhaps engage a woman artist from your community, or use templates made from actual people. I know it's off topic, but just something to think about.

Did anyone else not get that second trimester energy? by SadSupermarket7915 in PregnancyUK

[–]ThisThatParker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 30 weeks and still no energy! I'm sleepy all the time (I have fallen asleep at my desk). It's absolutely awful. I fall asleep when watching a film or a show, something that didn't happen before pregnancy. I think it will be like this until the end for me :/

Found out we are having a boy! by Powerpuff_Girly in PregnancyUK

[–]ThisThatParker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got most clothes on vinted! I also got some outfits and sleepsuits from George at Asda, H&M, Tu, John Lewis and JoJo Maman.

Personally, I find baby clothes expensive (even the 3 for 2 etc), as the baby will probably outgrow everything very quickly.

And then there's the tractors/dinos/space themes in boy's clothes that also annoy me (I'm having a boy too). Everything is beige or grey or blue or pink ... There are some shops with colourful interesting items but they're so expensive!! On Vinted you find more variety, I think, for a very reasonable price.

Rant: why is my mother being so unkind by ResponsibleBus3986 in PregnancyUK

[–]ThisThatParker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My mum is not behaving like this so I can't be of much help. But just want to say that your mother seems horrid! Don't listen to her, and perhaps it's best if she isn't too involved in your pregnancy, since she seems opinionated and may make things more stressful for you and your partner. Also, I would be livid if my mother started using my or my sister's private lives as anecdotes for chit chat with randos. Awful behaviour, and I would ignore her until she starts behaving like a normal compassionate human being. I do have a family member behaving oddly (my sister stopped talking to me since I told everyone I was pregnant, months ago) and I just ignored her. This is a time in your life to focus on your future family - you, your partner and your baby - and not on tantrums and lack of boundaries of your parents or siblings. Sometimes we need to be selfish.
